In April 1699 Guru Gobind Rai, the 10th Guru of the Sikhs, called all Sikhs together to Anandpur, Punjab. He stood on a stage in front of 10s of thousands of Sikhs, with a raised sword and asked if anyone was prepared to give their head for the Faith. Bhai Daya stepped forward and to all present, it looked like Guru ji had just beheaded him. The 10th Guru demanded another head and now Bhai Dharam gave his head. After five such Sikhs had given their heads, the Tenth Guru then prepared Amrit (Nectar of Immortality) by reciting Five important prayers whilst stirring water in a cast iron bowl using a Khanda (double edged sword). As he was doing so, his wife, Mata Jito ji, added sugar crystals. Once the five prayers were done and the Amrit was ready, Guruji then brought out the five whom had given their head. They were now as if revived from the dead and were adorned with Turbans, Swords, Breeched Shorts and Iron Bangles. Guruji gave them Amrit to drink five times, sprinkled it in their eyes five times and in their hair five times, whilst each time they were to say,
"Vaheguru ji ka Khalsa, Vaheguru ji ki Fateh"
They were proclaimed as the Punj Piare, (five beloved) and were given the surname, Singh and told they were re-born into the Gurus own family. The Khalsa was called the Guru Khalsa, the physical Guru henceforth. Guru Gobind Rai now asked them to adminster Amrit to him too and let him join the Khalsa. He was now called Guru Gobind Singh, forever to the remembered as the Guru who became the Disciple of his Disciples. In this way, by devolving the physical Guruship to the Guru Khalsa collective, the Sikh faith was no longer to follow any individual physical Guru, but to take guidance from the writings and wisdom of all 10 Gurus and follow the code of conduct prescribed on that day. This video goes into the broader themes given to the Khalsa on that day.
