I live in America but my family is from Gambia and Senegal and there is so much more than what was in this video, it’s beautiful country and if your from America it’s hard to understand the culture and atmosphere. I’ve been there several of times and the sex tourism is something that needs work but depending on the area you won’t see it. It’s a very small country so don’t expect everything to super clean and not crowded. it’s a country that just came out of dictatorship, and the president now is not doing much to help our country. I was excited that you were going to share about my country and how beautiful it is and the people, but now watching I will say I am disappointed, I feel no one really got to see how Gambia really is, with it’s rich culture and amazing people.

I am British and I have been to the Gambia few times. My perception of the country is completely different from Drew's. My friends and I have had amazing times on both of our trips and we are all females from different nations . Two years ago, 10 of us visited and we are all looking forward to going back next year. The people are so welcoming and friendly which was very surprising to us . The only negative thing I'll say is, their is a clear difference between the poor and the rich. We came across extreme poverty in some areas and we were also invited to American like MANSIONS owned by multi millionaires dressed with private swimming pools ,huge gardens , butler's, maids etc. This level of difference did not sit very well with us and we hope the rich will give a helping hand to the poor to make things easier on them. Oh is extremely important to mention that unlike some countries we've visited in Europe and other parts of the world, we felt incredibly safe walking around at night as a group of tourist girls. We genuinely had fun. I believe Drew only visited the not so great parts of the country. We also visited the neighboring country Senegal and had an even better time there !

What a poor view of a entire country . Happening to spent 2,5 days in a country doesn't give you the right to tarnish it's image. You should have done your research properly, gambia has more to offer . Talking about sex tourism, is one of those things that comes with tourism, yes we do have it in the gambia but it doesn't define the whole tourism sector . Next time do your research properly, i guess this whole traveling thing is be coming more of a business adventure to you than the real passion for traveling meeting new people and different cultures. I would rather advice you to go back to your roots than the attitude let's go there film some stuff post it and make some money without thinking of the effects.

Drew, thank you for visiting Gambia and shining some light into this country where I was raised for over 18 years and have returned after 9 years abroad in London. I wish you were able to see Gambia for the multicultural country that it is. I’m a fan of your travel page but I have to say that for Gambia and Sierra Leone, the two countries I call home, you’ve done nothing but shine bad light on these countries. You showed the dirt in Gambia in a very specific part of The Gambia. Why didn’t you also show areas like Senegambia, Bijolo, Cape Point etc where the beaches are much cleaner than what you’ve shown (except when the tide is high and spits things out again like every other country). You’ve shown us in this video Tanji and what looks like Banjul or Serrekunda. The busiest market areas of The Gambia with poorer standards of living. I advice anyone looking to travel to any locations, to also consider that some or a lot of these countries are divided and certain areas aren’t where you will be staying! It’s like when I went to Athens and I was disgusted but then I went to another part of Athens and liked it. Regarding Sierra Leone, you complained about the whole journey and the bribery. Yes, bribery exists because people are poor but you went through the unconventional route and I don’t remember you showing the daily life, party life and the beautiful mountains and beaches the country has to offer. Did you know that Sierra Leone also has a massive waterfall which was recently discovered and one of the biggest in Africa? Again, I’m a fan of your work and admire where you’ve travelled but please be more considerate of those living in these countries and how much they are tired of hearing “sex traffic workers”. Be sue let’s face it, America has that too but we focus on their food and national parks don’t we?

Sex tourism, yes, compared to Thailand not even close, Thailand got a lot of Trans. Girl boys out there but not here. I won’t condone abuse of children for sex by anyone, sadly can’t say it doesn’t . The Gambia a tiny country but showing hospitality aka teranga is a requirement and when it comes to parties and clubs we party hard. You definitely went to some of our ruff clubs , should have tried Aquarius, kora, duplex club …

There are good religious and humble Muslims living in The Gambia too, and MR do some research read a little and talk to the people not everyone is interested in sex tourism and not everyone is dressed in white , who has time for all that. This video is appalling. It is clear that the protagonist has not spent more than a few hours only in The Gambia. Sex tourism is there (and the fault is of Western people and colonialism), but there is so much more to the country. I did not find it dirtier than any other place, there's hundreds of clean and enjoyable (even luxury) resorts and bars, the historical sites (connected to slavery or even going back hundreds of years) are incredibly interesting too. Another very important thing: The Gambia is a majority Muslim country and everybody is definitely very religious, but connoting it as conservative is misleading. Women enjoy large freedoms and wearing the veil in public is a choice for most of them. The relationship with other religions, including the Christian, is mostly friendly and very close. My impression is that the author of the video decided to spend just a few hours in each West African country he was passing through in order to maximise the number of videos he could publish out of his trip (and therefore the views and money he could make out of it). The demonstration to this is that traffic is very widespread in the urban area of The Gambia, making it almost impossible to travel half the country in 2 hours time. It's just a scam. Try to be more respectful of the people and places you portray next time because you have the responsibility to depict Africa in a correct way, considered that the misinformation about the continent is already widespread among ignorant Western people. Thanks.

@magpie1862 Жыл бұрын
From the clips you’ve shown in this video, it actually looks quite nice to me and the people really seem to stand out as being genuinely friendly. Sex tourism may be a thing there but I can’t imagine it’s worse than Thailand. I’m still scarred from what I saw in a bar in Bangkok. Some guy old enough to be my grandfather with his hand down some poor girl’s top and down other places. Made me genuinely sick.

This kind of irresponsible report is why we suffer lots of prejudice here in Europe. I came to Austria 2 years ago to study at the University and people kept asking if I have access to clean water, food, shelter and so on. This for me was a big shock because I lived all my life in Gambia and I never had to worry where my next meal is gonna come from! I host so many white Europeans (for free) and u can see the shock on their face once I walked them into my house and give them their room keys because it’s more comfortable than their house in Europe and u know what am not even from a rich family. The only people who lives on the street are mad people. Show me a homeless person in The Gambia. I’m waiting!!! Sex tourism happens in just a small portion of Gambia that millions of Gambians don’t even know exist!!! Our economy is not even entirely built on tourism in general (not to talk of sex tourism). If you wanna report about my country, please tell the truth. Your agenda is to make Africa look hell and Europe heaven but we came and we saw it too!! I took this so personally because am still a victim of this kind of report but I tell u one thing, u can’t shame us. If I could choose to come back here again, I’ll come as a Gambian. I’m so proud of my country and it’s Unique culture.
