What is the Difference in the KJV and NKJV?

Let the Holy Spirit be your guide. That is my favorite part. I am a man who just put my hands on the plow just over a year ago. I have since always been partial to the NKJV over all the other modern translations and I never knew why. Then I started to do research and after a few months, I have found myself here. This was one of the best videos I have watched on the debate about translations. My spirit tells me to stick with the byzantine and Masoretic text from Antioch and Jerusalem..... the majority over the critical. Also in another video, I watched a guy named Robert Breaker, when speaking about the critical text from Alexandria, He said: "God never has anything good to say about Egypt" It made me laugh and think, could it really be that easy of a choice. I think I will go with the majority from the place where followers of Christ were first called Christians vs. the place that God made a mockery out of. So as of right now, I simply am reading my NKJV side-by-side a 1611 KJV and then bumping them up against other translations, then letting the Holy Spirit do His thing. I have a storing concordance and I am plugging away. Thank you for this video. By the way, I also capitalize He, Him, Himself, etc..... out of respect and honor to my King. Thanks again.

Great to hear I Love reading the NKJV but recently I put my NKJV down and picked up a KJV I'm reading the KJV all through out the New Testament and going to go back to reading the NKJV in the old testament. But Both a Great bible translations but I Rely of God's Spirit of Truth to reveal what is needed in God's word and to make this clearer

Robert Breaker's argument is absurd. Alexandria, Egypt was a major center of early Christianity. According to the historian Eusebius, the church of Alexandria was founded by Mark the Evangelist himself (see Ecclesiastical history book 2 chapter 16). Athanasius Bishop of Alexandria was the greatest defender of Christ's divinity at the Council of Nicaea in the 325, and Cyril of Alexandria was the most important defender of Christ's human and divine natures 100 years later when faced with the Nestorian heresy. Not to mention the Coptic church's survival in the face of Muslim persecution after the seventh century. Whether the Alexandrian text is inferior to the Byzantine text is a separate question, but it's absurd to dismiss the great Christian tradition of Egypt.

I struggled as well.. but that verse convinced me.. the KJV version to that verse is the only one that tells us WHY God created us....the other versions tell HOW.. he created us.. big difference between knowing why or how...

As a kid, I had trouble with KJV as well. I got an NIV as a teenager, and moved to an NKJV around college. Now I am back around to the KJV; even bought a 1611 version as I wanted to work out the archaic english. Took a few chapters to get used to, but once I did it stirred a hunger for the Word up in me! I think it's more aesthetically elegant than later revisions, and the chapter summaries and side-column cross references are a great aid for learning or teaching. It really feels like a book that people 400 years ago would have picked up and taught with, whether to their families or to a church body. Very special indeed.

I acquired the 1599 Geneva Bible. It is almost like a Study Bible with comments on 'every' page. I got my Dad's NIV after he died. I was reading Psalms 119 and discovered that '13' times 'word' is translated 'promise' even when Strong's says the Hebrew is not 'conclusive'. The Geneva bible does the SAME THING! I don't understand WHY the NKJV 'passed up' that 'opportunity'. To me it is similar to the 'shall not' in Exodus 20. I've read that some Jewish scholars speak of the validity of 'shall not' having a feeling of 'will not'!!!

Hi . It is not so much “ archaic” English as Biblical English . If God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts and words are expression of thought then clearly the Bible as it is if God will reflect a higher form of English it is translated into. Or to put it another way if you go to university to study in a profession it has its own language so to speak relating to that profession. The university does not or should not seek to come down to your initial level but seeks to bring you up to the level required to be competent in that profession . “ Be ye transformed by the renewal of your mind” that is by the Word of God and the Spirit of God . For as unsaved we had a carnal mind and our thinking corrupted and our perceptions blind. The Holy scriptures give us true concepts and right thinking over time about everything and we learn to do that which is right in Gods eyes not our own . And to see things as He would have us see or understand them . GB

Not to attack your religion, but it's basically a language you don't know. Unless you can read Shakespeare and get all the jokes in it (and I can't) you're reading a language with meaning and nuances you don't understand. The King James Bible has a very famous and well known error - that's "Jesus of Nazareth." This place exists NOW, but it is a recent creation. It's a mistranslation of of "Jesus the Nazarene". A Nazarene is a person that doesn't cut their hair, it's not a place. I am NOT attacking your religion, but their are errors in translation even by the most educated of scholars of the time.

