It was speculated that because of her being gay, when she stopped with the blond hair or possibly wigs on B&B, and cut her hair off and went totally gray, that she was starting to be closer to her true self. I also believed her real life sexual preference is why we rarely ever saw any real intimacy between her and Eric except a time or two of brief scenes in the very early years, though the character constantly obsessed over him being the love of her life. She was once such a beautiful feminine woman, that it was hard to ignore how she lost that image almost drastically on the soap. I noticed how she even stopped carrying purses, wearing those horrid pantsuits every episode. I’m sure it was hard to write around all that, because she became almost like a totally different character. It was great that she retired, but I think the character should have been recast instead of dying off. It would have given so many more endless possibilities to the soap. Morgan Fairchild or Judith Light would have both been great cast options for Stephanie, and I think viewers would have adjusted to that once getting used to it. It left John McCook with no female to have real drama and great scenes with, though he truly never passionately desired her…. but I still don’t think their story should have ended the way it did!!
