I differ little with your explanation of resultant speed through water, if there is speed through water but speed over ground is zero, it is making way. e.g - STW-3 knots, Current - 3 knots against, SOG = 0 but it will be considered making way
@vivekchauhan8884 жыл бұрын
if there is a speed through water, it should be making way through water... SOG doesn't count here.
@capt.ajaykumar39534 жыл бұрын
@@vivekchauhan888 Yes, that's correct but the vessel should be underway also. eg. if vessel is at anchor and have 2 knots speed through water, it cannot be a case of making way

First case- making way Second - underway Second case is subject to rule 3
@yugeshh3 жыл бұрын
@@tusharcolz9803 you're right. The second example is exactly like explained in video when going against current. A speed of 3 knots against current of 3 knots will give: STW = more than 0 SOG = 0

Sir, what will be Underway probably making way means ? Plz reply
@CptDangernoodle4 жыл бұрын
I thought STW is unaffected by current, and SOG is the one that takes it into account. So in your first example, ship speed 3kts with 3kts current against it --> STW is actually 3kts and SOG is zero. So I'd imagine the determining factor for Making Way is SOG not STW. But I'm just a cadet, I might understand this wrong.
@dimaz34 жыл бұрын
It is always against STW to check if a ship is making way. Making way means a ship is cutting the water , it doesn't necessarily has to move in relation to the ground. If a ship is going forward 3kt and counter current of 3kt is acting then it's still cutting the water , will respond to helm and show STW so it's making way through water even though it's NOT making way over ground.
@charleslyster1681 Жыл бұрын
@@dimaz3but this is the opposite of what he says in the video. He contradicts himself; first he says the vessel is making way if it is moving through the water but then in the river example he says if SOG is zero it is not making way even though it is making 3kts through the water.
@dimaz3 Жыл бұрын
@@charleslyster1681 Damn..coming back to a 3 year old comment haha. Anyway I have had a lot of discussion about this with plenty people , plenty captains and you know there is no exact definition of this in ROR , which leaves confusion for interpretation. I will just paste what I try to interpret as from a book I followed and felt correct : The best interpretation of this term 'making way' would mean a physical movement of the vessel through water, or the vessel must have some relative speed through the water because of the use of her own propulsion, or having stopped the propulsion, then because of her own momentum, but not any movement through the water caused due to wind or movement over ground due to wind and/or current. In short , I disagree with his first statement as the ship is using her own propulsion and still have a stw.

Sir, Can u plz answer to my question ?? Sorry sir but I'm little bit confused here, you said, a ship is to be known "making way" if it is registering 'STW' but in your second example, u said that if ship's engine is stopped and ship still moves due to external factors is known to be "making way". My doubt is, if ship's engine is stopped then how it could register "STW"?? It would be "SOG" in my opinion!! Plz correct sir if I'm wrong.
@tusharcolz98034 жыл бұрын
Stw is in relation to water means a ship at anchor with current will register stw=current and sog=0. Basically sog is the factor which determines whether ship is making way or underway.

If the ships engine is off we r not putting any further command on vessel so it is vessel making way

Ranavikas..2 criteria define the vessel making way or not...1 ) Is the ship cutting through the water 2 ) can the vessels rudder be used effectively...both these criteria have to be fulfilled for a vessel to be making way through water...and yes sir somehow got the 2nd explaination confused..even though the speed over ground is zero,yet the vessel is making way through the water cos it fulfills both the criteria above...hope it helps u..btw Sirs other vdos are really amazing and we'll elaborated .
