I don't if cyclists are always grumpy, but GCN viewers certantly are. I think it is nice to repeat content in new videos. Every day new people come into cycling and new videos are a good way to reach this new cyclists. It is how youtube works. Maybe old viewers are grumpy because they are warching more CGN than riding? 🤔

I have a 2008 Rocky Mountain Solo CX. It was an affordable but well made and light aluminium cross bike geared more toward recreational use. It will house tyres wider than 33 mm (35 fits nicely) and can take disc brakes. With those, it is a very versatile bike. It's only on very loose surface that it tends to dig in the front wheel because the geometry. It's almost the do-anything bike.

CX. I like the tradition, and focus of them. Though I mainly use mine for winter training and off road trails that I'm sure a gravel bike would do marginally better on and be more comfy for. I also ride a MTB, often on the same trails, and it's fun seeing how each copes with different aspects of the routes. I also ride a pure road bike, and it's equally fun comparing my road rides on the CX with it. It's all about the fun, whatever and wherever you ride 8) 20yr old steel road. 4 yr old ally FS MTB. 2 yr old carbon CX. You might get gear ratios that are more high speed focused. Modern cx bikes have chainrings that are 46 x 30 or 46 x 36. Road bikes typically have 50 x 34. Of course you can change your cyclocross bike chainrings to a road specific setup. My trusty old 2007 Focus Mares Cross came from the factory with a very road style 50 x 34 / 11-32.

The Canyon CF Gail and Inflite has same wheelbase and headtube angle - to make it clear is difficult it you do not invest enough time in the preb. Face. 😉 Before making the video and conclute. All the video on youtube are gooing around the old terms for cross bikes, but time the changes my friend - head tube angle is much more slack to day on a modern cross bike as 3-4 years ago. Canyon has a very good video from the design face on the Inflite, where they haved looked across the the MTB riding style. Cross bike is normally not made for bikebacking, but riding gravel with out bags can be done on both bikes, most modern cross bike can run up to 40mm tires who is enough for this type of riding. I you will analyzed deeper you have to look deep on each bike frame geometry for each bike. Center of gravety might be the biggest different as BB is sitting higher on a crossbike

Question: how should I fit a crisscross or gravel bike compared to a road bike? Thinking about top tube length/ stem length/ saddle position/ stack/ reach and how they differ between the two.
@VIEultimate
@VIEultimate 2 жыл бұрын
Quite a late reply, and I might not be the best person to answer this, but this is my guess from reading/watching: Your position in the two off-road drop bar bikes will be more upright than the roadie. That should generally mean shorter TT (and/or stem, depending on what you're comparing it to) and therefore shorter reach; slightly higher stack. Saddle position might be depending on the geometry of the bike you're comparing them two and the specific bike you're getting. Now, between CX and Gr, Gr will be the more relaxed one in geometry (because CX bike will still be more race-oriented). So maybe slightly higher stack, shorter reach. Hope this helps

I always heard cx bikes where build for more extreme terrain, but it seems like this video is saying the opposite, what's true now? Edit, after buying my first and also second bike one being more off a cx and the newer one more of a grv bike, over the last 3 years and riding them for thousands upon thousands of kilometers all thru Europe and getting really deep and nerdy about grv bikes, I can now say. CX bikes are made for mud and for short course racing only, the biggest difference is that grv bikes are often more endurance racing based and made for longer distances. A gravelbike is also more capable most of the time. The existance of modern cx bikes wich look different then grv bikes is mainly caused by cx regulations by thw uci. So if you don't want to race in uci samctioned event, you shouldn't get a cx bike. A sporty grv will do the same and more

But for road use how would a CX bike compare to an endurance bike? I'm guessing the steering geometry and wheelbase would be pretty similar. I know last endurance bike had a 430mm chain stay which verging on touring and gravel bike territory.

#askgcntech tell bit more about flared handlebars and how they compare with traditional, when we speak about gravel. Yet, are flared ones allowed in cx races by uci, or is it just for exploration and control?

I have a CX bike. I’m running 38s for gravel riding and could probably run a 42. Maybe I could go with a wider gear range, but I can slog up some 18% grades and more, in the mud and much, with a 30 on the back. Don’t see a need for both.

CX closes the gap between the MTB and the Road Bike very well - I don't get why there is any need for a Gravel Bike in between, when the 29'' HT does the job better than the Gravel Bike, while having even more variance on where you can ride.

So... gravel closer to traditional touring bikes than cx. Modern, tighter versions of Dawes Galaxy and Super-Galaxy with Audax elements. Wish I was a retired dentist with a big shed near lots of off-road to afford many bikes. Tbf, an ideal one-bike portfolio looks like aluminium gravel frame with Claris, several pairs of wheels and tyres for town bashing, road rides, and bridleways, mudguards and racks easy to remove. Similar to the first generation Tricross I gave away in first lockdown

First they had flat bars (mostly) and were called MTB (old rigid ones), after the industry created modern MTBs, they rebranded the old ones as “trekking bikes” (with suspension fork), few years later as “fitness bikes” (without suspension fork) and now as “gravel bikes” (with a road handle bar)

Cx, because I have long arms and I'm not too tall. Gravel bike has longer head tube, also top tube is often longer than on cx bike. Therefore more difficult to fit for non standard body size, or short person.. Well that is what I think, but I'm sure not all gavel bikes have same geometry and cx also differ beteween brands and models. But I think a cx bike that has places to mount mudguards and water bottles etc. Would be better.

Is there a way to convert a thru axel wheel to a quick release one? I have a quick release bike and my mate is planning to sell me his wheelset for a way cheaper price, but it's a thru axel. Could i somehow convert the axel to be a quick release one? #askgcn
@fennec13
@fennec13 3 жыл бұрын
there are quick-release adapters that work on thru axle wheels. Search ebay, amazon or any bike outlet for "Bicycle Thru Axle To quick release (QR) Adapter" You will need to know the how thick the axle is supposed to be for the wheels ( i.e. the diameter of the axle is 12mm, 15mm,, etc.) and how wide is the axle. Most bikes have a 100mm front axle and a 135mm rear axle - but mountain bikes have wider hubs. So be sure to get some information. Your friend should know the specs on the wheelset: Axle size is key, then you can see if those wheels will work for you - and look for Thru axle to QR adapters. they aren't hard to find or expensive, but you need to know what you are looking for. Good luck.

Pretty good video but I don’t agree with your version of the birth of dedicated gravel bikes. I’d argue that while cross racers were probably looking for more summer fun, the true origin is more about gravel riders and bike companies realizing that neither road or cross bikes were ideal for gravel riding and racing.
