Snuff hit Britain at the beginning of the eighteenth century, and never really left. Since smoking was banned in the Houses of Parliament, snuff hit record sales with the English MPs circle, and this dandy habit lives on today.
On this episode of “How Do They Do It”, we venture through the quirky process of making snuff. And finally see how it reaches the entrance of the House of Commons chamber where the MPs are welcome to take a pinch of.

I could remember several years ago, I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Was actually addicted to snuff and cigarettes. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Snuff and cigarettes addiction really destroyed my life. Not until my mom recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 6 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

Congrats! I'm really happy for you that your mom decided to help you. I always admire those who beat their addiction. Knowing it's possible to fix your life knowing there's people out there that have done what I thought was impossible gives me hope I will make it through as well. Those who share their experiences don't know how much it helps when you're about to give up, it gives you the strength knowing somone who actully know what it's like to go through this tell you it's possible, it's not the same somone telling you you can do it when they have no idea what it's like, but hearing somone who knows what it's like that helps a lot since you understand it firsthand and made it out gives so much hope. so thanks for sharing.

It's a tobacco product. It's unhealthy regardless. But it's lime, not lye. And lots of other food items and medicines are produced using way more dangerous chemicals than salt or ammonia. You can't really compare what a chemical does on it's own vs. when it's mixed with other chemicals. It just doesn't work that way. Both of the elements in regular table salt are deadly on their own. But combined they make things taste better and are vital for our body to function properly. So yea it's unhealthy to use snuff, but not because of the dust on the floor or the chemicals used to produce it.
@theRPGmaster

Ammonia evaporates, so there's probably not much in the finished product. Lime is caustic, but not poisonous, harmless when diluted.

I wish pipe tobacco was affordable, vice tax makes it $120 for 20g here, and snuff is equally stupid. 6 quid of snuff in the UK is about $150 here - if it existed here, it's a criminal offence to buy or sell smokeless tobacco products even though they're significantly safer than smoking tobacco. So I've been making my own, quit smoking overnight. Instant cure for a quarter century of smoking. Mostly because the governments idea is to tax the heck out of us through it. As if somehow increasing the price cures addiction, clearly they haven't looked at crack or heroin addicts in that light, they give them free drugs here. But us smokers? Oh boy, we're a gravy train. Smoking in Australia is like buying a brand new Lamborghini every seven years then burning it and buying another. Yet they refuse us medical service if they SUSPECT it may be smoking related even though we pay ten times more tax than regular citizens and 100% of the tax goes to the healthcare system. This is why I've bought seeds online and now am growing crops of the stuff to make my own. Downside is it's illegal to grow it, even though tobacco is legal. Upside is if the cops come I'll say it's marijuana which is legal to grow (for personal use) even though marijuana is illegal. Got to love that batshit insane logic. tl;dr If you're Australian and like fine tobacco products - move or grow your own in a clandestine growing booth in your room like you're a dirty junkie hiding their habit.

I picked up this box someone thought was supposed to be used for credit cards or something. Well, I didn't need a credit card to buy it, for I picked it up for $5 bucks. It was a sterling silver box used for snuff . It had all the British sterling hallmarks . Not to bad of a find. Also picked up a cigarette hammered sterling silver case that day . I paid $15 for that . It's not so easy these days finding those pieces at those prices anymore.

It's already known as "the queen's powder" because queen Charlotte was a big fan of it (she got nicknamed "snuffy Charlotte" by the rest of the royal family) but anyway it's not just used in britain, Pope Benedict XII, Louis XII, Napoleon and Caterina de Medici were all known snuffers, all over europe it was very popular among the upper class, you could tell someone's wealth by looking at how they consumed tobacco, poor people smoked it and rich people snorted it

It's amazing that such ancient machinery is still in use today. Of course he could get the same result by using a simple kitchen blender, but that wouldn't be nearly as dramatic and wouldn't justify the retail cost. He also skipped the step where they add their 'secret and special' ingredient...adrenochrome, which gives the elite the real boost when snorted. Of course snuff for the commoners, does not contain the secret ingredient that makes it so special for MP's and the elite.

I knew someone who died of cancer of the sinuses. It's hard to think of a worse way to go. The pain was excruciating. A surgeon tried to remove the cancer, and had to remove bones from my friend's face. Unfortunately, it didn't work, and he had to live his dying days with a face that terrified most everyone who met him. Put that story to some jaunty music.
