Or, even better, you start with the theatrical versions of the original trilogy, then you watch the prequel trilogy, then you watch the special editions of the original trilogy, and then the sequel trilogy. The theatrical versions are the original timeline, but by going back in time to the prequels, you change the future and cause the original trilogy to get overwritten by the special editions.

@@gubblfisch350 unpopular opinion: the mortis arc is overrated. Mainly because the son makes no sense. He tries to kill his father and sister then gets all sad when they die. I think the father said killing himself took the sons power but the son actually tried killing him last episode only for sister to take the blade which upset him even though he had just tried to kill her too. I think the Machete Order, ANH, ESB, TPM, AOTC, ROTS, ROTJ is the best order for new viewers because it keeps the most reveals and important backstories intact. You start off to an amazing start (which is very important for newcomers), and during the time gap between ESB and ROTJ you learn the backstory of Anakin (which is important because in ROTJ you see his turn back to the light), learn that Palpatine was the mysterious Emperor from ESB and how he turned Anakin, and get a much better and more shocking reveal in ROTS that Leia is Luke's sister.

Here's my preferred order, whichI like to call the Climactic Contrast Order: Ep 1, The Phantom Menace Rogue One Ep 4, A New Hope Ep 2, Attack of the Clones Ep 5, The Empire Strikes Back Ep 3, Revenge of the Sith Ep 6, Return of the Jedi (From there you can watch Solo, 7, 8, and 9, but idk about the best place to have Solo yet. I don't think it needs to be in here really. If 9 ends up being really good too, we might be able to just leave 8 out... hopefully.) Here's my SPOILER-FILLED explanation: Ep 1, The Phantom Menace We start here because it is visually exciting and has pacing that a modern audience can most easily get into. You are introduced to a young Obi-Wan firstly, which centralizes his character, then you get Anakin as a young boy -- at his most vulnerable stage. Tatooine is also an early setting that creates a good link with Ep 4. The Jedi and Sith are smoothly introduced, and the universe overall is set up pretty clearly. It also has the best lightsaber fight in the series. Rogue One This film is optional in the order, but it's one of the best in the series, so you shouldn't leave it out. Rogue One is here to present an immediate tonal contrast to Ep 1. The characters you knew are gone. The Jedi and Republic are gone. The bright colors are all gone. This helps to create intrigue into what happened in the time jump since Ep 1, which can help a new viewer to feel invested in the prequel trilogy. The happy, playful universe suddenly turns dark, showing that something happened. Something in this universe went horribly wrong, the Sith/Empire have seized power, and the Force exists only as a legend. Having the war part of Star Wars shown at this point also allows that element to sink in -- there is a massive war going on in the background of the series that we don't always see. Rogue One shows us the stakes and the costs. Ep 4, A New Hope Rogue One provides a smooth transition into Ep 4, which gets back to the Skywalker saga. The viewer now already knows Tatooine from Ep 1, and the Skywalker name is also immediately familiar. When Obi-Wan first appears, he becomes our consistent character that binds the trilogies together, since we already knew him. We also can care about him much more, because we got to know him as a young Jedi-in-training through Ep 1, making his death that much more potent. (You also get Qui-Gon's death paralleled with Obi-Wan's.) Darth Vader is kind of clunky in his movement, and his fight with Obi-Wan is kinda sub-par, but his scene at the end of Rogue One allows us to see him at his most terrifying at the very beginning, so we know what he is really capable of. Obi-Wan telling of Anakin being murdered by Darth Vader also helps us care more about Anakin in the prequels and creates some solid foreshadowing of the events that will unfold. Ep 2, Attack of the Clones Now we flash backward to the universe before the fall of the Jedi and return to Anakin and young Obi-Wan's story. We have had more time to care about these two characters and learn of their ultimate fates, so this is where we start to fill in the gaps. We get more insight into their relationship, Anakin's tendencies toward the dark side, and his growing love for Padme. Ep 2 is how the war part of Star Wars starts to really get going, and the introduction of the Clones gets the viewer to think about their link to Stormtroopers in the original trilogy. This is where the politics of the Republic unfold, which gives better reasoning to how everything ended up