Ronny great logical review. No doubt the Troopy is the best 4x4. As I don’t tour and all my off-roading is within 300km, I can get away with a SWB off-roader. Being an weekend warrior. I enjoy the capability of a 2 door Rubicon, as it is the closest thing to an off-road buggy.

Same here, I've an '06 Escape and its objectively fair to put it close to last within the context of this criteria but it has served me fantastically and exceeded all my expectations for the things that I require of a car. Definitely good food for thought on the next one though.

I've got a 2013 150 Prado 3.0 TD, and it gets me to wherever I want to go. Spends most of its life driving highway, is comfortable, fuel efficient, and drives very much like a car (not like a truck). When I want to go offroad, let the tyres down, select center diff, and off i go. Thought about getting a 200 series, or the new 300.. but the Prado does everything I want, and has never let me down. Plus with the new TD motors, I don't like DFS, so having a non-DFS model is good.

I think the troopy scores so well here is because as you and Andrew from 4xoverland has said, you can do anything with it. It’s a blank canvas that can be turned into whatever you want. Very versatile vehicle that combines the practicality of a van with heavy duty 4wd chassis.

Really fun episode! The one thing I disagree with - the score of 13 for IFS wagons for the Fuel section. Though it's only 1 vehicle of many in the category, I'd consider the fuel economy, tank size and load one of the best things about my 120 series prado. We went up to Steep Point in November: myself, my partner and our 4 month old baby. Absolutely packed to the roof of the car, 'sagging in the back' level of loaded down. The car still delivered somewhere around 10L to the 100km which is incredible! Coming from Bunbury, we made it to the Overlander. Topped up, went to Steep Point, hit some tracks there, went to Monkey Mia, did a few tracks south of there, and only topped up at the Overlander once more on the way back down. Absolute weapon :) Still, a great vid!

As a 120 owner I agree, I don't get as good a fuel economy as that any more as it is 19 years old. It is still an epic long range tourer. You can't beat the 180l tank. In 2021 drove through Mt Augusta, karajini, mill stream and coral bay, never panicked about fuel stops, unlike our friends who went with us in a Ford ranga.

Nice video. In my opinion, the title should say "overlander" and not 4x4. I like the definition that Matt (morr) said about the difference between overlander and 4x4... "4x4 is when overlanders can't go, they are too tall and heavy on the roof and they flip" (something like that). Also, there are like 3 categories related to "home on wheels". I am a weekend warrior so I only sleep one night outside, I rather be light and sneaky, than carrying fuel, water, energy, dual batts, drawer systems, wtc... The lighter, the better.

I did similar rating for myself several years ago and came to the same conclusions. Glad to see that someone with that much of experience confirm my newbie thoughts =). Got myself a live axel wagon (LC 105) with petrol. It is heavy on your bank account when it comes to fuel economy but it is such a nice all rounder, can't complain. Went to pretty crazy tracks, got stuck only once in 3 years. One thing you don't talk about is potential panel damage. In wagons the risk quite a bit higher =).

@@Will-nb8qk The power band is way wider, you have more various RPM ranges to play with and because of that it is easier to drive on sand. Unless you're doing heavy towing, I wouldn't go diesel. TBH I'm dreaming about hybrid Hilux. Another thing I'm thinking about is to buy a wreck of Rav4 Hybrid and pull power train out of it and try to swap. In Rav4 it does 5.5 per 100, so if it'll be 10 per 100 in LC instead of 20, that would be a dream =)

Here in the US, my first thought was (regarding "common" off roaders) the 80 Series LC. But being in Australia, I can see the Troopy being the best. The US made heavy duty trucks are decent, but almost too big for any amount of tighter trails. For touring, they are great. Anything technical, not so much.

Love this. Here in the US I drive an ifs full size wagon with a v8 petrol and factory max towing package (upgraded cooling system and reduction gears from factory) and it serves me perfectly (chevy tahoe z71 offroad package) Tons of power to tow, tons of gearing to climb, tons of space for storage (so much so that I often just sleep inside the cab) and is very comfortable on the road. The only down sides are torsion bar suspension up front and the fact that she's addicted to gasoline. Not as offroad capable as friends with jeeps or toyotas, but far more comfortable than most of those, far more space inside, and a much further range thanks to massive fuel tank. Again, serves my needs perfectly. Love the channel Ronny

In general I would agree with most of this, but it comes down to personal priorities. One strange score was the troopy beating ifs dual cab on fuel. I understand your reasoning, but it seems to disregard actual fuel usage. I fully pack up my hilux for a trip and get ~ 10L/100km (depending on how much 110kph I do). I don't know what a troopy would use, but I can't see it being anywhere near that.

