Quickest tippet for really small water light tippet small trout.."the infinity knot" if going bigger trout the "double surgeons knot "is fine,, but the orvis knot is better if using top or bottom tag end for dropper off either end of the "orvis knot" only should use the lower tag end of the "double surgeon knot" tag end because the top tag will break.. anyway so I read and guess it must be true! .. one knot tippet favored is the orvis knot , likely is best for tandem off either tag end .. upper preferred and only three to four inches off say typical 12 to 18 inch apart tandem.. some say double tandem and another idea is the perfection loop dropper ( say six inches and Davey 'penny which ever knot to the hook eye .. keep the perfect loop small and length in whole 6 or better under 5 inches can offer an adjustable using such pre-ties ( micro loop perfection loop to leader can slide and offer a bit of depth change versatility above the first tippet knot too.. can slide up or down using a floater over a sinker.. for really saving tag end changes,, nothing better than a Davey knot.

do you always tie on tippet to a dry fly? or do people tie on tippet directly to the leader?

You can certainly tie directly onto the leader. Tippet is used to extend your leader, restore it to its original length, or to join two flies in a tandem rig.

What I don’t understand is if you tie to your leader and it breaks won’t that start to defeat the purpose of the leader? Do people tie to tippet then dry fly more tippet to dropper nymph?