so horrible in the time of Rogue One and Ep 4. Ep 5, The Empire Strikes Back This is the most important point in this order. Ep 5 gets us back to the war-torn future, where we rejoin Luke's quest to train as a Jedi. This was originally where Yoda was introduced, but now we have gotten to know him through Ep 1 and Ep 2 during the golden age of the Jedi, so we know more about who he was and what he was capable of. It also lets us care about him more through his familiar face, further tying the two trilogies together with a recurring character, and it most importantly gives us a big big contrast between the Yoda of the Jedi Order and old hermit Yoda. Like in the transition between Ep 1 and Rogue One, the audience is left to wonder what happened to Yoda that left him in this state, putting much more weight on Ep 3. The film also concludes with the big Darth Vader reveal of course, and that get to the point of this order: The audience has now watched the majority of the series, (almost 5 out of 7 in the order,) which retains the emotional cliffhanger/climax that the scene originally had prior to the prequels being made. It's strength as the turning point of the series is not only maintained throughout this whole order, since the audience didn't know about Darth Vader's truth in Ep 1, Rogue One, Ep 4, Ep 2, and most of Ep 5, but it's made even MORE significant. With the Vader reveal kept under wraps until after Ep 1 and Ep 2 in particular, we already know Anakin as a full person -- from a young boy through his young adulthood. It's not just that Darth Vader is Luke's father. This order emphasizes that ANAKIN is Luke's father, and that sweet little kid we met at the very beginning became a monster. Ep 3, Revenge of the Sith Now we have put a TON of emotional value on what happens in this movie. Ep 3 is the final link between the trilogies, and the entirety of it becomes a true climax in the series. We carry over the power of the Vader reveal from Ep 5 directly into the wrap-up explanation of what turned Anakin to the dark side, how he became Darth Vader, and how the Republic ultimately fell and became the Galactic Empire. We see the Jedi completely slaughtered, with Obi-Wan and Yoda going into hiding. All the pieces of the puzzle fall together. Ep 3 also ends with the birth of Luke and Leia -- when the prequels were made, the audience already knew the truth of their relationship, but in this order it becomes a bomb-drop "Woah woah woah, wait WHAT" kind of reveal at the very end that leaves the audience hanging on the edge to get into the next film. Ep 6, Return of the Jedi As we see the Jedi fall in Ep 3, we then see the rise of the Jedi once again through Luke in Ep 6. Now that that craziness of all the other movies is solved following Ep 3, we finish the last puzzle with Obi-Wan affirming that Luke and Leia are twin siblings. The Emperor is introduced, but unlike him being just there all of a sudden in the original order of the series, we now know him more fully as Palpatine, who was fleshed out through the prequels. This makes his demise all the more meaningful and satisfying. With the final deaths of both Anakin and Yoda, Ep 6 gets to be a more solid closer for both the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy. From there, you can watch 7, 8, and 9 in numerical order. Solo doesn't really fit into this, but I figure it's a nice little spin-off to throw in after watching everything else. WHY THIS ORDER? - Both trilogies are told in their respective orders, leaving climaxes for last. - The flip-flopping allows viewers to see the parallels between Anakin and Luke more clearly. - The flip-flopping more importantly provides a stark contrast between the two eras in the drastic tonal shift, giving a greater sense of mystery. (The audience gets to ask the question, "What happened in between these two stories?" and has it answered by the prequels as the original trilogy unfolds.) - Obi-Wan and Yoda become the consistent characters that tie both stories together during the flip-flopping, with Palpatine also being a more consistent villain before Ep 6. - The Skywalker prophecy can be applied more actively to Luke and Leia as well as Anakin, whereas Anakin was originally the only one discussed related to the prophecy. - Every movie has a specific purpose in this order, so Ep 1 for example has way more value and meaning to it, whereas other orders often leave it as optional. - The most important moment in the saga -- the Darth Vader reveal in Ep 5 -- is saved until near the end, so the jarring effect it originally had can still be effective, and it becomes arguably MORE impactful because of the prequels you watch before it. (Essentially, all the major spoiler material is kept secret for most of the saga. This makes it ideal for newcomers to the series.)

