England and Germany both are in Europe, then why do they have different standards. Why not just a single standard as European Standard?

Most standards were develop during industrial revolution and during and after World War -1 and 2. So Germany is always different from UK. This is my thought on this.

Mech E the British and German standards are older. The unified, European standard is what is generally used in both countries.
