My husband saw kids throwing stones at a black bird that wouldn’t fly away. Afraid he rescued him, he realized it was a young raven that couldn’t fly. He brought him home, made him a cage and we named him Edgar. When running around the back yard flapping his arms didn’t teach Edgar to fly, he put Edgar on the bottom drawer and his food on the floor. Edgar learned to glide down to his food by starting at the lowest drawer and moving higher. Once he learned to fly, we would let him out of his cage. He would eat with the horses. Watermelon rind was his favorite. He would also fly up to the overhead wires and sit there with his crow friends. He was the big bird in the middle with the crows around him. One day there was a terrible storm like you can only have in Southern CA. We were both at work and couldn’t get home to get him. He disappeared. We missed him a lot. One day the Santa Ana winds started to blow. And there was Edgar sitting back in the wire surrounded by his crow friends.

Indeed! I saved a fledgling crow who was standing guard over his dead mother in the center of a 4-lane street diring rush hour back in the late 90s. We fed him &cared for him and he would daily walk up the some f our back yard and take short flights. Oe day while we were gone he disappeared altogether. However, every year at about the same time he would return and spend a few days around our house, perchedcloseby & looking at us while caring at us. We would feed him and rejoice at this wonder of human-crow interaction!

Up in the mountains of Colorado, in the town of Fairplay, ravens are abundant. It’s windy in Fairplay, and the ravens love to surf the wind like humans surfing waves. It seems to me that the ravens are having fun, enjoying the challenge. They do barrel rolls, crazy dives and swoops. When the ravens get tired of playing, they hit the dumpsters of restaurants. Not unlike us humans, a tasty meal after a great day at the beach.

On the northern U.S. border, I watched a handful of Common Ravens playing in the stiff wind of one winter day. Temps were hovering around -25°f. Dives, hovering, swooping around each other, touching feet, barrel rolls... it went on for quite a while. I finally had to get back to work but they were still playing. Then one summer day while crossing a big, empty parking lot I heard a Raven talking to itself. It was just walking around by itself there, muttering the most remarkable sounds - vocalizations, clicks, whistling, cackling, and croaks and gurgles. Fantastic birds. Ravens In Winter is a great book, published back in 1989, for anyone really interested. It's got a lot of interesting info on biology and behavior.

Many years ago, when we were stationed in Germany, we lived out in the neighborhood around the military base, and an old German farmer used to plow the field in front of our apartment using a team of draft horses. My hubby had the car, and I needed to get some groceries, so I loaded the children up in the pram, and proceeded down the path through the field to reach the commissary, a frequently used shortcut. Leaving my apartment, I noted that the farmer's field was absolutely coated solid with ravens, evidently eating whatever he'd planted there. As we stepped onto the walking path, every raven stopped what it was doing, and turned to stare at me and the children. They followed me with their eyes, and stayed silent, until I finally stepped off the path onto the paved road next to the commissary. I don't mind telling you, the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds" flashed through my head as I struggled to remain calm, LOL, it was quite unnerving.

Hmmm. I heard (admittedly many years ago) that the raven is the largest song bird, and that one of it's calls is a knocking - I heard this call myself. Which gives Edgar Allen Poe's raven an additional way to knock at the chamber door. A thing about crows (though I wouldn't be surprised if ravens do this too) is that they remember people who are good to them, and especially people who are bad to them. If you shoot or throw stones at crows, they will remember you and harass you.

My local ravens have been very friendly. In fact they wait for us to feed our chickens food scraps they fly to our chicken enclosure and strut around with the chickens in the exact way they do and feast with the chickens. We once had a bobcat on our property. The ravens came out in full force swooping it and screeching. We ran to find the bobcat scampering off. Once our sheep pushed their way under the fence and they came to my window squawking to get my attention. Sure enough the sheep had almost made it out to the road. They're my friends but still afraid of me. They let me look at them through my window but not get too close. When I was in the garden working they sat on the power line and they called me mom exactly in the same singsong voice as my children. I looked up at him and he flew away. We nick named them Benedict and Scholastica both Catholic saints who had ravens and when Scholastica died Benedict knew because he saw her fly to heaven in the shape of a raven.

You have a hunting partner! I'm guessing you field dress the birds you shoot--those ravens know you'll leave them an easy snack, and are more than happy to help you any way they can! Be kind to them; interspecies hunting is a magical thing. There is another species of bird in Africa (it may be a type of Corvid?) that will lead "hunters" to wild beehives filled with honey, for similar reasons. They make a specific whistle to alert their human partners, fly off in the direction, and repeat the process until they've reached their goal together.

