Schrödinger's cat is not a quantum system itself but a normal cat that is affected by a quantum system. The original thought experiment places a toxin in the box that is released by the radioactive decay of a particle which is governed by the laws of quantum mechanics. In this setting you cannot know if the particle has decayed enough to release the toxin until you measure the particle (opening the box). This entangles the cat with the particle.

Yes. This whole video was in fact a bad description about Schrodinger's cat. There is a point where he basically says that the cat being alive and dead is a consequence of our lack of knowledge since we didn't open the box to make the measurement and that is nonsensical. In fact, Schrodinger's cat was elaborated by Erwin to elucidate what was, according to his thoughts, an incomplete description of reality provided by the quantum theory.

Also, as to the "why a dead/alive cat" question, as opposed to say a coin toss, Schrödinger at the time didn't believe that this was possible, so he came up with the most absurd analogy he could to show how ridiculous the idea of quantum superposition is.

Quantum entanglement is one of my favourite parts of Quantum Theory, mainly because of it's application in science fiction. Using quantum entanglement for faster-than-light communication with no discernable limit to range in distance is a really fascinating and practical application of the concept. Among other media, this has been featured in the video game series Mass Effect, which I absolutely adore. So much so that I have the trilogy on two consoles (PS3 and PS4).

I learned to do computations on a slide rule - no calculators yet. It was slow and tedious but in the end, I understood the process that led me to the answer in a way I never would have done pushing buttons on a calculator..

5:10 This is the best & simplest explanation I've ever heard for this. I swear I've never heard anyone say the light photon knocks the smaller particle into a new position. The problem is that the way most scientists describe, it sounds like a new age concept to a layman.

Because it is a new age concept. The way he explained it is understandable for most but the explanation is not perfectly correct. (Maybe because he didn't want to make it complicated). It's not like you can't know where a particle is as light hits it and it goes away. The truth is a particle doesn't has a fixed position in the first place(When not measured). Only when the particle interacts with another particle/force or anything the particle's uncertainty in position collapses but it's practically never 0. And I am not saying that we can't measure its position before its interaction with light I am saying the particle doesn't even have a fixed position in space so how can 'we' measure it.

Of course, I love Neil deGrass Tyson, but I also love Chuck Nice. At the end of the explainer videos, Chuck Nice should also get credit, as in: "This has been another explainer, with Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice." He may not be a scientist, but his interactions with Dr. Tyson do much to make the points of the videos understandable and easier to remember.

Heck yeah, glad to have you aboard!! I've been a fan of StarTalk for many a year, at this point, and I've always liked Chuck. But as the years go on, I've grown to love him more and more. He never fails to bring a smile to my face. But, more importantly, his intelligence really shines through once you watch multiple episodes. The sheer level of knowledge retention that he displays is so impressive to me. Neil will begin explaining some intricate topic, and Chuck will bust out some terms or other points that he learned during an episode years prior. It really is impressive to me (I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast once dinner time rolls around...lol), and that, among many other things, makes me like him more and more.

Except for the bit on Quantum computing and possibilities of existence of states between the two, it could have been more substantive. The context of how Schrodinger came to deliver the example in the letter he wrote is key. Final segues into quantum entanglement was really welcome.

My Pop had his own version of 'Schrodinger's Cat'. He would buy lottery tickets with random numbers. He put them in a jar and not look at them for a week. When I asked him why. He said "Until I look at the numbers, I have winning ticket." I guess my old man was unknowingly aware of the quantum state of being. Never helped him win the lottery though.

Chuck's Se7en analogy actually makes even more sense because that box could have been literally anything until it was observed. And we could also observe the interior of the box by shining x-rays on the box and collapse the probability that way. We have discovered so many ways to observe Schrodinger's cat without opening the box.

Many years ago I read an article penned by one of Schrodinger's peers, (I forget his name) that basically said that the cat problem was first created as a joke by Schrodinger to mess with his grad students. Kind of like the Sound of One Hand Clapping, or a Tree Falling in a Forest makes no Sound. Then it just took on a life of it's own and became what ii is today.

The tree falling in the forest is actually 2 separate issues: 1. Do the laws of physics operate equally throughout the universe even without an observer? & 2. Is sound the physical vibration, or is it the perception of it? #2 is a matter of definition, not a question about reality.