Thank you very much for this presentation. I only began reading the Bible a year ago. I started with a large print KJV but soon became lost with the building of the Arc of the covenant. I purchased a NKJV in order to understand but was still baffled. I turned to an ESV which finally straightened me out on the materials of the Arc. Today I read my KJV with my NKJV close by for clarifying some of the archaic language. My ESV is on my bookshelf in case of emergency. I preferred not to do internet searches for clarification as there seems to be some issues of contention regarding versions. I'm just very grateful that I found the Bible at my old age. I started studying from NKJV. Then I studied KJV and I fell in love with how KJV was written; the flow of words and their meanings. If there are words in KJV that I am not familiar with, I check my NKJV and that has helped me understand God’s Word better. KJV has public domain and will never be changed by any publisher. I believe that this is how God has and is preserving His Word. All other translations are updated and modified, publishers profit from these modifications. KJV remains the same 😊

@@InciensoWorship I myself... have stopped using the NKJV and some years ago switched to the KJV ONLY... here is MY story... when I was a young Christian 2 of the main bibles being taught from and preached from at my church were the KJV and the NKJV.... the Pastor at that time.. went back and forth. .He liked them both...I began reading from the KJV... I liked it.. but many were saying to me the NKJV is much easier to understand.. and it says the same thing.. around 2002 -2006 I was using various NKJV bibles... then one night i was in a class regarding things that were changed in the NKJV.. I was shocked..!.. could this be true?.. I found out there were something like 225 verses or so.. that were re worded from the KJV to the NKJV.. for No reason... other than translator biases.. these verses were NOT changed.. in order to provide clarity.. but... due to the translators opinions of what the verse SHOULD say... I used to have the list... David W. Daniels...has several videos on youtube explaining the subtle changes.... I can share with you 4 or 5 off the top of my head... compare the NKJV to the KJV on these verses... Genesis 1:1 Genesis 22:8 Haggai 1:10 Acts 17:22 1 Corinthians 1:18 Revelation 4:11 ask yourself these questions when comparing... WHAT was the point of pluralizing "heaven"..Genesis 1:1 in the NKJV.. to help me to understand? why was the word "for" added immediately before the word "Himself".. in Genesis 22:8 In Haggai 1:10 the thought is "because of you".. NOT a location Acts 17:22.. in the NKJV.. was Paul really complimenting the idol worshippers by calling them "very religious"? REALLY? 1 Corinthians 1:18 I do Not know about You.. but I know I have been saved... I am Not "being saved".... lastly Revelation 4:11... if someone asked you what is your purpose here... or why God created us. .good luck reading the NKJV..to find the answer...If you want more I can list a couple hundred more unnecessary variances.....

Just a word of caution. Scolfied was an apostate Christian with a dubious understanding of God's holy word. If I were you, I would look him up and see what kind of integrity this individual had and what kind of life he lived. Besides that, I wouldn't dare to allow anyone to tell me what the bible means. I don't trust men to give me their understanding of God's word as if they knew it all. God gave us the Holy Spirit, not Scofield to teach us what His word means.

@@solitarypawn5076 thank you for the advice. Yes, I hardly read the notes. I bought 2 new Bibles for myself about 9 years ago. I seldom read from them, since I read a Bible that is in my native tongue (a kind of Dutch dialect called Afrikaans in South Africa). When the lockdown started in March I decided to read my English Bibles again. Not knowing I bought 2 Scofield Bibles. One Old Scofield KJV large print and the NKJV Scofield 2009 sentinel release. I enjoyed it so much, making notes and really living myself in it. Then I was led to the KJV just to lookup on a verse. I also looked at some KZbin videos like the ones from Pastor Scott and others regarding different translations. I'm now totally sold on the KJV as my daily Bible. However I want to get myself an Open Bible KJV since the one I use now is too big to take to church.

