What is the ERMI Test for Mold? (and how NOT to interpret it)

Why is the ERMI Mold Score majorly flawed??
The ERMI test has its place in mold testing, but it doesn't give all the answers to a mold problem in the home.
The ERMI can be a starting point or a determiner of cross-contamination or the overall/broad “mold concentration” that is in the home’s dust.
I am saying this because I have done hundreds of on-site inspections and the ERMI test has never given me all of the answers and I never recommend that people make big decisions based on one ERMI test.
The goal of an inspection is finding the source, right? And finding the cause of the source, to the best of our ability. The ERMI test provides some data points that can be of value, but it is almost like a "10,000 foot view."

It is best when combined with other information such as:
1. A full and detailed visual assessment of the home from top to bottom. (and should not take any less than 1.5 hrs of a thorough inspection).
2. Knowledge of the history of the home.
3. Knowledge of the current state of the home (how it is structured, maintained, is there carpet? How is the air flow, ventilation, humidity levels, cleaning habits, filters changes, etc …)
4. Other tests in combination with the ERMI (which is sometimes needed).
5. Several other angles of looking at the home that the ERMI cannot tell us.
