What is the Hardest Calculus Course?
Ok, so which is it? Is Calculus 1, 2, or 3 the hardest one? In this video I give specific reasons as to why one of these is much harder than the others.
Which Calculus course do you think is hardest?

That was the hardest thing about calc 2 for me. I was horrible at the setting up the integrals until I took the time to practice it more over the summer. My university actually taught the disk/shell/washer method in calc 1 and I found it pretty easy to grasp. Personally, I found the integration techniques the hardest part of calc two. Infinite series were more straightforward and the tests for convergence/divergence were never too difficult as long as you could remember all the tests. But for some reason, integration by partial fractions and trig subs absolutely kicked my ass.

For me, calculus I was the hardest since it was a change in my way of thinking about math. Calculus II was my favorite math class and was the class that made me change my minor to math (I'm a Geology major). For some reason I found the sections over infinite series to be very intuitive for me. I was always "bad at math" and had a great deal of anxiety over taking any calculus class. I fortunately had some great professors and discovered I wasn't actually bad a math, I just had not found the right way to study for it. I do find the hardest part about calculus isn't the actual calculus, but the rather messy algebra that can come along with it all. If you see this comment and are about to begin a calculus class, here's some advice... Practice and understand how equations relate to their graphical illustrations and really know how to factor polynomials. Get the basics down and do not underestimate how much your algebra skills will help in subsequent classes. If you have to take Calculus III, pay close attention to vectors and really learn your unit circle (this really applies to all calculus classes).

As someone who aced calc 1, took calc 2 4 times, and aced calc 3 I’d say calc 2 is the hardest because of how many concepts are in it that have nothing to do with each other. As you said disk and shell is just something brand new not been done before. My favorite part about math is how concepts build on each other to become more and more advanced.
@mattdathew2794

i found calc 2 to have topics related to each other & little concepts. Calc 2 is 80% integration, how can you say they that they have nothing to do with each other. The integrations themselves have no new concepts as integration & derivatives are calc 1 concepts & partial fractions are precalc or algebra 2 concepts. The only new concepts are volumetric integrations & series tests. on the other hand calc 3 concepts have nothing to do with each other, lines intersecting planes have nothing to do with dot products or cross products which have nothing to do with jacobians or gradients or stoke thm which have nothing to do with cylindrical or polar cordinates

@@mattdathew2794 I agree with him, calc 2 seemed like a jumbled mess of ideas. Integrals on their own are a lot to take in, they were just barely glanced over in the final week or two of calc 1 for me. A couple weeks into integrals and trig identities and all that and it's basically all out the window moving onto stuff like Trapezoidal and Simpson's Rules that get mentioned in a single lesson or two maybe and immediately forgotten about until they show up on your midterm. Then you're onto sequences and finding general terms which break my sad little primate brain because I can see the patterns at play but have little success trying to express it as anything that would be worth points in a gradebook. Just on the off chance you're not good at sequences, series come out nowhere to further destroy your grades and bring what feels like 50 different tests for evaluating them that you've never heard of before and that don't always work or yield any useful information at best, and actively mislead you and give the wrong answer at worst. Assuming ratio tests and whatever haven't destroyed your grade and you are still enrolled in the course, you get to move onto Taylor and Maclaurin series that feel like their own unique beasts and will definitely be on the final. Finally, having survived all that, you can move onto material that actually resembles stuff you've seen before with arc lengths and surface areas and parametrization, which, if you're lucky, may be worth like 6% of points on the final. Calc 2 is hell and it never got better in the 3 times I took it. I don't have high hopes for calc 3, but I know at least it isn't calc 2.

@@faceless2302 I can see why you found it hard, I think different schools teach maths in their own unique ways. Our calc 1 final weeks were also integrals but we spent more time on them as some were definite then later we started indefinite. By the end of calc 1 we cold integrate all small expressions properly, the 2 weeks your school gives are probably not enough. We also did simpson's rule but in calc 1 not 2 Our teacher used graphics to explain how Trapezoids & cylinders of calc 2 are integrated, he was making them I think with wolfram alpha, before that I was lost. We also had arc lengths and surface areas and parametrization in precalc & may be more parametization in calc 3, but none in 2 or 1. We also had weekly quizzes & they would give us solutions afterwards for revisions as well as 3 midterms. So I think different schools do it differently, we were lucky but it was still very procedure intense, I could easily work on one integral for a full page or a half more on an exam.