Thanks so much for making this video. I’ve only recently learned about the differences between the KJV+NKJV and all the other English translations, and it shocked me. As a Christian from childhood, I was brought up on the NKJV, and never had a problem with it. But I also never knew the huge distinction in origin of the other translations. I knew there were potential theological and other issues with the NIV, but that was it. I’ve been using an ESV now for many years as my pocket size reading Bible, and still have a larger NKJV as my study Bible, but recently I acquired a pocket size KJV after learning more. However, despite being English born and bred, I still find a lot of the phrasing of the KJV to be hard to satisfactorily understand, and so I wanted to know whether I could really trust the NKJV. And your calm presentation of these facts has reassured me that I can, especially as it includes those footnotes, which to me just indicates a degree of honesty in the translation. I’m going to buy myself a pocket sized NKJV to ‘replace’ my ESV and KJV, but I’ll keep all 3 and have them as optional other readings if I’m ever curious. I grow up in a church where all versions were used. Started with the niv and read many others. Then went to the nkjv bc a pastor was using it and I liked how it sounded. As the years past I was lead to the kjv and it changed my life. I also looked into the issue. But through faith and the Holy Ghost I only use the kjv in personal study but still use the new version for bible studies with friends or the church. And use my knowledge of the kjv to help my friends understand the true words of God.

I know this is an older video, but I'm starting to trip up amongst translations. I'm finding that KJV is the one I should spend some deep time with, but my issue is the archaic words. Not the 'thee, thou' etc, those are easy and wonderful. But words that we use today that mean something different than they did in the KJV, or words that are just not used anymore. The NKJV is great. It is much better than the KJV because it is easier to read although it uses the same manuscript base as the KJV. I wouldn't just listen to people's opinions though because you need to know where you are most comfortable with. The KJV is a very difficult translation because it uses a 400 English language that no one speaks anymore. You might consider that because after a while you may not want to read the bible anymore because "it is too hard to understand." Try the NIV, to begin with. After a few years, you may want to switch to a more literal translation like the NASB95, the ESV, or even the wonderful and godly NKJV. I have never read the KJV because of its archaic language and I know more about the word of God that many KJV lovers. The secret is the Holy Spirit who is the only teacher that can reveal the truth of God's word revealed in the person of Jesus Christ.

@Troy Lee Try reading it from cover to cover a few times, and then write down the words that are too archaic (There are thousand of them). You will need an Oxford Dictionary to find out what they mean. A 412 year translation speaks a language that is over 400 years old. Try the NASB and compare. ;-)

Thank you for not making this into a rant about the "bad" NKJV. And I learned a couple of things. I still prefer modern versions for reading, but I acknowledge the usefulness of consulting a version that uses thee and thou. I also want to comment that the only version that I know of that is consistent with the Greek for "Holy Place" and "Most Holy Place" in Hebrews 9 is the New American Standard.

I appreciate your comment regarding your preferences.. for bible translations..I love the KJV...even though I find myself looking up a lot of verses to fully understand what the verse is saying... I love it because I trust it.. but as one from my church told me they love it because.. all the verses they remember memorizing as a child were from the KJV... as nice as that sounds... I do not think that would be the reason for me to prefer the KJV .. as I believe scripture can be memorized over again from any any legitimate translation... one can be re programmed.. to recite from the NASB version or NKJV version... BUT... I myself..would not bother trying to re program my thinking.. in such a way.. unless I was willing to fully abandon the KJV....and only use it as a cross reference bible...I am Not there yet...

The NKJV is what was recommended to me as the little bible store as someone who had never opened one. I’m attached to it and my notes and as mine is a teaching bible it’s been indispensable in my learning of God’s word. I enjoyed this video, you did an excellent job pastor. I was 14 when I got saved back in 1985, and all I had was a KJV Bible. Although some of the language was a bit archaic, I believe the Holy Spirit just related it to my heart. I never had a problem understanding the KJV from the time I picked it up, and I was the only Christian in my house. I figure if an average freshman student and new Christian can read the KJV and understand it, then just about anyone can. :) It wasn't me, but the Holy Ghost within me that helped me to understand the WORD. @ThyMasterToo. I enjoyed your testimony. It is very similar to my own. I was raised a Catholic. We never had a Bible in the house until I saved up and purchased one at age 10. Then at 16 I fell away for about 24 years. Then I got saved and baptized the correct way. And I ve been on fire for God these last 27 years and counting. Your wirds blessed my heart. 😊. After going back and forth in my early years I settled on just the KJV. back in 2006. Though I use other bibles translations at times for cross referencing.

