I used to think about the song Pets by Porno for Pyros in terms of extraterrestrials and how they might come to see us as 'Making great pets.' Hadn't so much considered that to be the case with the relationship between us and our machines. But it still stands. If we aren't willing to augment ourselves; genetically, biologically, mentally, etc. we may very well end up as sorts of pets to more capable, more functional, machines. Machines that, if we are lucky, will bring us along for the ride as they colonize galaxies, but if we're not then they may come to view us as pests; more as hurdles to get past or walls to take down than as polevaults or as tools to carry with them. Otherwise we could not make intelligent machines and we could not improve upon the rate of advancement that natural evolution would take us down and just stagnate or at best crawl slowly while we miss out on what we have potential to become or the potential that our mechanized offspring would have the ability to accomplish. I think it is wrong of us to fear either of those two futures; the transhuman one or the one where biology becomes obsolete and gives machines and 'artificial' intelligence the keys to the future. Regardless of what type of future is in store, we should always be mindful that there is a long future in store for the universe. Even if we do ourselves in before we are multiplanetary, the chemistry in this universe will continue. I'd just be comforting to imagine that life, be it machine life or biological, from Earth is the catalyzing agent that spreads from planet-to-planet, star-to-star, and galaxy-to-galaxy and if we run into some other origin of this catalyst of consciousness, transforming the universe as we have, then we will have to consider whether or not to aid it, fight it or coexist with it. Perhaps the offspring of Earth will go on to last as long as the universe itself. It should be our purpose, our goal, our reason to make that the case, and if we fall short in the face of a more worthy adversary, from here or elsewhere, so be it.