Nothing I could argue with at all in your conclusions. That said I drive a VERY small 4X4 (1979 Jeep CJ5) and while it can run circles around almost anything larger off road, it has it's major drawbacks. No load hauling to speak of, almost zero creature comforts, a ride like a buckboard on and off road, and very limited "personal space" in it. I would never trade it for anything else on the list for the way I use it, but I would place it almost exactly where you have the small live axle rigs on the list.

Nice first run, Ronnie, but a couple of suggestions for the next crack: Fuel: no mention of efficiency. Storage capacity is negated if you burn through it like no ones business Work & Play: I know you're from WA, but not everyone is a tradie. Lots of people still need their vehicle for work also and have to travel long distances, but instead of needing to carry tools have to factor in the comfort, agilty, and fuel economy of the vehicle Affordability: I understand this is a bit of a "if money wasn't a factor" assessment, but when many 4x4s are upwards of $70k before mods this should be considered for a practical review Either way, good watch as always, keep it up.

Brilliant sound system, brilliant lights, brilliant safety. It can work, (aka) tow a trailer, and it can overland and play. It can take 18inch rims, it can take a load, it can take a variety of accessories, and it looks great. The two things it doesn’t have is a good reputation, and good fuel economy, but I think it will fair better than most V8s. What is it? Land Rover Discovery 4 5.0 V8 HSE. The best 4x4xfar. This is a great comparison if money is no issue, however for most people it is. The troopy/live axle dual cabs cost in a lot of cases twice as much as an ifs dual cab. $30k, $40k, $100k saving is a lot of money for mods/fuel/travelling etc

Love the channel, @Ronny. Watched nearly every episode. Fun to watch it evolve. From a dataviz standpoint it would be better to resort the vehicles in each category from greatest to least score. It’s less important that they be in the same order in every category. As it is you can only visually see the highs and lows but the in between all look about the same without a descending sort. My opinion anyway. Take care and cheers!

Thanks for the good sum up, I do agree with most of it, maybe score the van a bit more, i've seen mitsubishi delicas doing well... There are high-roof live axle wagons exist :) Like the Y60 nissan patrol/safari and the 60-series land cruiser, both could have a high-roof option, there is quite a bit more room inside than a usual wagon and no disadvantages of the troopy. But they are rare beasts, of course..

Well-considered and regardless it will always be controversial. Form v Function, head v heart purchase and brand loyalty. No one vehicle can do everything. On a side note, I never realised the rhinohide on the prado (perhaps other wagons too) covers the fuel filler point....something to consider.

A fair amount of thought into this and the troopy is definitely a very reasonable choice for an overall best because it dose fill the criteria very well. How I see it as a general purpose and overland vehicle a duel cab of any type is good, be it solid axle or ifs because of the load capacity and comfort for passengers. With all that being said if money wasnt an issue a troopy for me would be a vehicle i would have, then as a small play 4x4 the jimny is great but not a suited to long overland trips. As always really enjoy the content Ronny 👌🏽🤠

As a petrol 105 series cruiser owner; I gotta say that when given a choice, I will still take my car for small trips. To be fair; I am moving to new Hilux SR. The 105 is a tank; and it has never failed me. But I dont leverage that power and capability that often. Last time was to rip iron bark trees from a hill and dirt ... and the car *loved it* .. no skittering/movement - It was me chosing the right line vs capability. I choose one situation wrong; but the car didn't care; and gave me the option to change and rip the iron bark from the hill. And it did exactly that.