Hello pastor, Am Simeon Shah from New Delhi, India. I got NKJV during my teenager, then I moved to NIV. I was using NIV for the last 15yrs.. Thank you for your video Pastor Scott. I'm a long haul trucker and I have always had trouble fully understanding the language of the KJV. Don't get me wrong, I fully understanding the Gospel but still it can be very hard to understand what many verses mean. All week this week I have been listening to Matthew, Mark, John, Acts, Corinthians all using the ESV version on YouVerion app. Honestly it's made everything soooo much easier to understand . But however, now after watching 2 of your videos on ESV and NKJV it gives me a bad feeling of these versions. I don't want to have anything removed from the Bible. And I don't want to have any meanings changed to a different meaning. That would no longer be the true word of God. I guess from now forward I will only listen to the KJV as I drive. At least I know that is the True world of God without a shadow of a doubt. I do wish there was a modern easy to understand version. But it seems not. Not that isn't in some way corrupted. Personally, I find either the KJV and the NKJV as the versions I read. What I find interesting is that when those who claim only KJV as authoritative, when they teach, they'll change terms in the KJV that are outdated, they most always use the terms that have been translated in the NKJV. As with any scripture reading, first pray and ask the Holy Spirit, the author, to open my eyes and heart to understand God's word and reveal to me my sins, my weak flesh; lead me to repentance and correction that I may submit myself to the Will of the Father and walk in the Spirit and Truth that is Jesus is the Christ. Remember, both are translations of Hebrew and Greek texts and if you talk to a Jew or a Greek, sometimes they say that the KJV isn't matching the meaning of their language.

I really enjoyed this video. I have never had a problem going back and forth between the two versions. My family, by tradition, is Southern Baptist from TN, and we grew up on the KJV. My mom gave me a NKJV for Christmas by mistake one year, and I loved it. It is actually the only version I have read from cover to cover( 3 or 4 times). My mom was horrified when she was made aware of her mistake. She kept insisting that I allow her to give me a KJV instead. I politely refused. It seems to me that the modern versions are similar to microwave cooking, instant gratification, whereas the KJV is more like that Thanksgiving turkey that has to be slow cooked to really be enjoyed. There is no doubt that the KJV requires more in depth study because of the archaic wording and syntax. However, in my case, I believe that my bible studies are much more complete when using a KJV. Understanding the KJV develops over time, and it becomes very rewarding. I pull up Blue Letter Bible when reading the KJV and finding definitions and passage commentary is almost instant. I did research on the Hebrew and Greek wording differences, and found that in most cases the NKJV folks did use an accurate translation. Those differences you mentioned are worth being made aware of, but I found that for extended reading the NKJV works best for me, but for more in depth study I prefer the KJV. I guess that is why the KJV is still the standard used by scholars, and bible translators. I believe that as long as you have a good understanding of both versions, they can be used together without too many hangups. Thanks again for the informative video, and God bless you.

You should do a video proving how the cross that Christians and devil worshippers love to use so much is not an idol! You should show scriptures that prove God commands us to use a cross to represent Him or what Jesus did for us on the cross! I have landed on the KJV myself after going through some of the other versions. Another thing I like about the KJV is I feel it stands out more in my mind...like it is easier for me to remember verses and stuff, like it is more poetic to me so it sticks better or something. And honestly, psalms just isn't the same in a modern English translation. Psalm 23 for instance. Do you really want to read that in anything other than KJV? "Yea though I walk through the valley of the Shadow of Death, I shall fear no evil." Compared to some translations which I would say sound more like: "yes, I walk through a scary kinda place but I ain't sceered a bit, cause my truck window sticker says NO FEAR and I got my "TAP OUT" tee-shirt on man!"

You have to keep in mind the english language at the time was still being developed. We didnt even have a complete alphabet yet. The translation of the bible actually helped the development of our english language, and the way they worded it in english gave us some of the greatest phrases in the english language period. I think changes in the modern versions just make it sound ridiculous.

Thank you so very much for this insight, I have always been a KJV fan but have had a little trouble with all the old English so I tried a NIV to help understand better. After that one of my longtime brothers in Christ informed me of the missing passages and discrepancies in translation I quickly went back to my faithful KJV and purchased a life application Study Bible to help me in understanding. Planning on gifting a KJV Study Bible to my daughter for her 13th birthday coming up as she loves being in the word as well, learning and growing in Christ!

