I think John Wayne summed up the code pretty well: "“I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.""

I've heard that part of it is that no matter how tough you are or how much trouble you like to cause, you do no harm to a good woman (out of respect for a lady), a preacher (since he takes care of matters of the soul, and everyone will eventually pass away), or a doctor (either because he will treat anyone at all or because there are so few doctors in the West; I've heard both reasons). I've also heard that part of the Code of the West is just using common sense. For example, if you're trying to wake up the next man to stand guard, say his name before you shake him. Not only is this gesture polite, but it keeps him from being so startled that he shoots you before he realizes what he's doing. Greet people when you approach. Again, not only a polite gesture, but also proof that you aren't a rustler trying to sneak around camp; you just want to have civil conversation. Don't wave to a guy on a horse, or you might spook his horse, and he won't be too happy with you. You can say all the bad words you want, but make sure it's only in front of livestock or men (not ladies). Don't complain. I've also heard of something called the "Rattlesnake Code," although maybe I have the name wrong. Basically, by 19th Century standards, if you shoot someone without a warning, it's murder because even a rattlesnake warns before it strikes; however, if the other person makes the first move or you warn him before making yours, you probably won't go to jail for shooting him...or so I've heard. That would be a tough video for you to do. Apparently, the "stand 40 feet apart and draw on the count of three" duel is fictional, and real duels by the upper class had much stricter rules for proper procedures, whereas duels fought by the lower class were basically just "lie in wait and neutralize the target" or "get plastered, shoot, run away, hide behind stuff, and fire again." However, you can't exactly do a video on it because if anyone sees the video and gets in trouble with the law, you don't want to be blamed for having a video teaching how to have a proper gunfight. On another note, you touched on lawyers, but how did a trial work back then? I know British movies set in this time period have a judge in a black robe and a white powdered wig, and the whole trial is very formal. If it's someone upper class, there are lawyers on both sides, but if it's for someone lower class...well, you never see a lawyer defending that person. However, I've heard that in the Old West, a circuit judge might sit behind a desk or in the saloon and prop his feet up while chewing tobacco as he hears the case. What happens to the defendant if the town where he lives doesn't have a lawyer? By the way, who is the jury? These days, selecting someone for jury duty seems to take quite some time, so how did they cough up a jury when the circuit judge was due to arrive in town? Yeah, I'll give you three guesses how the novel is going...

Perhaps to understand even the broader pounts of the Code of The West, we'd have to examine the zeitgeist of that Victorian Era- sir Walter Scott's novel _Ivanhoe_ took the English-speaking world by storm, with a tale of chivalric daring-do set in a romanticized medieval England. The tale, featuring heroic & villainous knights, damsels in distress, and a band of famous outlaws who rob from the rich and give to the poor shaped the discussion of etiquette in genteel society. In imitation of these fictitious knights of old, a trend in facial hair began. The Code of The West and its variants was likely a modified & pragmatized version of this romanticized chivalry, combined with western practicality, given nobody gets chased by bears or cougars in Ivanhoe.

On that note here is an observation by Dr Clyde Wilson of University of South Carolina: "I was told a few years ago that a large Confederate flag dominates the main room of the Cattleman’s Club in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I don’t know if this was true or is still true, but there is a reason that Owen Wister called his cowboy hero The Virginian. Without the cultural transmission of Southern chivalry to the West, a cowboy is just a proletarian who herds animals rather than a knight of the plains." --Dr. Clyde Wilson

The code was likely common sense rules where there were no laws, safety nets, formal education, or established protocols existing to guide peoples. In a violent, harsh, and dangerous environment one would try to fit in, keep the peace, get along, be responsible and take care of yourself, mind your own business, keep your business private, show respect for yourself and others. Being aware of danger and risks and acting accordingly. Maintaining your personal reputation was import. Creating offenses, being a loner, being reckless, foolish, selfish, being unprepared could be disasterous. Knowing what to do or not to do was critical. Your life literally could depend upon it. It probably comprised survival, social and practical skills to function on one's own or in groups. "Life's hard, pardner. It's harder if you're stupid."

It makes me think I was actually raised by the Huns. When at peace be ready for war and when at war get ready for more war and show no mercy to your enemies. Just a little FYI my families heritage comes from Hungary, Ukraine, Romania and Albania which if I recall was the homeland of the Huns. Although the Huns were not always brutes and they did show mercy and welcomed people to the tribe but what I'm trying to say is the code of the West is kinda like chivalry and the rules of civility. Show no mercy to your enemy but be respectful to the weak. Of course the Huns do get their reputation for being brutes.

Huh. Listening to an audiobook of _The Virginian_ by Owen Wister. Several oblique references to there being a Code, and one direct, on the subject of a man not interfering with a transaction. That's a 1902 reference.

I thought it was "The Law of the West"....kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5PEeZlpqNScr7M Really, the code was pretty much the Ten Commandments, boiled down to its bare bones. Mostly, it was all about respect, which we see little of today. Believe in God - respect there's something a lot bigger n you, and He's watchin' No cussin' - respect yerr own words cause they's comin' out yer own mouth Honor your Ma and Pa and folks in general - respect for old folks, women, little kids and yourself Don't kill unless you gotta - respect Life No hanky pankyin' around - respect your Pardner. You picked 'em and they picked you No stealin' other folks' stuff - respect for other folks' hard work ta git what they got No lyin' - respect the truth No wantin' hard for others' stuff - respect what ya already got. It's alright to work fer more, but don't let it rule ya The code was knowin' if you wanted to be treated fair, you had to walk the straight and narrow path to earn respect, and to do that, you had to show respect. Same as today, but somehow we don't seem ta make bein' good and honest an important thing like we used ta. Seems to me that's why we see so many folks running roughshod over everbody else. PC has led us to let yahoos run wild, and that's a lowdown dirty shame! Who pays for it in the end? We all do!

The Constitution and Bill of Rights sums up life lived by the code of the West. The very basic tenants were a skeleton of everyones interpretation of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Everyone essentially had a mutual respect for each other, their property, loved ones, family, and other aquaintences. Even when they didn't get along and had very different thoughts of each other, they still respected each other as humans with qualities not much different from theirselves. They cherished life and all that it had to offer, times were very hard for everyone back then; so by circumstances they were really forced to cooperate with each other to make the best of what was accessible to them. Realizing that they had little to live with; they made do the best they could. Not too different from how people lived in the time of Jesus Christ. For example: walking 15 miles to a well with 3 others to get the days supply of water in clay pots. Being honorable was of great significance as it was a sign to others that, that person could be relied upon to help others when times were tough, attacked by outsiders, was sick, etc. Those that were respectful, and honorable, and were willing to find independence from human policies, regulations, etc., to live life to the fullest were of great value to many! Those were the ranch hands, doctors, miners, and others that made a town a happy and prosperous place to live. Not all, only some of them were like the good Samaritan that helped the man that was beat up along the side of a road, that Jesus Christ talked about. There could never truely be a written "code of the West" it is something best represented by the U.S. Constitution, but based upon high moral standards, which people either had it in them, or they didn't. I think educating children of the wild west and its code of conduct, helps to establish some really good moral values at an early age. Rodeo week should always be celebrated.
