What is The Difference Between a RV Workhorse Chassis W22 & W24
Some High Lights
Dana Differential Info:
2004 W24 w/ 235/80R22.5 used Dana S130 w/ 5.86 ratio With 16,000 lb Load Capacity
2004 W22 w/ 235/80R22.5 used Dana S150 w/ 5.38 ratio With 15,500 lb Load Capacity
2004 W20 w/ 245/70R19.5 used Dana S150 w/ 4.78 ratio With 14,500 lb Load Capacity
Note in starting in 2006 W22 started showing up with Dana S130
Allison Transmission W22 = Allison 1000 W24 = Allison 2100MH
Note in 2008 the W24 went to the Allison 2350 with parking pawl eliminating the J72 Auto Brake
Brakes W22 = used 66mm Bosh 2 Piston Calipers
Brakes W24 = used 70mm Meritor Quadraulic 4 Piston Calipers

Kevin, your curiosity has no limits. Having a W22 Workhorse chassis in the shop and going through an emergency break tune up, for you to take your time and show us differences is priceless. Thanks a lot. I feel a bit smarter 😉.

Great info Kevin ! My '04 W22 Workhorse 33v Itasca has the Dana S110, can't recall exactly how many qts it took when I serviced it off the top of my head. And, yep mine had the recall on calipers done before I bought it. And yes, the Allison 1000MH trans. Thx as Always for sharing you're priceless info !!!

I had no luck with my j72 on my RV. So I installed a parking pawl in the trans, 4l85 works great.

Learning a lot from your videos. Although mine is a 2004 W22 Monaco much like this one. I haven’t seen a video on an air filter replacement which I understand is a pain of a job

Thank You Kevin, Your videos are outstanding reference for RV owners. Your Attention to detail and proactive nature is amazing. I own a 2006 Kodiak 5500 8.1 Vortech Super C RV. I have tried to match some of your workhorse chassis videos to my chassis and come up with variations that make me question if my chassis is in fact a Workhorse chassis. Did Chevy use a Workhorse or their own chassis for Kodiak RV's.. Thanks for any feedback you can offer? Steve

Big rear-end hold lots more oil. I think they just got a deal on them It took forever to put all the resend greas in it. Ours is the Winne 2004 35J Adventure I think it has 4 wheel disc breaks

Hi Kevin. Question for you. Did both the W22 &W24 have the grade brake? My W22 (2005) has it on the MH1000.

Hi Dan! All of the W-series RV's from model year 2005+ were equipped with the GradeBrake feature. Ultra RV offers a "retro-fit" to add the GradeBrake to the 2001-2004 model years.

I would think the different transmissions have a different final ratio too. The allison 1000 is usually a six speed while the 2100 is most likely a five speed. Anyone confirm?

Nice job I have a W22 Workhorse I need to change the front inner wheel seals right and left wheel I was trying to see which seals you used or think I should replace them with?? Thanks

Hey Kevin, my stepdad’s 2008 W22 doesn’t have that connector for the brake master cylinder. I’m wondering if they fixed that issue that has the ABS light on?

Looks like they removed they switch in later models just so we would not get the light just encase the front and rear brakes lines had a momentary in-balance.

I have a dana 150 with a leaky axle shaft and pinion. Do you have videos for those repairs? I cannot find a local mechanic who wants to work on my bus. Liability issues. I'm converting it to an RV.

WOW big differences between them. I seriously hope I have a w24 chassis! Just the transmission difference is heavy. The 1000 is a light duty truck trans while the 2100MH was designed for motorhomes. It's a bit beefier.

Ok I have a w24. Easiest way to know is the GVWR. Mine is 24k lbs hence W24. LOL seems so idioticly simple now.

@@bounderchris Ok let's chat about that. Not saying you're wrong. I could be way off base due to clutch material types etc. They are different in casing and bell housing due to the PTO and the need for a smaller footprint. However, spec for spec, they're exactly the same. Gear ratios and the valve body are the same. They're pretty much the same. The only major difference I can find is the MH came with both a high and shallow capacity oil pan. Maybe there are more heavy duty planetaries and bands? Do you happen to know?

@@llspragulusI am not sure but I do know that GM makes the 1000 themselves but the 1000mh is made by Allison and the drain interval is longer on the mh… I’m not sure what else is different though.

I called Dana they told me the S130 may look smaller in size but with thicker walls in the tubing it can support more weight than the Dane S150

@@ktoutdoor hmmm interesting. I wonder why the cut back in fluid too. Are the ring gears the same size in both? Oh it’s a 14.38 in the 135/150 and a 12.2 in the 130.

The big drum on the back of the Allison trans in a W22 is the parking brake. It's not the park mechanism that is internal to the trans. The weight of the W24 chassis exceedes the weight limit of the mh2100 trans so they added the troublesome auto park lock system.