Thank you for this. I'm a new Christian 2 years, Jesus saved me from the new age, occult PRAISE Jesus. Erasmus was a Roman Catholic Priest and we can see clear Roman Catholic influences in the KJV, however it was certainly not a Roman Catholic translation. King James of England authorized the translation of what came to be known as the KJV. He was staunchly opposed to the Roman Catholic Church and he was considered the "head" of the Anglican Church of England. The translators of the KJV were all protestants and most of them were members of the Anglican Church. There were no Roman Catholics associated with the translation of the KJV. Essentially, the KJV is a denominational product of the Anglican Church of England and has theological bias towards the Anglican Church. Be Well. DZ

One were the words Hades and Schoel really in the manuscripts as I could not find the English words in the Noah Webster Dictionary 1828. The other was the verse that all things were created through Him. I had a similar journey when it comes to Bible versions throughout my walk with Christ. When I was a child, I was given an NIV 1984 edition which I still own, and will read only for nostalgia or sentimental reasons, but not for actual study or devotion. I didn’t actually become a Christian until I was in my 20s. My first Bible as a Christian was an ESV which I also still have but no longer use. Then moved on to the new King James and the King James. Currently I have the new King James Warrior Bible as a study aid, and I have a king James as my go to. At the end of the day, prayer, study, and letting the Holy Spirit guide you is always the best way when it comes to things like finding a Bible version or finding a type of church to visit. At least that’s what I found. God has the ultimate drivers license and he wants to drive us around but we have to give him the permission and want to be the passenger. God bless!

I enjoyed your message. I was saved back in 1978. My first Bible was an NIV (just the New Testament). But soon after words I started reading a KJV that someone once gave me. It has been hiding in my book shelves. But when I read the KJV I just felt that it sounded more authoritative and beautiful than the NIV. So I switched to the KJV. It has remained my main go-to-Bible ever since. I just found that it "spoke" to me more than any other translation. Thanks for sharing your message including the NKJV. One thing I think is worth mentioning though, is there is no significant theological doctrine that is erased by any of the omitted verses from the critical text translations. For any of those verses you can find another verse that explains either the same theology or basically the same verse wording in a different place in scripture. So though some verses are omitted, their teaching and theology is not.

I hear people who champion the Critical Text say that often, but it is untrue. There are two doctrines certainly effected. One is the doctrine of the preservation of scripture. The Critical Text folks believe they can cut away the equivalent of 1 and 2 Peter from the New Testament and still hold to the fact that God has preserved His Word to every generation. They Cannot. Another is the authority of scripture. To cut away so much of what God's people have held as scripture so long is to put the science of the textual critic as the one who reveals scripture to the church rather than the Holy Spirit. Many times the Critical Text actually places error in scripture There are certainly doctrines being effected but those doctrines being effected are not recognized, at the very least, in the same way by the Critical Text advocates as the Traditional Text advocates.

It is a matter of personal preference, so to push one translation over another one is a clear indication of bias that could be easily be exposed. Pr Ingram makes a number of good points. First of all, I like his affirmation of the Received Text as the underlying basis for both KJV and NKJV. Second, I like the way he carefully expresses his viewpoints without wild conspiracy theories or excessively demonizing those with beliefs different from his. As far as KJV versus NKJV, I happen to be NKJV, but have always conceded places where KJV is better. He is correct on the distinction between second person singular versus plural pronouns (which contemporary English lacks a good method). One can also make the case that NKJV errs by trying to sanitize no-no words. If the Holy Spirit inspired them in the original, we should keep them in a translation even if it sounds vulgar. One could argue that God might get pissed off at such changes. However I respectfully disagree with him on some points. On literal versus understandable, the reality is that NKJV has a number of readings more literal to the TR. One key example is the Greek "anomos" or "anomia" (literally "without law"). KJV is all over the place "iniquity" "transgression" but NKJV always translates that as "lawless" or "lawlessness". Also in Acts 12:4 NKJV translates "pascha" as Passover. Any debate on KJV versus NKJV needs to explore the frequency with which NKJV is more literal to the Greek (the reason I use NKJV). As far as Hebrew names, I like the NKJV practice of using the same name in both Testaments (Jonah, Isaiah). To use a Greek form creates confusion. If he truly wants to work that issue and truly be literal, he would do well to explore James as a French corruption of Jacob. Some commentators have suggested that using James undermines the true Jewish character of the three people in the NT carrying that name. As far as KJV-Only, I don't perceive someone with carefully crafted reasons for preferring KJV as off base. However, there is a shrill element arguing that KJV is the only legitimate version out there, not because it is a superior translation of the Textus Receptus (as noted NKJV has some better translations), but simply because it is the KJV, and those who read any other version are going to hell. For those people the description of a wacko cult applies. Overall, I appreciate the respectful tone of his presentation, even if my conclusions differ slightly from his.

