A few things I forgot to mention while making this video are as follows: - Every time we changed fuels, we completely drained the tank to do our absolute best to not contaminate the next fuel sample with the previously tested fuel. - We used a 'Drain Fuel' function using Integrated Engineering tuning software to empty the tank. It runs the Low Pressure Fuel Pump. We connected an external fuel line to the fuel system, and we ran it until the tank was completely dry. - The dyno numbers that are shown are uncorrected. - These test results ONLY PERTAIN to the area surrounding Vancouver, BC, Canada. Fuel will differ all over the world, and by no means do these tests represent fuel found at these particular brands all over the world. Thanks for watching!

Adam, Just watched some of your videos on petro products. From reading some of the comments and from your videos it would seem that no one actually knows and the refined products industry distribution works(at least for western Canada). So let me try and unpack some of this for you and your viewers from when I was in the refining industry in Alberta. Every refinery has contracts with practically every other refinery for supply. So just because the gas station says Shell on the pumps( or any other gas station)doesn't mean it's products come from the Shell refinery in Fort Sask. At the refinery I worked in for 8 years, we supplied most fuels(not all to some of the retail stations) to Esso, Shell, PetroCan, Coop etc etc in the Calgary region. For example in Regina where the Coop refinery is located, they will supply all the fuels for every brand in the area and probably in Manitoba as well. The only differences will be each brands additive package, which gets added while the tanker trucks or rail cars are getting loaded. Our refinery also supplied fuels to Montana and Washington state. As for Costco, the last I knew was they had a contract with Imperial Oil refinery in Fort Sask, although that may have changed since then, Costco basically goes for who ever will give them the best deal. Same as Super Save gas, their contract(as of last year) was with Imperial Oil Refinery. The refinery in Burnaby supplies what products they produce to contracted retailers- could be Esso or Shell or any of the others including Chevron. And considering Chevron doesn't have a refinery in Canada anymore, their products for BC could come from any of the refineries in Fort Sask or Burnaby or possibly from the refinery in Blain Washington or who ever they can get the best contract from. Every refinery exchanges on a pretty much daily basis batch samples of their products to each other refineries labs for testing to ensure they meet that companies specs. During my time, Imperial Oil pretty much had the industry standard for bang-on specs for their products. Our refinery wasn't great for having consistent specs so we had to always make ours alittle higher octane to meet or exceed everyone else's spec that we supplied product to. For example, Shell(or any of the others) isn't going to supply their own refined products from their Scottford plant to their retail stations on Van Island if they can get the fuels from someone else who has a tank farm locally if it will save them money. Same in the lower mainland, there are tanks farms there which get products from no doubt all of the refineries in the Fort Sask area. It's all very convoluted now that they have several pipelines running through to the coast. So chances are that if you buy from any named service station and expect to get who ever's product is really unlikely these days, except if you live in or around Edmonton or Calgary(mostly, as Calgary has a Imperial oil tanks farm and a Shell tank farm I believe). As for PetroCan(suncor) I don't know of any tank farms that they have except in Naniamo. Long winded I know, but hopefully that explains some of the confusion when it comes to filling up your tank with the "best" fuel, as you just don't know who's product you're getting. Like I said it's all in the additive package they add and that you'll never know, not even we were allowed to know what was in each companies secret additive package.
@marty17803 ай бұрын
This should be stickied at the top of the comments. We are really comparing additive packages here. Still good to know which one is the most potent! In Europe, Shell 100 octane (RON) is readily available (Equivalent to roughly 96 octane here) 😢

