Great Video, im currently serving in the FFL 3rd Infantry Regiment, which specializes on jungle warfare, i do have some corrections though. 04:55 after three years, and upon having the rank of corporal you begin the process of naturalization, however this takes many years and it is usually required to resign at least 2 more years if you want to go through the whole bureaucratic process. 06:45 nowadays you get 45 paid vacation days right off the bat, no matter how long youve been in 13:37 "choosing" your regiment is a bit of an overstatement, the higher your final score is the more you can negotiate, but at the end of the day its stillbthe captail who decides where you are going to be sent. Otherwise fantastic video as always, probably the most informative ive watched on the matter

We had the FFL come to play with us in the 101st Airborne at Campbell in the early 60s. Good folks. They flew in from the jungle school in Guiana as I recall. We jumped and trained together for a couple weeks. The only Frenchmen in the unit were the Officers, no French were in the enlisted ranks.. At that time there were no US Citizens in the unit. I was the Armorer so met them all, when I checked in their arms. I met an American member of the FFL one day going into the court house in Pensacola, FL, saw the winged arm and sword lapel pin, stopped him and he saw my 101st pin, he had done 12 years in the FFL, went to Canada, entered the Legion, as a Canadian. Americans in general are not allowed to join the FFL as doing so can void their US Citizenship, service in a foreign army. There are specific exceptions.

What I find good about the Foreign Legion is that it never abandons its men, the wounded, the war-disabled are cared for and, if they want, integrated into small workshops where they make various things, various goodies, otherwise they can join the Legion wine estate. Then there is even a retirement home for old soldiers. If you don't let the Legion down, it will never let you down. From combat to final rest.

It’s crazy how much info is out there about the Legion, when I joined in 91 I knew nothing except to walk into a French Police station and request to join the FFL. I didn’t even know how much I was getting paid until after training as you’re forbidden from opening your own bank account until you’ve served 5 yrs. When I joined the only criminal offence that disqualified you was an active warrant for murder, I was told if they’re not looking for you yet then you’re all good. Part of training that those joining now will never have is spending a day at one of the Legions Vineyards, I met a former SS solider that was smuggled out of Germany by the Vatican (using the same rat lines they used to smuggle resistance fighters) to Algeria, he talked about his time in Vietnam and how the Legion still fulfils their promise to protect him by letting him live and work in their vineyards.

Only light criminal background is allowed to join the Legion. They have all the organization and experience to check anybody's past. They don't want to enlist crazy people or criminals, drug dealers, etc... At the slightest doubt joining is denied. No way to mess with the Legion.... About starvation during training : the whole French army want soldiers be "skinny cats" with a lot of rusticity. Thus the initial training is used for reaching this. In operation or normal training all the french soldiers eat the same kind of food, supervised by dieteticians. The "combat rations", canned food, are prepared by the best french civilian chefs, contracted by the army's ministry .

@@Dirkdiggl I’ve never, unlike this man, deserted from the FFL (only cowards desert) or dealt drugs. TCAV has an arrest warrant issued for him in France. These are hard facts.

What the ffl means when they take "criminals" they mean if you have a dui theyll take you. Its not much different than just getting a waiver in the u.s army. If You've done anything serious whatsoever you're out.

Well twas not the case back then since they took in LOTS of SS people in post WW2, but the legion did have to tame itself down in the new world since they cant just take in someone like Ben laden in or someone actively looked for by someone for a serious crime due to the political backlash for France (the legion wouldnt care, but they do have an autority above them that does even if they do leave them lots of autonomy overall)