I was actually surprised that you didn't end up with a "the best is the one that is best FOR YOU" like so many videos. One thing that provides a little bias is the climate a vehicle is used in. The warmer the climate the less relevant a "home on wheels" is, the colder or wetter the climate the more important load carrying, the ability to have "inside living space" etc. become. Interesting enough, I actually agree that the Troopy is the best combination of many qualities if you can live with the very few downsides (only good for two people, narrow living space, inside living mostly okay for one person, only in emergencies for two, etc.). I opted for the double cab 79 for one simple reason: it's so flexible. I actually wanted a single cab to have a massive blank canvas to build on, but then I can't go out with more than two or three people and that's a non-starter. So it had to have a second row of usable seats (which can be taken out when traveling with just two people - which then makes the load carrying very good because you have tons of inside space you can use), we considered Hilux (we drive a 4Runner right now) and discounted it for the pain of the very vulnerable front suspension. The 4Runner is so easily damaged there and goes incredibly easy out of alignment. So, we decided on a 79 Dual Cab for our next travel vehicle (based out of Europe, therefore unfortunately a petrol engine). The petrol vs. diesel option is also a two edged sword - the modern diesels are not good when you go to places that don't have high fuel quality and the fuel/injection system is rather picky. The main upside is lower consumption and it's a bit safer. It's actually easier to take a relatively modern (nobody in their right mind would call a 79 modern) petrol engine and drive it in many countries than a modern diesel engine with particulate filter. So many things to consider there, it's a very difficult question to answer. Also, availability of accessories massively depends on the market you're in. Australia or South Africa is incredible for Land Cruiser 70 Series. Europe or the US - your out of luck. Defenders - parts available everywhere, partly because you damn near need them everywhere and all the time. So, great video, I really liked it! But in the end: make a list of needs and give ratings how well the vehicle (class) does every point on the list and you might end up with something quite different for each person.

I live in Saudi Arabia. The best 4 wheel car ever made is the FZJ80. Reliable: It can outlive a human. Efficient: Chassis is stiff, wires are of good quality, visibility is the best, and you can heavy modify it. Fun to drive: the car is good in quality. Everything you touch inside the car is tuff. Character: long travel wheels, solid axles, beautiful design, and powerful engine (for it’s time). I love my buddy, he’s the best land cruiser ever made.

Interesting video. You mentioned it is not biased, but this is one of those videos that can't be unbiased. As you mentioned yourself, it is biased based on your experience (not based on what car you have). Also, I'd consider 'dust everywhere', which is a problem with almost all UTEs /Pickups.

Those are considered light-duty trucks here in the United States. Trucks for actual 'hard use' are 2500/3500 models. Most of them gas, diesels for towing. Check out the Ram Power Wagon. 2500, 6.4 Gas V8, Front & Real Lockers, front sway bar disconnect, 12,000 lb Warn Zeon Winch, and can fit 37" tires from the factory with a wheel offset change. 35" tires with no mods.

I have an interesting argument for general comfort saying that a live axle is more comfortable. Main reason being due to it having so much suspension travel is suspension is tuned correctly it has much more space to dampen and decrease harshness and make for a more comfortable ride, offroad I find my 105 vastly more comfortable then my old man's 200 purely because it just has so much more suspension travel to use to make for a more comfortable drive

I have an old Pajero, Petrol and everything works fine in it. I used to own a brand new Navara and it got damaged on the tracks. 2 times I went out in it and both times damaged. Hence the Pajero. I did happen to go in a dual cab 79 series on the weekend. ( No electric windows) I did the same tracks in the afternoon in the Pajero as the 79 in the morning and its like the Dual cab was on Bitumen. The Pajero feels everything and you really have to drive the car. Sure its only a toy for me as I have a daily. But I feel like a real 4wdriver even thou having to take consideration the vehicle I'm in and my in-experience. I would love a troopy but im loving the old Pajero. I don't think it matters too much as long as you walk away from the day with a smile.

When ever a KZbin title is posed in the form of a question …the answer is no … therefore there is no best 4x4 … The answer to what do the professional off-road drivers drive …what ever their sponsors will sponsor … then you need to list achievements such as crossing all seven continents and driving to the North Pole and world wide sales figures (popularity contest) …then honorable mentions like tube frame buggies/racers, moon rover etc … then you still get something with a LandCruiser badge like the 70 series Troopy …so well done on handicapping the race … now can we start an argument/debate over the best sandwich while driving to BFE … I vote Burrito/wrap!!! Hehe!! Thanks for sharing!!

Ronny Dahl is pretty spot on here except me personally I would say the wagon is the best simply because they generally have coils all round which means they are more comfy, are able to get a lot of suspension flex very easily. Keeping in mind some people spend 10s of thousands to get that suspension type under their IFS/LEAF suspension. So yeah my take is the wagon is better. And I'd probably say more specifically its between the 80 series, GU or GQ of which one is the best. Some will say the patrols because of their tougher drive line, some will say 80 because of the better diesel engines.

ASPW will grinning smuggly after watching this LOL. Something missing though, modern safety, which you may have taken into account in the 'family' section. Most of the solid axle vehicles would be low in this respect as they are based on ageing designs. Take solid axle wagons, does any sell new models anymore? In Aus its only the 76, incoming Ineos and Jeep. There's whole lot of road between home and tracks. Cool episode. Thanks
