I've had the Neiko for a couple years of occasional use, and it's continued to work really well. If this one wears out, I'll probably go for the Rennsteig. I've been incredibly impressed with all of my German tools, and have been steadily growing my collection of NWS, Felo, Wera, etc. Starett probably makes the "best" center punch (and other measuring tools), but the price point really makes it feasible only for professional machinists (or those with unlimited tool funds.)

Besides striking force and build quality the punch it self must be the most important piece of this tool. What I would look for is what steel/material it is made of and if there are replacement to be bought. I would guess Tungsten carbide would be a great choice for the punch.

Tungsten is brittle, if you don't want to punch holes in HSS you will be better with HSS punch

I just bought the cheapest one style at Harbor Freight for $1.99. It is sold under the Pittsburgh Tool name and has a lifetime warranty. If it wears out, I’ll just exchange it for a new one. HF is a mile from my house so it is no bother to return anything really.

I have a Neiko and a set (4) of the Rennsteig. The Neiko is my goto simply because it is small and convenient. The Rennsteig I use if I need to punch through.They are power monsters. There are four models and range from I'm not sure to 250 newtons. A newton is a measure of kinetic energy (or force) roughly it is the amount of force to accelerate (or move) 2.2 lbs (1 Kilo) 39 inches (a meter) in one second. Lets say that the 250 newton punch will punch a hole in your head no problem. As far as the punches go I like that I can use them one handed while hanging on a ladder, Sometimes using the Rennsteig I have to lean into it and throw my weight into it to make the punch, the Neiko, much easier to use. So far in the past fives years none have disappointed me. Also a good basic survival tool; I carry one in my car in case I have to get myself or someone else out in a hurry.

How long do these potentially last? I've been getting cheapos from Lowe's and they seem to stop working after like 10-15 times. The spring gets messed up or something and the mechanism stops working. Doesn't actually punch.

Mine stopped working / got jammed too. I then grinded a very small bevel on the end of the pin so that it was not getting jammed were it's supposed to be released into the hole.

The Rennsteig model you link to has a 60-130 N Striking Force, but for around the same price they have two other models: 20-50 N and 180-250 N. Are there advantages to getting this 'Goldilocks' model, or are there no good reasons not to get the more powerful model?

It depends on what you punch in. If you are using it on soft aluminum or brass all the time there is no sense in wearing your hand out using something powerful. If you are punching stainless steel all day the weak one won't do you any good. If you work on everything but mostly just mild steel the mid grade will be the best. From time to time it will make due on stainless or the few time you work on aluminum. I work on mild steel 99% of the time and used to use the $2 brass harbor freight ones. They worked fine but the tips dulled and after a year had to be replaced. Ponied up for the general model 79 and it's great. Best yet the tips are replaceable. For $16 hard to beat. If the larger head is a selling point and turning you away from a better tool just go get a cheap automotive shifter knob and epoxy it to the end. The knob on mine is off a fork lift. Bit smaller than the ones on store bought models but fits in my pocket better while still giving comfort.

For aluminum, can't you just take an old star screw driver and push + twist until there's a small start hole for drilling? I mean aluminum is quite soft, so I doubt I need this tool at all.

You're describing a traditional center punch, which is used with a hammer. They work just fine, but the benefit of automatic center punches like these, is they're much faster and can be used with one hand.

I wouldn't recommend the mid price $10 punch. I've had two, after only about 50 cycles they becomes erratic and occasionally won't 'auto punch'. After 100 cycles it's becomes so frustrating trying to get them to punch that they went into the trash! Typical of so many modern budget, tools - OK for very limited use only.

Yeah, for this reason I stick with my scratch awl and a good push from my palm to make starting notches (I mostly work with wood which is easy to make a dent).

Thank you for introducing me to the Rennsteig Adjustable Automatic Center Punch. I bought one and it is Fantastic. Very well built. I do alot of punching of metal at work. This is way better than a hammer and cold centerpunch. May be overkill for those who do not need to use it frequently. I have used the other two and worn out the harbor freight Chinese version. Now I can get punch drunk.... HAHA

Is there another type of tool which can be used to make a center punch? My vehicle is out of commission due to an 8mm bolt snapping off while fastening my transmission pan, and I don't necessarily have another way to get to an auto parts store. I think Newton's divided by 9.81 m/s^2 (acceleration due to gravity) and you get kilograms of force! So 60N to 130N is 6.12 to 13.25 kilograms of force!

I bought a Starrett 18A on the basis of my experience of an excellent combination square of the same brand. The Starrett centre punch arrived today. Looks beautiful but it doesn't trigger the hammer at all. Doesn't anyone even test these things, before they bung 'em in a fancy box and hold out their hand for the dosh? I have disassembled, oiled and greased the device several times, fully understand how they're supposed to work, checked out KZbin videos for what might be wrong, and it still refuses to perform. At all. Back it goes. Buying a Facom instead, which is even more expensive than the Starrett!

I was very disappointed with my purchase of the cheapest type of the three, it only actually punches when its in the right mood and never when I am trying to do something critical, so its back to the old punch and hammer. I am reluctant to spend any more money in case more expensive does not equate to more reliable.

There's also Cool Tools podcast, but it unfortunately has not kept up the paradigm. It's a weekly show with the fantastic Kevin Kelly and another guy, where a guest comes on and talks about a few of their favorite tools. Sounds great! Unfortunately, almost all the guests--while occasionally interesting--are writers and such, who suggest the exact writing software/journals/etc. over and over. It's only on a rare occasion that a guest is experienced with and discusses _physical_ tools. :/

Viewers should know that this person is paid to say what he says by the products he reviews. I say this because truly unbiased reviewers do not accept payment by the products or sellers that they review. That said, I don't see any misleading statements or lies, however I don't find it silly for someone to pay the extra money for a better brand such as Starrett, which doesn't cost much more than the model promoted here, and yet it's long-term trusted and true. Snap-on models cost same or less; and they're also tried and true by real professionals. If you plan on using a tool often, it's less distracting, more productive, and usually more cost efficient over time to just "buy once, cry once" and get the best. Then you have a tool you feel good about that can be passed down generations.

I'll let you in on something. Tools like this that are so called snap on are rebadged. They do make their wrenches and many other tools but not most of the smaller or specialty tools. As for being used by professionals, yeah if you hand deliver to their place of business so they don't have to leave work to go buy something then yes they will buy from you. If it wasn't for their method of selling off a truck charge now and pay out forever they wouldn't be as big as they are today. I like my snap on wrenches and ratchets but there are just as good and better out there.

FWIW, Snap On generally contracts their manufacturing out to random companies (which is the reason a lot of their power tools lately have been of sub-par quality. The ones AvE (a self-avowed Snap On fan boy) have torn apart have been dismal.)