@@jeffcarlson3269 I respect your opinion friend.I used to be a KJVonly person and I don't want to become one again.Let me explain when I was a KJV only person I felt more spiritual than non KJV reader and every non KJV reader for me is a secret agent for the anti Christ and therefore helping build up the one world church of the Antichrist and felt more spiritual than others and a holier than thou attitude developed in me and I don't want to go back to that again.I'm not saying that all KJV readers have holier than thou attitude,all I'm saying is that is what happened to me.Personally I think this issue on Bible version is more on preference and not conviction and tolerance for me is an important thing to the Bible version issue than has divided Christianity into different segments.I can fellowship with other non KJV readers as long as they don't deny the fundamentals of the faith like believing in Jesus Christ is God in human flesh (John1:14)the Trinity and others.

The KJV Study Bible is the KJV with notes. The NKJV can also be helpful as it does use the same Hebrew and Greek text to translate from as the KJV.

My Grandma who raised me has always instilled Jesus and the Bible in my life.... She is a KJV only type of gal... So I've always used it.. but I do however have a hard time with it.. I'm always constantly looking up words and this and that and rereading verses 5 times trying to get it lol I've never read the Bible cover to cover.. I tried a couple yrs ago.. but failed to stick with it... I really wanted to try a different version... I got a NIV... But still not satisfied... My wife loves it though... So I finally got the courage to tell my Grandma I wanted to try a NKJV... Though she was a bit upset (not really but I could tell something in her demeanor lol) but surprisingly she got me a really nice goatskin NKJV with my name printed on the front.... I love her so much... And I'm about to start my journey of reading it cover to goatskin cover lol 😁

I have always used KJV but came across NKJV study bible for women. While it seemed easier to read, I felt convicted by the Holy spirit to Look deeper into the NKJV for accuracy and possible omissions. So, I started to research on the internet and fell into a rabbit hole of contradictions and accusations etc. My research found only conflicting comments and reviews, but no real answers- until I found this well thought out, honest comparison video. I read the KJV growing up as a Mormon, but when the Lord rescued me from that false religion, I bought a cheap NIV text version, which was popular in the Bible church I attended. But I wanted a study Bible, and, being poor at the time, I got a great deal on a Believer's Study Bible in the NKJV. Like you, the textual notes led me to study and appreciate the textual differences between the critical text and the traditional text, and eventually to the study of the original languages. I use both the KJV nd the NKJV, but always refer to the Massoretic and Textus Receptus when I spot a material difference. Not everyone has the time for that, though, and some are put off by the archaic language of the KJV. The NKJV, despite its flaws, can be helpful to such people. I'm glad you don't demonize the NKJV.

Thanks for your comment! I don't have any problem with using the NKJV or the KJV and have read through both several times. The point I am trying to make in the video is simply that the KJV is more accurate to the original text. I think someone just starting out, as you were, would be fine using an NKJV with the realization that there is a more accurate way to read it. For example, I wouldn't hand a new English believer a copy of the Bible in it's original Greek or Hebrew even though that would be the most accurate text.

