What is the purpose of that, funny looking, spiral in the centre of the Jet engine on modern aircraft? Why am I not allowed to walk under the wings while Boarding?
These are some of the questions that I will be answering in todays video so make sure you stay glued to the video until the end!
If you have more questions about strange procedures around aircraft, don't hesitate to ask me in the comments!

One addition, as I’ve been working as ground service for some years during my study time: we used the signal pylons under each wing tip to prevent any vehicle driving to close to the wing. The wing tip distance is easy to miscalculate, when you’re sitting in the vehicle, especially if you have low installed wings, so the signal pylon helps a lot.

The spiral on the Nosecone is a German Luftwaffe invention; as in service on dirt and grass airstrips the paint on propeller blade tips wears off quickly, they did not paint the blade tips but painted the propeller spinners with a variety of color-schemes, the black and white spiral being extremely common. It was called the "Kullernase". Regards from Alaska!

The fuel vent thing is also why passengers don't board through rear doors during refueling. Fuel will spray quite a distance with the pressures used to refuel. (I used to work aircraft maintenance and have seen this more than once.)

Former aircraft mechanic myself. We had a fuel dump accident at work one night. Was doing fuel level testing, tank pressure checks and also pressure checks on the dump masts at the wingtips. When we took over the plane from dayshift they informed us they had put most of the fuel in the plane earlier in the day doing static leak checks and repairing those as needed. The plane only needed a top-off for us to do some of the checks later in the night. We got truck hooked up, pumping fuel, after a few minutes of pumping everyone is starting to get concerned, plane appeared to be taking on more fuel than we were told it would need. Everyone was on the right wing of the plane where the fuel truck was, manning fire extinguishers, checking dump mast pressure gauge, supervising the area, etc. Supervisor calls out to one co-worker to go in the plane to verify the fuel levels in all the tanks since plane had ground power hooked up already. Crew entrance was on left side of plane. We watched as he went around the nose and suddenly starts hollering and running back waving his arms to shutdown the fuel truck operation. All the fuel the truck was pumping was going out the left wingtip unbeknownst to all of us. lol That was a long night working with the fire department and EPA representatives doing a major cleanup of several hundred gallons of fuel.

Great video! Having worked on a carrier in the Navy I know all about being drenched in jet fuel. The jet fuel tanks are inside the freshwater tanks, for obvious reasons and yeah, when the carrier is 30 years old, there is leakage. We had lots of similar rules except occasionally you have no choice but to walk under the wings of a taxiing aircraft, but you never ever walked through the arc of a prop even when you were 100% sure the aircraft was parked.

What I find most interesting about this video is that in spite of technological advances, something as simple as a spiral painted on the main shaft of a jet engine turbine can indicate whether it's safe for personnel to approach the aircraft. It reminds me of the Plimsoll line (named after the man who devised it) painted on the hulls of cargo ships as a visual indicator of the ship's maximum load capacity.

Unfortunately people are really dumb, simple is needed over technology. When a plane lands it's really loud, everyone is wearing head gear. How is technology going to help anyone when everyone is focused on making sure the plane is going to the right gate, the right line, waiting for the engines to slow down so the plane can be blocked.. Simple is all we have.

Always good information. Jet exhaust can do a lot of damage, but it can have some surprising benefits. Back in the early 1980’s when I was still flying, we had gone out to the airport one winter’s day for a family flight from EVV to BNA. It had snowed the previous day and I was working with a broom, clearing the snow off of our 172. We were tied down right in front of the FBO, not more than about 20m from the taxiway. I looked up and saw a USAir DC-9 making his way to runway 04. As I watched, the first officer smiled and waved, then the captain did the most amazing thing. He did a little pirouette with the plane, turning 360 degrees right beside me. Before I realized what he was doing, the jet exhaust had neatly blown all the snow off my Cessna. As he finished the circle, the first officer grinned and waved again. I know he couldn’t hear me, but I waved back and shouted, “Thanks, big brother!”

Does the -MAX share a type rating with the 787 and the upcoming 777 refit because they have the same flight deck configuration?
@whiplash7400
@whiplash7400 5 жыл бұрын
Stoney3K Nope, they share a type rating with the 737NG, the large screens go to waste on the 737MAX because they are used in the same layout as the older 737s, just bigger, so no electronic checklist etc.

When the crew turns off the engines but forgets to turn off the anti-collision lights for an odd minute or two, as they've slowed down to a near stop/complete stop. You as a ramp worker twist your mustache heavily, as you patiently wait.

That's not really a joke, The navy E-2 prop plane has hypnotized people into the blades. We were warned about working around them. The spinning blade gives off the most calming hum (hence the nickname hummers) and the blades look soft to the touch, almost daring you to reach out and touch them. It's probably more sea story than fact, but you do need to keep your guard up as they look harmless

This is one of the few times that my recommended page has actually recommended a video that I would be interested in. You have not only answered a question that was always in the back of my head every time I've been to an airport, but gone beyond and made me more informed about the functions of an aircraft. You've earned my subscription.

Bonus fact, the tip of the spiral is sometimes made of rubber, this is to stop ice forming, it vibrates the ice off when the main fan blades at the front of the engine start spinning .

Hmmmm, there is a manifold that circles the intake lip of the engine that they pipe in hot air to heat up the intake. A sensor is inside the intake just before the blades. When that ices over, you get the caution for engine ice.

@avamendez1272
@avamendez1272 6 жыл бұрын
sean li can't speak for the 737 but on the Airbus, it is fadec (full authority digital engine control) controled. turned engine starting into a non event. The selector is rotated to IGN/START, the #2 engine master is placed to ON and that's basically it. the rest of the sequence proceedes without pilot intervention: 16 % ignition ON 22% starts fuel flow At 50% start valve closes, ignition off Engine idle should stabilize at about 58% ENG mode selector to NORM Normal Idle Approx. 20% N1, 400C EGT, 60% N2, 600 lbs/hr FF.

I don't SPECIFICALLY know the startup procedure of the 737 (by airline checklist), but from my flight sim experience (which doesn't base my knowledge) here are the basic steps: 1. Connect to external power or startup the battery 2. Turn on the APU 3. Once APU is on you can open fuel pumps 4. Turn on hydraulic pumps as well 5. Turn the left engine start switch to the start pos. and wait till 23% N2, then put fuel cutoff on idle 6. Turn the start switch back to ground 7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the right engine 8. Before reaching the runway you need to turn off the APU to save fuel Correct me if I'm wrong in any of the steps above.