Calc III is definitely the hardest, no question about that. Thinking about multivariable functions, parametrization, constrained optimization, setting up double/triple integrals, all the vector Calc theorems... no doubt Calc III is the hardest. But I can see why people say Calc II is the hardest. In Calc I, you are given specific algorithms that never deviate (product rule, chain rule...) and you think about everything in 2 dimensions. When you get to Calc II though, there is no obvious way to evaluate an integral so you have to try U-sub, then parts, then trig, then hyperbolic or weirstrass... it’s just a lot more steps. Plus, I agree, the washer and disk methods are hard to wrap your head around the and infinite series is a struggle also.

I think one of the biggest reasons why calc 3 feels harder for me is the fact that in my calc 2 class, a lot of people just like me were bad at math, and it wasn’t too hard to get average or above average on tests, and since the tests were curved, as long as you are average or above, you’re fine. Once you take a calculus class above calc 2 however, almost everyone in your class is a math wiz. I think I am one of only around 3 people in my class who are barely passing calc 3 at the moment.

Series were hard in calculus 2 because they came toward the end of my fall freshman semester, not because the math itself was inherently hard, and it was just a lot to keep in mind with all of the other science classes. Once they came up again in differential equations, they weren't that bad, and in complex analysis, they finally made complete sense as I had more experience writing proofs and doing page-long calculations with inequalities.

What I’ve found is that Calculus theories/methods are easy to understand after a little studying. But it’s the algebra concepts (we never thought we’d have to use again) being slightly off that screws the whole problem. It really puts your cumulative math knowledge to the test. It can be exhausting spending 20 minutes or more on a question and then finding out it was a simple algebra error holding you back. Or a simple calculus concept forgotten for a double whammy. These are the reasons why doing lots of practice problems are important but take so much time and will power to finish.

In my case I was good at Calculus II (integral) but failed the first time (the professor was extremely difficult level). On next semester I passed the course with a really good one who taught us to do really amazing problems. I passed also Calculus III (several variables) but with low score; I've actually never learned Stokes/Green theorems and their properties, also I almost didn't learn surface integrals. I had to start my (college) academic career in elementary algebra and go through a few classes before I could get into Calc 1. I am currently taking Calc 2 in what is probably the worst time to learn something (All online because covid). Here are my thoughts... Calc 1 Hard if you're disorganized (like I was). This class forced me to write neatly. This class got me to start doing my homework. This class had me changing my life habits on the real hahaha. That being said it still felt doable. Sure it felt like a lot of work sometimes but you could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Just take your time and show every step. This class taught me patience. This class also had me dyslexic for some weeks when we started learning about antiderivatives lol. Calc 2 This is the class where you can just see a problem and literally feel your world slipping away from you lol. In this class you turn the page and go, "...seriously?.." This the class that make you start staring at walls on your days off. A reason? (Hint: starts with trig). Calc 2 be like: hope you remember everything. Ok I'm tired, gn

i havent taken calculus 3, but i made an average grade of 80-something in calc 1 and am currently sitting at an average grade of 99.3 in calc 2 two weeks before the final. the concepts are way harder in calc 2, but the difference is that in calc 2 you’re coming from calc 1 so you already have a decent foundation of calculus and how the basic concepts work. in calc 1 the concepts are so vastly different than what you learned in algebra that if you are like me you’re going to struggle initially, especially if your trig knowledge is shaky. so if you didnt do too well in calc 1 like i did and are worried about calc 2 because everyone says it is harder, dont worry, the only things you really need to have down like a pro are integration/differentiation and trig.

My natural talent is with spatial relations and 3-D geometry, so the disk and shell methods were candy to my eyes. I also didn't have a problem setting up word problems and that's probably because I actually majored in physics. I did have a lot of problems with the infinite series, but I think part of the reason for that is that I simply wasn't interested in them and basically saw them as a waste of time when I was studying them in college. I might view them differently today. I just didn't see a practical use for them at the time. I wasn't studying as a pure mathematician. I was studying as a physicist, so if I didn't see a real-world application i found it difficult to get interested in what I viewed as having little practical value. The disk and shell methods were obviously quite practical and useful both in concrete applications, and also in an abstract geometric sense.

Calc 2. Felt more like tipping point and climax. 1 Introduces integrals at the very end of semester, and limits, derivatives, and differentiation applications are glimpse in Calc 1 to give students enough time to review basic algebra and trigonometry to make sure to hone. Calc 3 is like downhill of the climax with a bit more new concept intros though you cannot deny that 1 & 2 adds 3.

I finish the calc series in a few weeks. Hands down calc 2 is the hardest of them. There are so many new concepts. This class has so many stuff going on. I had trouble with the whole integration and series chapters. Calculus 3 is more fun, but its hard to be able to visualize the planes and surface you are working with. So far the hardest parts have been surface integrals and these over vector fields. Parameterizing these can be tricky but not impossible. Learning online because of covid is hard, but stick in there and everything is possible!!

