Love this! Just left the little hamlet of Kilmahog on the outskirts of Callender! Went to Loch Earn to pay homage to my ancestors! Love driving off the beaten path and go hiking in the highlands! Best Distillery ever...Cardhu!!!

First time going to Scotland I went to a pub, ended up smokin and jokin with some locals and spent the night drinking with them at their houses until morning. Just be a cool person and try to meet other cool people.

Thank you for this. We will be going next year. I'm trying to absorb as much info as possible. I want to rep the US well and not be a body yank (I'm a Texan, truly an insult in more ways than one!). This info is much appreciated.

We’ve only been to Scotland twice for three weeks each time. We have had great success with driving, walking and staying and B&B and carry on conversations with the locals. Research. KZbin; Broonfords, Shaun, Wee Scottish Lass. We can’t wait to go back.

Spot on advice! There are some places that have amazing hostels that are equivalent to 3 and 4 star hotels. I'm in my 50s and I still stay in certain hostels in certain cities because it makes for the best experience. Keeps you young!

Fly into Edinburgh stay there a couple of days, I agree B and B. Some good ones off Princes Street. Then hire a car and head for Pitlochry for a couple of days, then over Rannoch Moor to Loch Ness area then easy drive to Skye for a couple of days. Then maybe thru Inverness to Speyside ( Whisky Country ) Then go east to St Andrew's and finally back to Edinburgh. That is gonna give you everything you could ever want to see of my Hameland

Well I lived in Glasgow and environs for ten years and I quite liked the Grand Ole Opry over on the South side.

Drive yourself and rent a cottage central. Then go out and explore on your own schedule. You'll get a much better feel for the culture.

Agreed! That's what I (Rocky) do when I'm there. Then I ask people I meet where to go for dinner, drinks, cool stuff to see, etc. If you're "outgoing" and don't mind asking for help, this is the way to go!

My wife and I are planning to fly into Edinburgh and rent a Miata for the week (I own one so I'm already familiar with them, plus a tiny car is just the thing for the backroads we want to explore), pack very light because you can't put a normal suitcase in a Miata, buy our clothes as we need them and FedEx them home. As for avoiding the overly touristy bits, we are acquainted with a rather well-known, at least in Scotland, piper from Edinburgh who is going to hang out with us and show us around for a day or two! Me: I'm going to rent a McLaren for the week! Duncan (piper friend): Oh nice! Where are you planning on driving? Me: Country roads, highland roads... Duncan: Not in a McLaren you aren't, unless you can afford to return it sans side mirrors and belly pan... Me: I'll go with a Miata...

Plan ahead. Do your research. Stay in one place, in an AIRBnB if possible. Go with a few other friends or family if possible - travel is far more enjoyable when shared. And, I agree, rent a car if possible. Last time we were there, we had about 20 family members, we stayed at the Kinlochmoidart Estate in the Highlands (Clanranald region). It was remote, but we managed to adventure through much of the Highlands, the Isle of Skye, Fort William, Glencoe, among others). Some of the most interesting experiences were just wandering the Kinlochmoidart property and climbing the Highland mountains. A great experience.

I had a Scottish co-worker and he was impressed when instead of asking him what his favorite Scotch was, I asked him if he drank Buckfast... we also discussed Neds on several occasions.