I delivered fuel for 15yrs in the lower mainland and can tell you know what you’re talking about. I would say however that any distinction because of brand additives is pretty much also meaningless. That’s because the amount of additive you’d receive in a single full tank of fuel in your car will be absolutely minuscule. We had to add it manually at times at the station and the ratio was on average maybe 6-8 litres per 60,000 litres of fuel. We talking about a few drops in your fill-up at most…it’s a ridiculously small amount. I was always suspicious that the “additive” was just some horrible extremely toxic shit that they didn’t know what to do with so they’ve found somewhere to dispose of it and marketed it as something beneficial for your engine. You know, like fluoride in your drinking water.
@wally61933 ай бұрын
@@rg5445 Yes most of what you say wouldn't surprise me. Where I was the additives were added by metered injection into the lines just before the metered head at the loading rails. I don't recall how much was being injected per volume, but yes not much. As for the additive there were a few different tanks depending on the client. Most additives are sourced/supplied by the clients, but only one or two manufacturers make it, no different than the additives in the motor oils which are made by only a few manufacturers. Is it toxic, well no more or less I suppose than the fuel it self. I recall Shell would not hand over the MSDS sheets for their additives as they claimed it was a secret formula, as in it was their additive that was screwing up the gastank gauges in so many cars at one point, haha, so they had to reformulate. Shell now says they put a minimum of 2 or 3 times more in their fuel than anyone else. Don't get me started on fluoride in water, lol.

I could never achieve an extra 10 hp. as the Audi 4L. V8 received. My boost in both areas of power would be negligible if any. On the other hand, 94 octane is going to squash any possibility of engine knock. I would hope that you would in the future do a video on fuel cleaning additives the oil companies utilize for their fuel. It tends to be a big secret; even with Top Tier fuels.

Was a fuel learning run ran in between. When you put better fuel you should drive at highway speeds for about 10 mins while varying your rpms. And then your car's ecu should realize that it has better fuel and adjust itself. Very important step because until you do that your ecu thinks it still has the same fuel
@VancityAudi3 ай бұрын
You are 100% incorrect with your assumptions. That's not at all how modern-day ECU's work. As soon as the fuel is better or worse in the gas tank, the ECU will either adapt positively or negatively within a few runs as I clearly demonstrated in this video, as well as every other fuel comparison I've done prior to this video.
@4u2nvinmtl2 ай бұрын
In Montreal it varies from station to station, but for me personally (6.1L Jeep SRT, I see one in the background @19:08) I use 94 Petro-Canada because my car is tuned for 93 octane (US email tune) and every other station only sells 91. Note: 94 octane is achieved with ethanol unlike US brands where some 93 octane's don't use any ethanol. The odd thing is i get (short) knock from some Petro-Canada 94 octane gas stations (I assume it's old gas or water is seeping into the tank somehow). There's also a summer and winter blend of gas (different performance between the two)
@VancityAudi2 ай бұрын
I'm not sure if you meant it to sound this way or if you're simply misled. Your Petro Ultra and Xclean 94 are not 94 because of the additional ethanol. That formula simply contains ethanol, just like many, if not almost all of the premium fuels do across Canada now with some expectations. I can also tell you were either commenting on the video before you had finished it, or you skipped sections because I covered the summer vs winter blend in the video and how they differ.
@4u2nvinmtl2 ай бұрын
@@VancityAudi well if they didnt have the ethanol content the fule woulnt be 94 octane. Just like your 94, and e85 blend makes more power. Try methanol next time 😉 I find it performs really well and its cheaper than buying vp race fule.
@VancityAudi2 ай бұрын
@4u2nvinmtl I'm not sure where you're getting your information from, but you're incorrect. Our local 87 octane fuel has up to 10% ethanol in it too. That isn't what brings it up to 87 octane. It is simply contained within the blend, just like your 94 octane is. There was a federal mandate put in last year that eventually all fuels at Canadian pumps need to contain up to 10% ethanol. That is still being implemented across the country.

Hi great video, I think winter fuel has more ethanol to reduce ice freezing in gaslines. On the prairies before winter fuels were available we had to add ISOPROPYL to a fuel tank to remove the frozen ice in a gas line when >(-30). As you know water and gasoline don’t mix, and the separated water can then freeze and block the line

Thank you. As I explained in the video though, winter blends contain LESS ethanol than the summer blends. The higher the ethanol content the more difficult it is to start your engine. A prime example of this is when vehicles are tuned to run high ethanol blends like my 2018 Audi RS3 which is tuned to run E85. It has an extremely difficult time starting in the winter months when it is cold out vs the summer months when it fires right up even when running an 85% ethanol blend.

