How to use the relative clip playback option. Which can be used for backup clips for timecoded playback.

The relative playback option for clips is an often misunderstood setting and at first, may seem useless.
In this video, I will go over some interesting use cases. In particular the ability to use it as a hot-swap feature between timecode and local playback times.

Thank you so much I always had problems where the time code gets to 9 seconds and stop this is verry Helpful

I had similar issues where time-code would cause stuttering as clips tried to constantly sync. A 9sec stop is very odd.

Is this assuming you are moving to the backup clip as soon as the SMPTE clip is sync'd? Is there really a real world example where the timecode 'glitches' and you jump to the backup clip without losing sync with the audio? I"m not sure how this would actually be practical... Either you're pre-emptively jumping to a non-locked clip, in which case drift is a possible eventuality, or you're staying on the SMPTE locked clip until you get a timecode glitch, in which case it's too late to switch, no?

Hi Mike, Yes I switch to the back up clip a few seconds after Timecode has started. I have used this when working with un-reliable timecode sources, I have seen issues with stuttering - however in those scenarios i wasn't responsible for the TC source and am unsure of the cause. I also needed a fail safe for situations where TC was constantly running or looping and to ensure clips are not re-triggered if the operator is not paying attention. Drift will definitely be a problem, I have generally used this for short clips like intros. For longer clips like a whole track I will switch back and forth at times to re-sync (this is a work around and will cause a jump in frames if it has drifted)

@@mith Thanks for the thoughts! I'm hoping timecode will be stable enough to rely on leaving it running for the majority of the songs. I will definitely have this free-wheel second clip setup though. Cheers!

@@MikeStJean for sure, running 100% on timecode is the best option especially with drift etc as you mentioned. I've been caught out a couple of times, so having a quick alternative is a huge peace of mind :) I love the music on your channel, I can't wait to see what you are working on with Resolume :)

@@mith Thanks so much for the thoughts on my music :) Lots more coming! I've found a new passion (and time!) for it since the live event / touring music industry has indefinitely shut down. I had the thought that if it wasn't too taxing on the system / it could handle the layers, it would be an idea to have one layer always running TC, and a second that starts in TC and then switches to FW, so that you could stay on the timecode layer the whole time and If it were to glitch out, you would have the FW layer already running in the background. Of course this would be quite a bit more taxing, but another idea anyway. Cheers!