As a theology school graduate, I have come to the belief that it is the original manuscripts which were inspired AND NOT translations. I am also a proponent of the received text and I believe they are the most reliable documents for producing an accurate Bible. My only real hang up with the KJV translation is that we do not speak in 1611 English today. Yes, there are some minor problems with the NKJV but with that being said, I still believe it's an excellent translation, however not perfect and the 1611 KJV is also NOT PERFECT. There is no substitute for in-depth study of the original greek, Hebrew and Aramaic, because there are mistranslation of words, even in the 1611 KJV. There is no substitute for in-depth study with competent Greek and Hebrew lexicons. See 2nd Timothy 2:15. I have a good friend who is a competent scholar of the original Hebrew and Greek and he is on a quest to find any significant mistranslations. He has so far, after many years of study, found more than 150 significant mistranslations in the KJV. This is not meant to be critical of the KJV or an attack, but to point out the importance of doing in-depth study, especially when a controversial Doctrine or passage comes up. I understand the difference in translation and original languages. My concern around original language is using all of the passage. Much has been removed from translations using the critical text instead of the traditional text. You are so right! No translation is perfect and with that in mind l don't understand the only KJV people's mentality. So why was the KJV translation came about and not use the previous translations before it? Were those translations not good and missing verses or whatever like the Geneva Bible and so forth? Of what l learned is that KJV was done and over looked by King James because he had some bad stuff going on and that he didn't like the Geneva Bible because it pointed out his wrong doing. All and all KJV is not a perfect translation just like all the others. They have their strength and so as weaknesses just like us humans the ones that did the translating of the Bible. To me find a translation that you can understand because how can you know if you don't understand? Read different translations and compare them and you will find God knows how to keep His Living What Words in tact and it's not in just one translation.

My concern is that the modern translations besides the NKJV and some others have set aside the original source and are using one that deletes the equivalent of 1 and 2 Peter from the Nee Testament. I believe that is a valid concern.

However, I was in a real dilemma after reading some negative things about it. Pastor, it's an important conversation you're having with us, it's appreciated. I was not aware of everything you mentioned, but personally, and I think this might speak for a lot of people, I just use a KJV/NKJV Parallel Bible so when I run into a word or passage I'm not sure about, I read the NKJV equivalent and then I get the gist, I believe. I'm personally trying to simplify everything and frankly all of the disgreement and controversy about pretty much everything in Christianity is very troubling. At the end of the day, I can have converations with: Orthodox, Catholics, Baptists... Methodists.. and agree on the basics and I know where to stop as I want harmony and fellowship. Thanks for your kind words. I use both 5e KJV and NKJV and consider them both reliable. I find the critical text translations to be more like storybook bibles. They have some information but they not all and are t a real bible, but simple stories from the Bible.

You presented the information very well. Thank you. I always felt the kjv was more intimate, not only because of the thee, thou, but also because of the slight nuances in poetry that tell a more deeper interpretation of scripture. For instance, God referred to Cyrus the Great 150 or so years before he was born, He called him by name and described him as becoming a shepherd to His people. Now this is a pretty awesome and intimate prophecy. You get so much more nuances in the kjv that get lost in new translations, and that is truly sad. I read through the bible with an hcsb, it opened the doors for deeper study in Greek and Hebrew, which led me to falling in love with the kjv. New translations are great for new believers, they are a gateway to opening up the kjv to be more understandable; not the other way around😉

I think that the kjv using that "crude" language actually helps us to understand the kind of speech that God actually accepts, when we "sanitize" scripture we are putting our idea of what is acceptable, thus, making life even more difficult by adding another layer that should not exist.

The primary differences between the KJV and NKJV are 1) that one is in an archaic language that no one today speaks or writes in, while the other can be understandably be read by anyone who is English-literate, and 2) the NKJV is more accurately translated than the KJV (due to a better understanding by the 20th-century translators of the ancient Hebrew and Greek languages than was available to the 17th-century translators).

@@PastorScottIngram -- if someone grew up in a KJV-using church, and had the preachers and teachers explain what the unclear, archaic-sounding passages meant, then over time they will be able to understand it. But there aren't very many people now in that situation. Half of Anericans do not attend any church, much less a KJV-using one, and most of those who are regularly in church go to one that uses a more modern translation. People in both groups would have difficulty understanding much of the KJV, especially those verses in which words have either changed meaning over the centuries, or no longer convey ANY meaning to today's English speakers. Why put a barrier like that in the way of people understanding the Bible and being saved by insisting that they use an old translation? Mind, I am not saying that those who like the KJV should stop reading it, but I tire of some of those who do accusing those of us who prefer a more contemporary translation of reading inferior (at best; I've seen accusations of heretical, false, even Satanic) Bibles.

