Great video. Lots of valuable information. I’ve been playing for many years however was really never interested in slide until recently. I started learning Lap Steel in C6 and have switched that guitar over to open D and now I’ve switched one of my Fenders to open G. Making steady progress and really enjoying the different textures. Makes me a more versatile guitar player. Cheers!

I saw the guitar and immediately thought that you are probably a fan of Tronzo! This is perhaps the easiest and quickest explanation of tunings👍! I (when I was young) was listening to cassettes, trying to catch the open strings at the beginning of songs at concerts😅. This is how I discovered G, D, DADGAD.

Thank you :-) And working things out by ear like that is the best way, I think. I learnt so much from studying with Tronzo - a true giant of slide guitar and music in general!

Thank you for this very informative video on tunings, For those just starting out this info is invaluable. When I discovered open tunings my slide playing took off. In my early years I just could not get a standard tuned guitar to emulate my slide heroes, Duane Allman, and all the blues greats I loved.

Thanks for checking out the video, and the support! I hope this will be helpful to others too - agree that it's something I wish I'd known about when I started out too...

Lately I like double drop D. Treating the four upper strings as open G and the lower three strings as open D. Great channel you got here! Take care.

It's very cool - I believe Tronzo learnt about it from a Lowell George interview in Guitar Player magazine years ago, where he called it the "universal tuning". I've never been able to find the interview, but I'll keep looking!

It can certainly drive a guitar player nuts trying to find certain tunings. I’ve decided to learn theory

For slide, I find open G to be by far the best, I sometimes use open D but not very often. In fact it puzzles me why open D is so popular, as open G seems far more natural to me.

Thanks David - they do sound quite different... I'm a huge Ry Cooder fan, so I decided to learn both 🙂 Happy sliding!

Open D or E gives 3 root strings. That is a big benefit.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the lesson :-) Great question - the simple answer is, you can play in any key (in the same way you can play in any key in standard tuning). That said, a couple of common approaches are - (1) capo at fret 2 and play in key of A (2) play in the key of D (that way G is the IV chord - and the open strings work great). It takes some work, but my approach has always been that I don't want to feel restricted by the tuning, so I work on being able to play in any key - takes some time, but worth it 🙂

Does the action or intonation have to change
@onefingerguitarist
@onefingerguitarist 7 ай бұрын
Depends on the tuning, but I tend to keep the action as low as I can get away with - generally a medium action, with a little relief in the neck. It's a good idea to get the intonation set in that tuning - yes 🙂