Definitely calc 1 is so far the hardest for me. In calc 3, right now. Calculus was such a big different aspect to math that it was hard for me to grasp at first. After I started to understand it, the other classes were a bit easier. For instance, long derivatives got to me the first time. But when integrals were introduced in calc 2, I understood it easier because it was the opposite of derivatives. Plus, I realized KZbin really helps studying lol.

Convergence tests for series are ok, computing what the series actually converges to is another thing, and thats usually a pain in the butt. If you're proving vector identities for calc 3 then its potentially more tedious than calc 2, its hard to tell when your brain or your hand gets tired first. Complaining about the amount of indices will probably get the instructor to think less of your ability to keep up, especially if they're a geometer or analyst.

I didn’t have a tough time with calculus 2 because I decided to devote so much time to hw and asking questions. Passed with an A after getting a C in calculus 1. The shell methods were only easy for me to visualize because I took a solidworks course that helped me see how the functions would look when revolving around a certain axis. That part helped me out a lot. Currently going over calculus 3 before my class starts and it alresdy seems complicated. I just get so easily lost with vectors and unit vectors and magnitude and i am still confused how unit vectors correlate to direction of the vector. Calculus 1 was tough for me. It was a whole new world and I couldn’t grasp the concepts fast enough or understand what my professor was trying to explain when discussing the concepts behind them. The exams were more on the comprehensive side which threw me off. I got better going into calculus 2 since I applied myself and read a little bit of the text book to get a better understanding.

In my opinion infinite series was difficult to understand because I was never really exposed to idea of if a summation would ever have a definite answer. A summation isn't hard to understand but being able to tell if it's converging or diverging with only the formula and no visual aid is very difficult. A lot of room to over think any unfamiliar summation that you've most likely seen before. What i mean by the previous sentence is that it's a bit different from your homework or class notes when you're taking the exam. I think it would've be an easier experience had we've been exposed to idea that functions in our algebra class can converge or diverge.

Hey man I just took Calc 2 and I watched your video at the beginning of the semester. I ended the semester with an A and started with about a B+. What I will say about Calc 2 is that it is monumentally harder than Calc 1. In Calc 1 i probably studied only a few hours per week, but in Calc 2 easily 16+ hrs a week. Personally, the hardest concept for me to grasp was volumes (disk/shell method) but once I grasped it it became easy. Other than that, series were a close second, specifically involving conceptual questions. I remember studying nearly every problem in the book for the final and ended up getting an 88 on the final and a 93 in the class. By far, it was the hardest class I took this semester.

While I do believe Calc I was the easiest of the Calc courses, failing to comprehend the basics can set you up for trouble in the calc array. Calc 1 goes over the fundamentals and exactly why you use dy/dx or Riemann’s sum and integration. The coursework is fairly simple but the theories must be conceptualized before exiting this class. Calc II is definitely the hardest in terms of coursework. The problems assigned can take pages of work and there is room for error in the algebra. Trig substitution was killer and often discouraged me to finish an assigned problem. Luckily, the theories and concepts are easier to grasp in Calc II and the geometric analysis portion is fairly simple compared to Calc III. I thought Calc III was easier in terms of coursework but the theories and concepts were harder to visualize.

From hardest to least is Calc 3 (A), Calc 1 (B) and Calc 2 (A). After taking a break from math for several years, calc 1 was hard for me because I was learning new material while trying to remember old material I needed to know going into the class. For calc 2, after just taking calc 1 I was able to connect to the next stages of calc 2 with ease. Overall I found calc 3 to be the hardest because I couldn't visualize the 3 dimensional math problems as quick as I wanted to.

Calc 2 is hardest, but I found the disk/shell method easy - it just clicked in my head. Series and Sequences are the hardest to assimilate. The various trigonometric integration methods are difficult to understand and remember. Calc 3 is easier to grasp because it applies to more concrete problems - its just easier to conceptualize. I spent a few years in self instruction through video courses and online texts, and ultimately proof-read parts of an online calculus 3 text for a University professor. I have yet to take calc III, but I will say I found calc I to be more difficult than calc II. The reason is because derivatives in calc I require many more formulas and rules such as product, quotient, and chain rules (much more memorization heavy) whereas antiderivatives in calc II are simply just knowing algebra plus a couple methods in order to get the integrand down to a state where it can simply be solved using the power rule. I also think that I didn't really grasp the concepts of calc I completely until I learned integration, so early on in calc II is where it all clicked for me.

Several variable real analysis is the hardest. Generaly speaking, I have problems with the way infinity is used these days, as I believe potential and actual infinity are different concepts, but mainstream maths treats them the same ie, as if there is one infinity only.