I want to commend you on this excellent video! Not defending the modern critical texts, but we can take confidence in the Gospel, that even translations based on those texts contain, as a whole, all the orthodox doctrines of the Faith. We often act as if the Gospel began with English, but for almost 1500 years the western church used Latin and the eastern church used Greek notwithstanding translations, far earlier than English, in other languages. Many scholars say, although I have never felt compelled to search out for myself, that the New Testament writers, often used the Septuagint in writing the Gospel narratives (except Matthew which Papias and Irenaeus say was first written in Hebrew). This should also have a bearing on which was written first, Matthew or Mark (forget about the mythical Q). One problem we seem to face is that even our good and devout Bible believing brothers who specialize in the ancient languages have been, possibly unaware, had their minds or understandings tainted by some of the worst views of critical scholarship. I have used the NKJV for most of my Christian walk. My study Bible is a NKJV as well. When I am studying and do not understand something I look it up in the KJV and go to the Strong’s Concordance for defining of the words. Having access to a study Bible, a KJV and a Strong’s Concordance has helped me immensely in understanding what I am reading.

In the LSB it says in Luke 22:31 "sift all of you like wheat" with all being in italics to say it isn't in the original but is Implied by the plural "you" in the greek. NASB 2020 also fixes this issue, though that translation has issues of omission in the Ethiopian eunuch verse in Acts 8.

Sir, do you understand why KJV wrote "leaveth" (which means leaves as in he leaves which is present tense), but NKJV wrote left which is past tense in Matthew 4:11? Doesn't -eth always mean to add s or es if in modern English? Also, how would KJV English write left (past tense) instead of leaveth which means leaves. I'm sorry if this seems too particular, but since switching to KJV only I understand so much more and feel closer to my Saviour and want to understand more fully. Thank you so much .

I might have half the answer if in Greek it is proper to switch from past tense to present tense while having already established that it happened in the past rather than in the present, because they are encouraging us to visualize how it was at the time it happened. In the English language we do not switch from past to present and back and forth if we are speaking proper English. In the modern world we need to choose either past or present tense. Therefore there is no magnifying what happened by writing in the present tense after establishing in the paragraphs that it happened in the past. The Greek was trying to, in words, almost place us there at the time it took place so we would understand more clearly. Does this make sense to you?

Back in the 70"s I actually prayed for the creation of a NKJV version and for the most part I've stayed with it but lately I have gone back to the KJV as the language is more majestic. It is after all the Word of God and should sound different. Also, many of the scripture songs that were written back in the 70"s came from the KJV and as a worship leader I to this day lead Gods people into worship using those very songs from the KJV.

I use both the KJV and the NKJV, with a stronger preference for using the KJV. However, whenever I recommend a Bible translation to someone who is new to the Bible and has never really read it before, I always recommend the NKJV simply because it is more accessible due to how it uses updated modern English. The archaic Old English words of the KJV can often turn off people who are new to the Bible, and so I feel that the NKJV is the best alternative.

My first bible after being saved was the NIV bible.... For free might I add, and God new I needed a bible I could understand. Now people can be as mad as they want to but God is the one that blessed me with that bible. I had a desire after a bit to get something that was closer to truth so I now read the NKJV, I right now am about to start reading the original KJV so I can be even closer. See how that works out? People are so self centered and think they know everything... People need to trust in God more instead of being cruel and mean to others just because they are not seeing things the way you see them etc. If there is one thing I learned in life is that I am dumb, and people are dumb, I trust God alone. I don't care how smart someone is, I do not use my mind alone in determining what is right and wrong but the Holy Spirit in me that gives me discernment on all matters. Emotion and logic are one thing, but the Holy Spirit giving you wisdom is something completely different. Also just because the Holy Spirit gives you truths on things doesn't mean that those particular truths are meant to be forced down someone else's throat. Everyone is going through steps and processes in their growth, some people are ready to be buffed, others are barely getting their toes wet.... It's like washing a car, when you first rinse down the car, you use water, some water is cleaner than others, but the further you get while washing a car, even if you had dirty water, once you start to wax, polish etc. the imperfections from the first water you used are wiped away... I believe it is the same for Christians, God can use things that are not particularly perfect or full truth to help you grow.