I run a fuel terminal in oregon, all fuel at every station is made to a spec the only difference is going to be your additive that is blended at the rack when the truck is loading, we all use the same spec for fuel and the same ethanol, we have one pipeline here that supplies all the terminals all of our refineries put a required spec of whatever grade fuel into the same pipeline to get it to us, and then when its in our tanks we even can ship each other fuel between terminals to keep them or us supplied, meaning shell to chevron or chevron to p66 transfers, so when i here someone say there car runs better on a certain fuel around here its pretty much bs because we are all using the same spec fuel and ethanol, there are just differences in certain brands additive and the amount they use, when you see top tier fuel it has nothing to do with the base product gasoline it just means they inject more fuel additive in at the loading rack when the truck is loaded.
@VancityAudi3 ай бұрын
Things work a little differently here in Canada, but very similar. Yes, they all come from the same base fuels that are created at different refineries. They have to meet a certain spec in order to be sold. With that said each brand uses their own blend of additives which does make a massive difference in terms of performance. This is like the 4 or 5th time we have done fuel comparisons on this channel and have consistently seen better performance in some fuels compared to others based off the additives that are being used by a particular company.

You should try E46 M3, that S54 engine would show any difference in quality of fuel very obviously. But my question is if more power means better quality in terms of reliability, protection of engine, fuel system, carbon build up, etc? Or that requires more in depth tests perhaps?
@VancityAudi16 күн бұрын
I won't be performing any more fuel comparisons. I would imagine that quality of fuel would make a difference in that motor as well. Just not as much because it is naturally aspirated. More power most certainly doesn't equal better reliability, protection of the engine, fuel system or carbon build up. These tests are simply done to find out which fuel provides the most resistance to knock in order to make the most power.
@EvilUSEmpire16 күн бұрын
@@VancityAudi Thank you very much, it is a very difficult test, I am sure it was a lot of work for you to provide us with this valuable video. I used to have E46 M3 and I just bought Z4 M which has the same engine, I could clearly feel the difference between Petro Canada (Suncor) Octane 94 and other brands 91 in 2008 in Toronto, But I don't feel any difference in term of power or fuel efficiency in my 2012 M3. I see carbon build up in my M3 engine and I am not sure which gas is the best to solve this issue. Perhaps Shell 93?
@VancityAudi11 күн бұрын
@@EvilUSEmpire Sadly I've heard it all before from many people saying they could "feel the difference" and then when I actually tested it for them there was little to no difference other than possibly a placebo effect. Now if you had logs from the two different fuels that I could look at, I'd then believe you if I could see additional timing gained from one fuel to another on your naturally aspirated car. In terms of solving carbon build up, add some port injectors! They'll clean that all right up! Haha

Good stuff! I owned a 2012 RDX that required 91 (I guess back then tuning it out wasn't an option), made my peace with the price at the pump. Switched to a 2019 Odyssey and it runs 11.5 compression but only calls for 87. I tried a tank of 89 and my fuel economy over similar temps and driving conditions (work commuting) improved. Would you guys consider doing another 87 vs 89/91 in car that doesn't require it? Maybe use a couple styles of engines (NA vs Turbo)?

As I understand it, all Shell fuel for western Canada, is refined at the Fort Saskatchewan (Edmonton-ish) Scotford Refinery. What are the difference between Edmonton 93 and Vancouver 93? Is the Vancouver 93 modified somehow once it arrives in the Lower Mainland, or is it different fuel when it departs Scotford? Cheers
@VancityAudi6 ай бұрын
This sounds like a question for Shell, Canada. Sorry
@wally61935 ай бұрын
Not necessarily true. Every refinery has contracts with other refineries for supply. We also supplied fuels to Montana and Washington state. And considering Chevron doesn't have a refinery in Canada anymore, their products for BC could come from any of the refineries in Fort Sask or possibly from the refinery in Blain Washington or who ever they can get the best contract from.
