It’s been a crazy year for commercial aviation, and one of the biggest changes has been in regards to the Boeing 797 program. Although it hasn’t yet officially been announced by Boeing, it is coming. The only question is: what will it look like?
The Boeing 797 has been officially been put on the back-burner, and will be re-evaluated (from the ground up) once the project is green-lit again.
This video is a presentation of what I personally think the 797 is going to look like. Not only that, I have a few ideas on what role it will fit in their lineup as well…

I would rather have that than windows without doors. Seriously, what you are talking about is a SERIOUS safety concern. I am sure your training included visual inspection of the exterior in an emergency so that you don't deploy slides into a lake of burning fuel. I would join any effort to force the FAA to mandate windows in all doors. Then there is the matter of opening doors upon arrival. Ground personnel have to be seen (thumbs up) before opening doors from the outside and you have to know there is a jetway or stairs positioned at any door you open from the inside. Question for Boeing what is the reason for no window in a door, what is the purpose, what are you saving ?

Best option would have 757-like proportions with 787-like wings, cockpit, and engines. Hopefully has doors in the center of the fuselage. It’d need to replace the 737 series too. So its smallest size would be close to a 737-800. SANSpotter is right that it should replace both 737 and 757. A 767X with new wings and engines can handle the 7-across segment.

Boeing would probably be best suited to build the 797-8 as a replacement for the 737-9 and -10, with the 797-9 and -10 the higher capacity to capture the 757 replacement market. At that point Boeing could go all out and create an a220 competitor to fill their 737-8 market along with the slightly smaller large regional market. That would really position them to cover the whole market broadly.

@Gebenki
@Gebenki 4 жыл бұрын
The 797 doesn't need to be a 737 replacement; Boeing already had plans to replace it. The idea was to extend the life of the '37 with the MAX update, then to fill the gaping hole left by retiring 757s and 767s. After that they were planning on creating a clean-sheet design narrow body. The main thing the 797 needs that a narrow body like the A321 Neo can't match is range. It needs to be able to fly from East Coast USA deep into the interior of Europe, and vice versa. Flying these relatively long, skinny routes affordably will set the aircraft apart from anything else on the market, like the A330 Neo.
@5133937
@5133937 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. That was Boeing’s original realization, that travelers will prefer long-range point-to-point rather than hub-and-spoke travel. It was Boeing’s answer to the A380 back when it was first announced. It’s the correct and winning strategy, they just need to double down on it.

I would consider it as a replacement for both 737 and 757, with improved landing gear design, composite materials, and some other new technologies used on 787 for higher fuel efficiency. In my expectation, 797 will be in service when 737-800 starts to retire.

...the difficulty is Airbus will have their 321 XLR in service at least 3 years before the NMA (the original project name). The 737 replacement is actually designated the FSA (Future Small Aircraft). Boeing considered a 757 replacement years ago but cancelled the idea back in 2011 and instead, let the bean counters (rather than the engineers as in the past) determine the 737 (originally designed over a half century ago as a an aircraft to bring jet service to small city airports with little servicing equipment, hence the stubby undercarriage) was the route to pursue. With the Max (which I have heard Boeing might actually rebrand as the -8, -9 and -10) out of service for over a year now, Boeing has found themselves even further behind.

Word on the street is that they are going to re-work the 767 as it already has an established production line and it won't need 5-7 years to draw up and design the "797" from scratch. With the 787 and the new 777X it wouldn't make sense to jump into a brand spanking new designed jet that all of the current models have everything pretty much covered right now.

Great video, everything you said makes sense to me. The 737 had its time, but it really needs to be replaced. I don't know if I would say the short landing gear on the 737 was a mistake as that was by design to allow it to fly to smaller airports without the need for luggage ramps/equipment. But again that was when it was designed 842 years ago. Glad to see more content, keep it up 👌

The 797 won’t replace the 73 because the max will sell still and Boeing needs it to sell. The 75/76 type NEEDS a replacement with AA retiring their fleet and them being a large Boeing customer I say it will be a more efficient, faster, similar size cabin to the 757/767-200. Right around 180-220 pax. Very high bypass engines, all the bells and whistles of the newer birds flying like the C-series/A-220 jets. The true improvement will need to be the cabin. With passenger comfort and the ability to feature numerous class styles the 79 will need an almost wide body fuselage. If I had to guess Boeing’s selling point on the 797 is going to be “speed, spacious and comfortable cabin, and unparalleled efficiency”. It’ll probably cruise around 0.86-0.90 and that’ll doing so efficiently will make it a must pick for trans-con operations that the 757 was so coveted. It will also be able to hang in the international department. With the industry in the current situation don’t be surprised if there’s a freighter version early after launch as well. Freight is where Boeing truly dominates in numbers.

Boeing are this unambitious, so I imagine a tube with wings is exactly what they're planning. I do agree that a larger more versatile 737 replacement makes a lot more sense. Something that can trump the A320 series sets and range seems like the way to go in order to sell thousands of these things, rather than a few hundred with the current 797 plans.