i think this order could be interesting the "flashback order": episode 4 rouge one episode 5 episode 1 + 2 certain clone wars episodes? + 3 episode 6 episode 7 solo episode 8 episode 9 this a more advanced machete order. episode 4 introduces you to the universe. rouge one shows you the sacrifices that the rebels had to go achieve luke's victory and also helps make vader more menacing. in episode 5 we learn of vader's true identity. in episodes 1-3 we learn of anakain's rise to jedi knight and fall to sith lord. we are also introduced to darth maul. we could also fit many episodes of clone wars in between episode 2-3, particularly ones involving anakain and ahsoka together. we then go back to episode 6 and see vader finally turn and luke save the universe from the empire. We then go to episode 7 and get introduced to a new cast of heroes and a new state of the galaxy. with han solo dying in the latter half of episode 7 we then watch solo to see han's beginnings now that we've seen his end. Its in this movie that we learn that maul is alive. We then finish the sequel trilogy. This is an unfinished order because i would like to include the darth maul episodes of clone wars and rebels but are unsure where to place them. we could place them after solo but i feel as tho doing so would make it take too long to get to episode 8 and, unlike the large gap between watching 5 and 6, none of the maul stuff relates to the sequels. I would also like to fit the resistance episodes that lead up to episode 7 as it introduces us to Poe, and gives us the mystery of who Kylo Ren is but it does spoil the existence of star killer base. I don't know... thoughts?

My order: Episode 4 Rogue One Episode 5 Episode 6 Solo Episode 1 Episode 2 Episode 3 Episode 7 Episode 8 Episode 9 First, you view Episode 4, the original Star Wars, the first ever made. You get an introduction to the characters of the original trilogy and see the original story that took place in 77’ and captivated the hearts and minds of so many around the world. Then, you watch Rogue One. Here, you get to see how the events that led up to Episode 4 took place and how everything set up for the next films. Then, you go back and view Episodes 5 and 6 to finish the original trilogy. Here, we learn more about who the Skywalker family is and why they are so important. We then watch Solo. This will give us a small portion of the backstories of Han Solo and Chewbacca, two of our most beloved characters from the original trilogy. After hearing about the backstory of Anakin Skywalker in Episodes 5 and 6, we now go back and witness his full backstory in Episodes 1, 2, and 3 episodically. We now know the history of Anakin and Luke Skywalker. From here, we can now pick back up after the Galactic Civil War in Episode 7. We learn of our new characters and see them develop. From there, we watch Episode 8, and to close the sequel trilogy and the saga, we emotionally view Episode 9. Closing out a story 42 years in the making. I tried my best to keep it spoiler free, I know many people that are reading perhaps haven’t seen Star Wars, or are looking for the best way to introduce their kids or someone else to Star Wars, and I personally think this is the best way.

Droids and Ewoks are no longer canon, but if you want to include them for variety, Droids takes place after Episode III, and Ewoks before Episode VI. The Holiday Special would be after Episode IV.

I'm doing IV, I, II, V, III, VI, TCW, Solo, Rogue One, VII, and VIII before IX. Watching the first 6 like this I think is the best version of withholding spoilers from both trilogies since I heard of the Machete order (Luke and Leia being twins in ROTS and Anakin being Vader in ESB) while still beginning and ending with Luke, and VII is jarring in scale and style no matter which trilogy your coming from so thats why I'm squeezing in the others in between. Also one of the more interesting things for me if this was someone's first watch-through, Ep. IV can fool someone into thinking its a standalone, so going back to the prequels you think you're beginning a new story altogether with bits and pieces that you heard about in Old Ben's history lesson before V comes in and starts tying things together with Yoda, Boba Fett, Vader, etc. while only getting one movie in between it and VI so its still Luke at the focus.

VII, VIII, & IX (Rey's story). Pros: You get to see each protagonist's story from beginning to end before moving on to the next protagonist. You still get the twists in V and VI. You get to see IV, V, & VI from the perspectives of two different protagonists and get a deeper understanding of their parallels. Cons: Since you're watching two different versions of IV, V, & VI, it takes longer to finish and may feel repetitive. The changes in the SE don't really affect the story and may be distracting after viewing the OTC.

