Perhaps flexible displays are the one piece of technology that companies want to perfect before throwing them out into the wild? Think about it, they're taking a big bet with flexible displays.

I think it is more about patents and usability. The big companies are having battles over flexible display tech. The other side is the usability. Although it is very cool such a flexible screen, what is it actually going to be used for vs durability? Curved screens already flooded the market and for the home usage there is no need for more curves. Phone screens tried curves as well, but did really catch on, plus why would it? Phones and tabs (etc) need regidity to function good and to offer durability. Flexible motherboards, chips etc are not there yet ;) So what is the usage of a flexible screen then? Other then the "ooh cool" factor and perhaps commercial display setups? To me personally the flexible display market will mostly be for production advantages once the tech has been refined and production processes optimized. As i said before, current display tech already allows for curving.

We're still waiting but manufacturers are trying to still create glass displays. As a result what's been released is mostly a gimmick - foldable phones and laptops etc but it has a big crease down the middle and has a limited life cycle because they keep trying to make it with a glass display. Until they ditch the glass we'll still have heavy, solid devices.

These are a great idea with so many potential uses. I feel that as a phone screen though one simple issue people may have is that when pressing buttons on the screen for example, they like it to be a hard surface that they press against. Ok, so you can use a table i guess but what if that's not available.

They could be used in the construction industry for large blueprints. One advantage for large blueprints is that you can have many people stand around and view and point at things on the blueprint so you can communicate your ideas easily. Small screens mean that only a few people standing next to each other can show ideas at one time. Also large screens mean you have a giant bulky rigid screen to carry around. So having a large roll-able screen is the best of all worlds combined into one product. It also allows for corrections or changes to be made on the spot that are instantly relayed to everyone else without having to re print blueprints.

I am about to finish my PhD on Graphene based flexible electronics. Flexible electronics require a transparent electrode that can bend several times without cracking. ITO (indium tin oxide) electrodes that are used pretty much in every phone and TV are fairly brittle. They can be placed on a curved rigid glass, but cannot be repeatedly bend on a flexible plastic. Transparent electrodes that can be bent repeatedly are generally fabricated with conductive polymers. They are very sensitive to heat and chemical attack. They can also degrade in time by themselves. So a process would need to address for all these issues. They are also fairly expensive and hard to synthesize. Compared to ITO which is simply a metal oxide, conductive polymers require more strict synthesis procedure. Conductive polymers are also less electrically conductive than ITO electrodes, so a device design has to take that into consideration (I guess this could cause an efficiency issue. More energy would be loss to heat). So, it is true that manufacturing volume has to increase for conductive polymer synthesis to at least drop cost of material. There is also the issue of how to deposit a very thin layer conductive polymer film evenly on a surface. Conductive polymers are not exactly my field, but through lab experience I can tell you that this process would be somewhat easy but labor intensive for small surface area (about a 5 inch phone screen). It can be a nightmare if you try to apply it to a large surface area (large screen TVs). Either way, it would require labor, and qualified labor. Just because you can do it in a lab does not mean you can do in a factory where no assembly personnel would have a master's in science, let alone a PhD. We can do a lot of things in our labs and showcase it at a fair and blow people's minds. So, the fabrication process has to be simple, fool proof, and streamlined. This process also has to produce a very small number of faulty devices. If half your fabricated devices are ending up in the garbage, your process is crap and it will reflect on consumer pricing. Figuring this out can take a lot of money and time. And it is not guaranteed that it will work. If the only way you can do it is through a sophisticated and expensive method, why bother? People are not dying to have flexible screens.

Tony Stark's display inside his helmet. But seriously, all because it CAN flex, doesn't mean it should be in a device that allows it to flex all the time. This just means it's a material and technology that can form fit to the inside or around something that best utilizes that shape for the user. It's benefit is its versatility.
@nicolausgbauman4 жыл бұрын
The flexible display should end the laptop and the tablet form factors completely. They should coalesce into three-ish items that combined weigh only a few ounces. 1) A screen you can roll up into a small protective tube 2) a computer that's about the size of a Raspberry Pi (fits well inside the palm of my hand) and has the computing capability of the laptops we have now or better 3) Something to prop up and unroll my flexible display that has a camera that can watch my fingers type and touch on the table in front of it (no more physical keyboard).

another problem that must be tackled with these is in software, having current aspect ratios like 16:9/21:9 and others. The screen may look a bit distorted the more its folded? unless when you fold it around you in games, you increase your field of view. either way it would be useful just when it comes to ease of transportation
@leafbelly5 жыл бұрын
Because a truly foldable device requires a foldable battery (processor, RAM, etc.), I think most phones we'll see in our lifetimes will just be "bendable'" phones. The only other way would be to have those components stored separately, in your pocket, and transmitted wirelessly to your screen. Even then, we'd also need "true wireless" charging also.

You could use a display-rolling mechanism in a smart-watch, so that it extends out of your watch towards your arm and eventually reaches a display-size that is similar to that of a traditional smartphone. Essentially, that would make it a wrist-mounted phone. It sounds cool and futuristic, but it's also a bit too gimmicky, that's why I never considered building a prototype. Here's the idea. If there's a smart kid out there who wants to try it, go ahead.

If a smart phone is flexible, I can imagine alot of people folding it or putting a hole through it by putting them in pockets or in handbag. For phones, I reckon it is best to have holographic displays, which will be years and years of development. Flexible displays should be used for TV or wall display.

Imagine coating the inside of a cars windshield with a transparent & flexible screen, then add a bunch of sensors of all kinds: In the night the screen will highlight animals that is detected by IR cameras, and it can map out the road in low light conditions (or you can use your headlights, but where is the fun in that? ;P ) The car can either use 3d cameras to detect your eyes and then model the interface so it lines up with what you see, or it can "assume" that your eyes will be in a general area where eyes usually are and simplify the calculations but will be less immersive.
@stephenpaulson83137 жыл бұрын
looking through all the comments, non of the uses require flexibility. thin and curved isn't the same as flexible. there's always going to be a solid component anyway due to processors and batteries.
@TackKeyNack7 жыл бұрын
Device design seems to be the greatest barrier. What would you use these displays for? You wouldn't exactly want curling your smartphone whenever you want to use it with one hand. There are only a few commercial practical implementations for this concept as of now, so it would take time for these to mature.

Yeah I thought one of the big issues was durability and lifespan? I've heard that the screens work well enough right now and don't rely on overly new technology but the problem is pixels die rapidly and the screens don't last very long as a result. Hell, half the pictures I've seen online if you look closely enough have dead pixels clearly visible and sometimes entire dead sectors somewhere on the screen. Whatever conductor they use for the screen has to be soft in order to be flexible, and soft materials still break down over time - like a rubber hose. If you sit there and bend and flex the hose long enough it'll eventually start to crack and finally break. Thin metal fibers work the same way. Anyone who's ever worked with electrical wires tells you the ultra high gauge wires - the ones with human hair thickness - are stupidly easy to break and degrade rapidly if you don't handle them super delicately. Put something that's made up of millions of those delicate wires into the hands of your average consumer and see how long it lasts. It'd be a RMA massacre if any company used flexible displays in a mainstream product right now.