There was talk of making a re-engined variant of the 767-300. They stated it would be mostly for cargo carriers, but they would consider a passenger variant. The 757/767 never even got an "NG" variant, which is sad. They are both good aircraft. The 757 in particular can easily out perform an A321 with ease in terms of take off ability and payload. But it seems they were more focused on the 787, especially when 757/767 orders dried up. Only time will tell!

I think that this B797 that is being proposed in this video would most likely keep the MAX’s engines since they are top performing newly designed engines. It would probably keep a lot of tech from the B737 MAX to help pilots and mechanics transition to the new platform. These types of decision are basted upon company’s not wanting to train pilots and mechanics on a new type and type-rating changes
@eleventy-seven
@eleventy-seven 2 жыл бұрын
Boeing had problems with the Max doing what you're proposing with the 797. Boeing would love to carry forward enough parts from the 737 to minimize training but the entire 737 max still doesn't comply with cockpit warning standards that minimize confusion by having a sensible hierarchy to cockpit alarms and the ability to silence them. The max was grandfathered in through DEC 2022. Without Congressional extension the737-1000 will likely not get approved. Boeing has based all of it's recent decisions on economy resulting in almost every program military space and commercial fleet being delayed by years. Lets list them. Starting with the 777x which after taking a FAA pilot for a test flight in late 2021 had a uncommanded pitch down similar to a MCAS problem that's know delayed it up to late 2025 at least. The KC-45 Pegasus is late for QC problems. The Red hawk trainer is late with unstable wing rock. The 787 has not had a delivery in over 14 months. The V-22 Is prey has had 8 crash with 51 dead. Yes the paint on the Airbus A350 is chipping but I think Boeing's economics is killing it.

The 727 was an amazing aircraft that was loved compared to the 757 which was a red headed step child. The 757 is a great plane and did well in high altitude or hot locations for performance, but the 727 out did it in everything else. It was an easy jet to fly especially with the flaps deployed. As a homage to the 747....the next 797 should have a small upper deck, the cockpit windows and nose should look like the Jumbo Jet, obviously would be a wide body jet with two engines.

I drive between here in San Francisco and Henderson, NV! Usually in mid July to mid August! Keep your car up and you'll be alright! Drive early in the morning or late at night if possible. And always pack a small cooler with ice and water. Nothing worse than having warm water or no water at all and you're in the desert this time of the year! 😩🤣 Awesome video, as usual!

Boeing should make the wing like Airbus's A350, the the fuselage should be like A220 but bigger

737 flights I've been on are always chock full! The proposed 797 should really be a little larger, not necessarily a twin aisle but just a little larger for passenger comfort.

A little larger for passenger comfort ? Never happened. A little larger so as to stuff another seat in row to generate more revenue.

The Boeing 797-6 with 48 windows with 228 seats and The Boeing 797-7 with 49 windows with 270 seats 1x1x1 in business class but the middle seats will move back a little,1x1x1 in premium economy and 2x3x2 in economy class will be straight the NLT stands for new light twin like the Boeing 787 fuselage but lighter

I would think a Wide body would be the next best thing with 2 fuseloge connected side by side and creating a flat bottom to help with lift. Making wings wider for lift and be able to still fit the plane in all current airports. I am just guessing.

The blended wing aircraft that KLM is experimenting with would be the 1st model for airlines that didn't follow the fuselage, wing, tail model. Maybe that is the thinking, going forward.
@davidkamen

The problem with any blended wing design is that it reduces uplift capacity for both passengers and cargo.

You just described the Yellowstone 1 study Boeing did between 2003 and 2010. It will be designed to accommodate either the LEAP-1A or PW1100G engines with their larger front fan diameters.

I think it couldn't be possible to modify a longhaul plane to a MoM plane. It should be cheaper and less work to create a complete new plane. Why didn't Airbus make a smaller version of the A350 and substitute the A320 family? It has reasons why not
@johnstuartsmith
@johnstuartsmith 2 жыл бұрын
By the time Boeing brings the first 797 to market, Airbus will already have delivered hundreds, maybe thousands, of different, ever-improving versions of the A321. Maybe if Boeing had a time machine, it could rewind back about 20 years, start designing the 797 instead of developing the Max, and then the 797 and the A321XLR could compete for sales. There isn't a time machine, there aren't second chances, and customers aren't likely to wait for the 797.

Your design is beautiful and you are absolutely right that it should be flexible enough to make one version a 757 replacement and and another minor tweak to become 737 replacement. I wish Boeing executives were as smart as you are.

The problem with the 737 is that the engines are too low to the ground. Look at the inlet. There is a flat spot at the bottom to maintain ground clearance. There is not enough space to install improved, high efficiency engines. A new model to replace the 737 could potentially fix that.
@caelansmith
@caelansmith 3 жыл бұрын
The 797 should compete with the A220 and A320 family of aircraft. Get some designers from Apple, Dyson, and Tesla. A new minimalist all glass flight deck. Heavily automated, both in terms of operations and manufacturing. It should also be powered by hydrogen as by 2030 it should be the cheapest and cleanest fuel source. Built in WiFi and charging for all aircraft made.

the problem with your design is on the main gear it will have to be a tandem axle main, that size of aircraft won’t be able to stop on shorter runways during heavy rain when it being operated on heavier routes.