I grew up in a very small town in the eastern Oregon desert. When I was about ten years old my older brother came home with a young Raven. My mother loved animals and we had plenty of them and the Raven was welcomed into the family. We named him Edgar and kept him in a cage and fed him raw liver for a few days and then we let him lose. He was free flying after that and flew all over town but came back to our backyard to tell my mother he wanted more liver and she always obliged. He was full of personality. He loved being in our backyard when if was full of kids playing and having fun. He loved that vibe. I'll never forget the time when the kids were all playing and I looked up and saw him sitting on a tree branch, looking down at the festivities and laughing. There is nothing like a Raven laughing. He was obviously loving what he was seeing. I've thought about that moment my whole life. I was just a kid and didn't realize it at the time but as an adult I later realized that I was the one that he bonded with. I remember a game that we played. I would be sitting down and he would be standing on my knee and he would swallow one of my fingers and gobble it down his bill as far as he could and then he would sit there with my finger in his mouth and look into my eyes while I just sat there staring into his. I was trusting him to not hurt me and he was doing the same because if I had reacted and violently pulled my finger out of his mouth I could have easily harmed him. So we just sat there staring into each others eyes trusting each other and bonding. I saw a video on youtube a while back of a man who had a Raven and this raven also gobbled the mans finger and he held it while the man put his arm down to his side and walked with the Raven hanging from his finger. Apparently this is a little known 'thing' that Ravens do.

From the backyard, Edgar knew the moment my mother turned towards the refrigerator to get some raw liver for him. He would be outside getting excited and making lots of noise and jumping around several minutes before the back door opened and my mother appeared with his liver. I'm convinced that Ravens are connected to the supernatural world and he knew exactly what was going on in our kitchen. Ravens are prone to mischief. This is because they are very intelligent and need mental stimulus to avoid boredom. He was all over town and I'll never know everything he was up to but over time we heard about some of his activities. He loved to swoop down and take hats off of people's heads and he did that all over town. Unfortunately our little blonde frizzy haired neighbor girl became a favorite target because apparently her hair looked like a hat to Edgar. I saw her running down the alley towards her house screaming and waving her hands in the air fending him off quite a few times. He loved to pull lose shingles off of roofs and drop them into the flower bed. He did this to our next door neighbors old house and I suspect he did the same thing all over town. He loved to go to the truckstop a couple of blocks from our home and he would strut back and forth on the outside ledge watching customers eat their pie. He was very popular there. But he wasn't popular at the nursing home. Ravens have an instinct for death, and Edgar knew which patient was on the verge of death and would perch on their windowsill and stare at them. Not good.

Yeah. Corvids are so cool and unique in their intelligence. If you KNOW about corvids, upu know it would be AWESOME to make friends with them. One older lady had some corvids she made friends with at her house. One day, her neighbors heard an unnatural ruckus with the flock. They know they hang around the neighborhood......but this was different. They were cawing and all sorts of stuff near her back yard. They went back there to see what was going on and that's when they had found that she fell and couldn't get up. They saved her life that day. One guy I saw in an Instagram reel found and nursed a little corvid back to health. Let's just say it was so greatful and stayed with him to where the video ends with the bird bringing him a gift of someone's money. Corvids are cool as heck. They don't deserve spooky music. They deserve to be recognized for the intelligent goofy jackasses that they are. They're the only "prey" animal that will harass raptors just cause they VERY LEGITIMATELY find it funny.

That is not even expensive, 20, 30 grams of meat is financable, The only nasty thing is when you have to turn a kg-clump of minced meat into hundreds of small balls, by hand, and they must all be frozen individually before coming into the box. Then you can grab them easily out of the fridge.

Crows and ravens are smart and very interesting social birds. I find these creatures fascinating. I don't understand why anyone would be afraid of them. When you consider the fact that they can say words just like a parrot can. I see them as nothing but very intelligent opportunistic parrots with not so curved beaks and Jet Black Panthers legs and overall appearance.

While working in Prudhoe Bay, on the North Slope of Alaska, with a wind chill of 70 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, I saw dozens of Ravens. These are huge birds ! We called them "Coal Tar Turkeys". I could never figure out what they ate, where the found water to drink, and how they survived the cold. The sea was frozen to a depth of 8 feet. At the temperature, it is very difficult to breathe. You should look into the Inuit Indians "the Eagle & the Raven". They play a large part of their cultural identity and especially their beautiful artwork.

The Inuit's tube-like face opening in their coats probably helps with the breathing, even though they're rebreathing their own CO2 laden breath. I grew up in Minnesota. That was way too cold and dark for me. I moved south as soon as I became an adult. Florida felt like I was violating a law of nature; warm and sunny all year long! I seriously can't understand people who live in the cold and dark. I respect them though! I've since compromised and loving the Virginia hills....and Crows and Ravens live right next to me! I get to hear their beautiful calls every day!

