It is far too easy to talk past each other because we caricature those we disagree with rather than seek to fully understand a different position. If you look at the chapter names (the words or phrases next to the video length) for this video, it's a good overview for how Joshua describes every church in these "explaining denominations" videos: History (of the denomination), core doctrines, sacraments (if any), scripture (including which, if any, books of the Apocrypha are accepted and how infallible the Bible is considered), creation & evolution (mostly concerned with whether evolution can be accepted by believers), original sin, salvation (where it comes from), Arminianism (namely, is it true that, "once saved, always saved"?), sanctification (is it acceptable, or even required?), spiritual gifts (are they available to modern believers? do believers speak in tongues?), end times (pre-, post-. or a-millennial?), marriage & family (is homosexuality or extramarital sex acceptable?), divorce & remarriage (acceptable or not?), abortion (always a sin, or okay in at least some circumstances?), worship style (high or low church?), alcohol (acceptable in moderation, or not?), tithing & giving (required, or at least encouraged?), the church (what is its nature? is there only "one true church"? can churches of other denominations be cooperated with?), church government (episcopal, presbyterian, or congregationalist?), and statistics (how many members and churches? where?).

The part of the country I'm from is overwhelmingly Methodist, but I've never heard of this denomination before. There are no Congregational (or UCC) churches whatsoever in my part of the country. Then I started seeing TV commercials for a "Congregational Church" about fifty miles from me. I looked at their website, and it said they were Wesleyan in their theology. I still haven't figured out who they are, but they are not part of the Congregational Methodist Church. Their website calls them a "Congregational Missionary Church." If that's the name of a denomination, I'm unable to locate it on the internet.

As a member of the Independent Christian churches I was surprised to see how much in common we have with this Methodist group. I was wondering if there are any other groups out there (aside from restorationist churches) that believe in believers baptism ( in exclusion of infant baptism) as a sacramental means of grace. I've heard rumors of a Scottish Baptist group that held this view but have been unable to track them down.

I still don't understand how Christianity came to be "salvation through faith alone." If salvation is granted simply by way of faith what is the purpose of Judgement Day?
@kmc65062 ай бұрын
Judgment day isn't for God to "decide" our fate. God is all knowing and could sort all that out in an instant. Rather, my understanding is, that Judgment Day is to demonstrate to the rest of the universe the reasons why people end up where they do. Also, I believe there are different degrees of reward in Heaven and different degrees of punishment in Hell. Maybe Judgment Day will be to assign each person to the degree of reward or punishment they have coming to them. I'm not a Bible expert or a theologian, so do your own research.

Schism is a sin in itself. The Spirit's desire is filial unity. All denominations that went into schism in order to collude with slavery or segregation are in need of repentance, as some already have. Creating schism in order to reject the Wesleyan principle of episcopal discipline is another decision in need of repentance. No need to go backward in time, but the first step to real recovery is to admit one has had a problem.
@jimthompson58442 ай бұрын
False and false. Was it a sin for the Christian’s to schism from the synagogues? Was it a sin for the East and west to split? Further your editorializing and preaching of the social gospel where you wrongfully condemn slavery which the gospel never does is entirely unneeded. Calling people to a false repentance is wicked.

@@jimthompson5844 The early Jewish believers continued to attend the synagogues, and then their own gatherings on the first day, until they were expelled from the synagogues toward the end of the first century. Enmity, strife, dissensions, divisions are part of the works of the flesh described in Paul's letter to the Galatians, chapter 5. As for slavery, the Spirit informs us that all are equal in Christ, there is neither 'slave nor free', no matter what conditions exist in this age. The early Christians were not social reformers, but they were called to show brotherly love and create a better community with each other. And if a denomination is going to claim descent from Wesley, then it should recognize the anti-slavery impulse arising from those theological roots, as well as commitment to episcopal polity.
