What is the Chaldean Church? | Faculty Insights

The Chaldean Catholic Church is an Eastern Rite of the Catholic faith based out of Iraq. In this video Fr. Ankido Sipo, a professor of theology and philosophy at JPCatholic, shares about the history of the Chaldeans, the persecution that they face in the Middle East, and the connection that JPCatholic has with the Chaldean Catholics in Southern California. Over the past decade, Chaldean seminarians have attended JPCatholic to earn their degree, and 7 alumni have become Chaldean priests. We have been blessed to have them as part of our campus community!

I am Roman Catholic. I live in Roseville, California. There is an Assyrian-Chaldean Church several miles from where I live. I will try to make it to mass there. I am drawn to the smaller indiginous communities of the Middle East. I am also curious to the Lebanese Maronites, they have a church in nearby Carmichael, California.

I am a catholic from Kerala, southern part of India, who also follows Chaldean Liturgy in our rite. St. Thomas the apostle traveled to Southern India and evangelised our people, so we also had a deep connection with Chaldean church. I am belongs to syro-malabar catholic church in India. Our church was grown by Caldaen church from 3rd to 16th century. And still we are using east liturgy which is mar addai and mari liturgy. Happy to see all brother churches.

The Nestorian term is a misnomer and mislabel for the adherents of the Church of the East. Yes, the Chaldean Catholic Church is split from the church of the east. Chaldean Catholics are ethnic Assyrians.

The root of Chaldean Church which is Assyrian Church of the East was independent from Ecumenical council in 424 AD before the Nestorian issue during Council of Ephesus in 431 AD, so they are not related. Although the timeline was quite close.

Also, if you knew your ethnic history you wouldn’t say that the church has a “Jewish Flavour” as you put it. Jewish culture and language is rooted in Assyrian (your ancestors) because they were the older and dominant culture and language. Jesus himself spoke Aramaic due to the Assyrian empires dominance of the region.

Blessed monk, Your faith seems closer to the true apostolic faith, which is orthodox. The papacy isn’t apostolic. You belong in the one true catholic and apostolic church: Orthodox Church. Roman patriarchate split in 1054 and became its own thing, and sadly infected the whole world with its heretical being. No wonder chaldeans are so lost and have become like pagans. The roman faith is a dead one (not saying that for every individual’s or priest’s faith). How can they have the right lifestyle when most our priests dont even believe in the heavenly kingdom as a reality, rather than a traditional idea repeated in church.. Check out the KZbin channel “orthodox wisdom”, there you will recognize the flavor of true Christianity and maybe pass the sermons and messages along to our lost people. God bless