Our Ravens are either solitary or out and about with their mate. The only places I've seen Ravens congregate in large numbers is Yellowstone and other large parks. No mention of Ravens flying inverted I don’t know if Crows do that or not. One summer when I was driving a big Truck daily, there was one particular Raven that would fly along for a stretch going around Kaweah (Kaweah is a Yokut word meaning Raven) Lake and would invert a couple times while doing it. Did it pretty much every day for much of the summer. No idea why, but appeared to be having fun. We live just outside Sequoia National Park and have a pair of ravens that visits every day. I’ve never seen a Crow that I’m aware of East of Terminus Dam/Kaweah Lake. But there are large numbers of them west of the foothills.

In Arizona and New Mexico, lots of ravens. I love the ravens ... and the crows. The ravens love to come out and play on the wind as a storm is blowing in. The ravens and hawks hunt the same areas and fly in a similar way, but of course the ravens are black and the hawks are brown, which is the quickest way to tell them apart from a distance. We have crows, too, but I think a lot more ravens. Once I was working outside, and a crow was flying around the area. Suddenly he swooped a little lower and pooped on my head as he went by. I don't think that was an accident! Once I was driving on a residential road and saw a crow sitting in the middle of the road, not flying away as my truck approached. I stopped and got out, picked him up and took him home. He was very calm. After awhile of perching on my shoulder, he flew off. Maybe it was somebody's pet ... or maybe just because they're so smart.

When I went camping they would always wake me up very early hover above pine trees waiting for scraps when cooking on a campfire. So the next time I went camping I went to the local feed store or hardware store that sold bags of corn and sunflower seeds and a bag of bird feed. I waited till they would wake me up and before I started my breakfast I threw some of those that I bought and they didn't waste time swooping down to get what they could. After everything was gone they made that call and it was as if they were saying thank you and flew off. I started my breakfast and threw scraps down but I guess they were full. I started to miss them and the calls after they flew, but the next time I look forward to seeing them again. Hope they are doing well.

Very cool and informative. Two issues: notice in the scene at 2:12, none of the birds are flapping their wings at all - these are turkey vultures, not crows. The shape is very distinctive. Again, at 9:40 we are looking at gulls, not ravens.

So, you have to get through most of this video before it answers the title question about what is the difference between crows and ravens (starting after time stamp 9:00 minutes.)

Sad that this never mentioned that Crows and Ravens can mimic speech and sounds. There's an island in Canada, Prince Albert Island or something close like that, where all the Crows on the island can say "Hello!"! Scientists believe that one bird had befriended a male hooman and he always said "Hello" to the Crow and would give it food, especially once it learned to mimic back to the hooman. That Crow then went around "teaching" the other Crows a new way to get snacks. Very intelligent birds! Whispers behind me hand: I still love Ravens more though, js. 🐦‍⬛🖤

"Adding ravens to a cemetery, is a popular trick among directors, of cheap horror flicks". What about the top-notch directors, of top-notch, horror films🤔??? "Irish, and wealth mythology"??? Could you possibly mean; 'Welsh'??? Besides that; this was a very informative documentary, on said differences👍☺️!!!

Here in Mexico we don´t have a word for raven. We would call them "Cuervo" that is the same word we use for crows, however, we have smaller birds also corvids from the genus Pica spp. that have a black to brown-ish color we call "Urracas", where there´s no common name for that bird in english (not that i know of) and that is because they are not so present in North America. For example in the northern states of Mexico the chipmunks are called "chichimokos" which is a vague english version of that word.

Hawks are the ones I don't like just because the only reason they don't try to eat me alive is because I'm 10x too big.

Good video! I'm watching this and thinking about my poor son's cockatiel. At about age 4, the cockatiel decided he (probably) didn't like me. He spent much of his time perched on top of his cage. On an infrequent basis, he'd fly outside. Generally, he'd land right outside the door and we'd pick him up and bring him inside. This one time, my son came in and left the slider open. I came in right after. The cockatiel saw me, screeched, and flew at me. He then flew outside and landed on the roof of our next door neighbor. next thing I saw was a crow grabbing the cockatiel and tearing him apart. My son - 8 years old at the time - was very upset.

I always have a fascination for crows and ravens due to the mystical ideas surrounding them. When I went to Hokkaido they were everywhere. They were large, and they will perch on the telephone wires. Man-- when they take a dump, better not stand underneath them. It’s watery and it hits the ground like someone emptied out a bucket! Magnificent animals though.

Growing up in southern Wisconsin many local corn farmers used to pay a $1/crow bounty for every crow you shot/killed on their farm. Earned some good money while a teenager.
