There is some gray area here. John has been portraying a persona his whole life. That's part of a narcissistic personality disorder in that people cultivate a "personality" to present to the world. In fact most people do it. It's how people lie to themselves about the world and who they really are underneath. John isn't as oblivious to his own odiousness as it seems, but his ego defenses kick in every time he might start to contemplate raw reality. Drinking to numb the pain of harsh realizations is part of that too of course.

I understand why Karl wants to keep some kind of distance from the phenomenon because we lose something of our humanity when we direct all our loathing to one person. However, John is loathsome and every time I almost feel sorry for him and don't want to see him utterly destroyed, then he soon does something even more disgusting and shameful, showing no pity to someone else. Vince The Lawyer says that all criticism directed towards others is really self-criticism and shows how it always applies to what John accuses others of doing. That "always accuse others of what you do yourself" is from rules for radicals and we see it so often in wider society because it's such a defense mechanism of pre-emptive strike to falsely accuse others of what they know they're secretly guilty of already. I think we all are secretly worried that there's just a little bit of the ugliness we see in John lurking in our own characters, which is why of course everyone feels a little bit guilty with the "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" line. Finding a balance between calling out bad actors and keeping our own house in order is getting more difficult.
