A police department has no authority within local courts or jails. The county Sheriff’s Department handles all things that include inmates and inmate transportation, and jail security. The individuals who are arrested by local PD are transferred to the Sheriff’s Department for actual custody and detention as far as I’m aware.

@@travisprather678 I think it also depends on the state or locations. Yes Sheriffs handle courts and jails but I feel they also enforce bigger crimes, where as police handle petty shit, homicides and traffic stops. I live in Southern California and seems like every time there is a huge drug house bust or drug smuggler bust it is the Sheriff's who make the arrest.

In the community where I live the city I live in has outsourced the police department to the county Sheriff but the county Sheriff is not the police department for all the cities in the county. I did see a situation once where the city, county, and state all showed up. I'm not sure who took charge of that one.

Yes Sheriff is an elected official in Rural areas of US, while the Police Department is for City only means they're assigned by Local or National Government in Cities not outside

And the Sheriff is chosen by the people every 4 years I believe. He patrols the county including the cities, which are also patrolled by police.

Not necessarily. Rural towns also have PD not just deputies. Also, places like LA have a Sheriff’s Department that practically spans the city since it’s the majority of the county, so LASF and LAPD patrol a lot of the same areas
