Does the wood shell protect against heat and cold temperatures? And is it water repellant?

Yes, any fairly air/water-tight enclosure will provide some protection from drastic temperature changes and the outside is water repellent but not forever. Generally, a musician will be exposed to the elements briefly when walking to school, gig, audition, etc, or waiting for a bus/Uber., so it's perfectly suited. The flaps on the enclosure offer a bit more protection than many cases because it helps rain not get into the case through the crack in the opening. I would never suggest leaving the violin in a hot/cold truck for long periods of time for any case though. That'd be bad for it's health! 😉