I really loved your new take, but release order is still the best to me... The OT is the core of Star Wars, so it makes sense to start with that. If you want to (and I think it'd be the superior viewing experience) you watch the OT first, you get interested, then you go back to check out how things went before, then you close everything full circle by reaching the OT and then adding the sequels as well... Essentially, my recommendation for a perfect first Star Wars viewing experience would be: IV, V, VI you get the bread and butter of Star Wars and then you see the full grand picture of the saga in chronological order, so I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX... The spin-off are not essential, they would only interrupt and ruin the thematics, you can watch them afterwards whenever you want

And then, she went and watch all the prequels on tv; then i show her the original trilogy in the despecialized version but all mayor twists were kinda ruined, but still she really enjoyed the movies. Knowing some characters made her experiencie a familiar one (for example the Darth Vader vs Obi Wan in Episode 4 was a really emotional scene to her), but she just keep asking me weird questions like "why Obi wan doesn´t know R2D2?" I think for someone who has never seen any Star Wars before, I would start with 4, just because it is the actual beginning of the whole franchise and you get to see Alec Guiness as Obi-Wan first, which makes him more mystical and learning about his past will be more fun. I would then go to Episodes 1 and 2 - The backstory of Obi-Wan AND Anakin. Then back to Episode 5 for the big reveal, Episode 3 to see the fall and then Episode 6 to see the redemption. Then 7, 8 and 9. If I have to put Rogue One and Solo in, I would probably watch Episode 3, then Solo, then Rogue, then Episode 6. If you have seen Star Wars before, I really like the Chronological order. Putting Episode 3, then Rogue One, then Episode 4 is a lot of fun. Solo can actually go in between 5 and 6 as a cool Han and Lando back story or you can throw it in between 3 and Rogue. But if you don't know Star Wars at all, this blows the reveal of Episode 5, so I would only recommend watching this way if you know the whole story. Of course watching Rogue, then 4, then 1, 2, 5, Solo, 3, (or 3 then Solo) 6, 7, 8, 9 may not be too bad, either. That may work for both the Novice and Seasoned fan.

@@DanielCruz-vp7mg Yes, I do. I would definitely watch Episode 4 first. Episode 1 and 2 then give some backstory that you will need. Then watching Episodes 5, 3 and 6, in that order close out the Original Story. You can then watch the new Trilogy if you want to. If you want to watch Rogue One or Solo, I would do so after Episode 6 and before the new Trilogy. (You could even watch Rogue One before Episode 4, as it leads directly into it.) Solo should probably be viewed directly before or directly after Episode 5, to give more back story on Han Solo and Lando Calrissian, who becomes a big character in Episode 5.

Here’s a viewing order to think about, it’s a little combination of the NET and flashback order into something like this: My View Star Wars Order 1) The Phantom Menace -the prologue of the Jedi vs Sith conflict, what the Galactic Republic was like, and the introduction of the prophesied Chosen One in the form of Anakin Skywalker. 2) Rogue One -THE opening crawl of the main story. 3) A New Hope -Introduction of Luke Skywalker, small hints of what happened to the Jedi, Republic, and fate of Luke’s father Anakin. As well as the state of war between the Rebellion against the Republic’s replacement the Galactic Empire. 4) Attack of the Clones -Flashback to Anakin as a young man, Jedi apprentice of Obi-Wan Kenobi, falling in love with Padme, and the outbreak of the mentioned Clone Wars. 5) The Empire Strikes Back -The war against the Empire continues as Luke learns to be a Jedi under the tutelage of Yoda and confronts Darth Vader where he learns the terrifying truth: Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader are one and the same. 6) Revenge of the Sith -The final flashback where Anakin Skywalker falls to the dark side and becomes the monster we know and fear, the fall of the Republic, the near extinction of the Jedi, the birth of twins Luke and Leia. 7) Return of the Jedi -The climax of the story, Luke becomes a full fledged Jedi Knight, three different battles, and Vader’s redemption. The circle is complete. Now Solo is optional while the sequel trilogy are also optional, depends on how well episode 9 is, Star Wars for me ends in Return of the Jedi.
