What is the Machine God in Fear and Hunger 2: Termina?
Entering the world of Fear and Hunger 2: Termina, the mystery is planted, what is underneath the city of Prehavil? The protagonist will have to explore the ravaged city, underground and the vicinity to slowly piece together clues regarding what the logic and the machine god are. Hidden through out are teleletroscope stations that connect to something. Join us as we dive in to the lore of the hit indie game Fear and Hunger 2: Termina, and analyze the story of the Machine God and the King in yellow. Spoiler alert since we do explain the ending.
In this video essay we go over the history and lore of Fear and Hunger 1 and 2. Starting with the lore and events of Fear and Hunger 1 and continuing into the events of the second game. The background of Le'garde and the events in the dungeon that lead to the rise of the God of Fear and Hunger and the start of the Cruel Age.
Fear and Hunger 2 starts with the 14 participants of the Termina festival on a calm late night train ride into the city. Little did they know the festival was already well under way.

Getting this ending affirmed to me how the game’s Individualist vs Collectivist sub-conflict is present near-exclusively in its visuals. While the Machine God would provide peace and unity with all of humanity, humanity would never experience anything that can be tied to their own lives as individuals and be able to grow as people, like what Marina, Karin, Da’an, and Olivia gained throughout the events of the game.

@@tacobanana_forever Of course, when it comes to Collectivist, many of the enemies fought during the lead up to Kaiser and the Machine God show very little identifying features, even when the Bremen soldiers are marked as different by the game, their designs (apart from their weaponry) are the exact same. Likewise, the Platoon is assumed to be literally comprised of hundreds of people in one Sylian Marriage, only meant to serve its function for the army. Meanwhile the individualist side is better represented by the other ending, the Sulfur God, where a lot of those who are associated with him such as Needles, Stitches, and Per’kele operate alone and have their own methods of fighting against Kaiser, mainly by causing harm to others one way or another. Likewise, in the Sulfur God ending, the character you got the ending with is appointed among the same type of person as the enemies mentioned prior. This is what’s most overt about it, but there is a case to be made about the remnants of Rher’s role in that theme too and how Prehevil operated before and during Termina.

My own random thoughts: it seems power levels of the gods in the world of F&H are related to their associated concepts. The more pure & universal the concepts, the more powerful the deities. Fundemental concepts like Grobro's "destruction" and Silvan's "creation" make them amongst the strongest, while new gods associate with minor concepts, often a subset of older gods larger concepts, are significantly weaker. Concepts evolve too, such as god of depths' "primitiveness" being taken over by gof&h 's newer concept fear and hunger aka huamnity's "desire for survival". Another case of evolving case is logic's taken over of nature, as human understand more and more about nature, nature's original concept transform into science and logic. The prominent role of Sulfur vs Logic seems to represent human being's own invention of concepts, existentialism / individulaism vs collectivism / communism which play stronger and stronger roles as society advances.

Vinuskha being replaced by logic actually makes a lot of sense because it is totally realistic with the way humanity used to worship nature in the past, but as time passes and science evolves, we start to see nature as something inferior to us, which also It is related to the fact that humanity "killed" vinuskha and created logic to replace it, just as in real life we are destroying nature and shaping it to our vision using logic and science.

Judging by how it seems the creator of the games takes a lot of inspiration from RL, I'm going to assume that the machine god ending is probably cannon to some degree. Mostly just cause I wouldn't be surprised if they do another game if theres another big time skip to a more digital age brought on by the Machine God's influence, similar to how the god of Fear and Hunger brought on the last age and moved it along. It does kinda make me wonder if maybe Le'garde is actually doing exactly what the prophesies say he will. Hes guiding humanity into a better? course, or at least keeping things from stagnating at the very least. The caveat of course is that hes doing so through ridiculous amounts of pain and suffering. Now does that mean he will actually accomplish his goal? No idea. But I do find it very interesting that everything in both games basically plays out through his grand plans and the player characters are unwitting pawns or just caught up in the consequences of his actions.

That's a very good point I hadn't considered, like you said, Le'garde's plan has worked out in both games. I'd love a third game, I still feel the story of Fear and Hunger isn't done, the war between the Gods with humanity caught in the middle. It feels like they probably want to continue adding content, IMO there's still some plot holes that could be filled in. I would be intrigued to see what happens after the Age of the Machine God. Fear and hunger + Sci Fi would be interesting. Could probably draw on the Three Body Problem a bit for it's horror space vibes

I feel like smaller channels get more of a pass for using AI art, at least in my opinion. Art takes either a lot of talent and time to produce, a decent amount of money to purchase commissions/licenses for art, or a large enough fanbase to get fan art from. Don't get me wrong, I think tacobanana used it in a way that added to the experience of the video. However, I don't think I would feel the same if a larger/wealthier channel did a similar thing.

@@tacobanana_forever tbh, in your kind of video it doesnt really help much since most of the things that you put on the screen are things that exist on the game and already have images, but if you want to there are ways to use it, for example if there is a mention of sulfur seas you could get an AI representation of it, or perhaps even the green universe of the gods, using the AI to represent characters that are already represented In-Game, if it talks about a character or a god that doesnt get visual representation than you could use it get an image, maybe even if you wanted a visual representation of fights, also something that i see is the square images that the AI give should be worked a little more on the edges since just a square images doesnt look that good. Hope i could help

Thanks for the nice video! Personally I really like stories regarding Deus just due to how close we are to that reality right now(personal views of the Deus being a rise of a new godlike being likewise to what the antichrist may be; AI being the literal antithesis to humanity). A few games and anime that dealt with the existence of Deus I've played were Xenogears, Girls Frontline, and Serial Experiments Lain. Xenogears wrote Deus moreso like a alien-type being that existence on the earth from a bygone era, later leaving and returning in the future to assimilate humanity to a collective consciousness thanks to a shadow government. I'd say Girls Frontline deals with Deus's presentation similarly to F&H. It's a Metal Gear Solid with AI anime girls type story taking place in an alt. history 2060s after WW3 which the first fully armed AI war took place. The majority of the story takes place in Europe. To give some context, objects in the series known as "Relics" exist which have an unknown level of technology seen in the world simarily to something divine like the Ark of the Covenant. They're so advanced they even got the Tsarist Russians a 40 year head start on Relic/Automation research in the 1900s during the story. After awhile, one of the researched Relics in China screwed up in the 2040s and imploded, causing a brand new fatal radiation to emerge from the lab and spread into the atmosphere, leading to half of the world to becoming radioactive. This would mean that AIs would be the only ones now to really be able to explore the planet outside of safe zones. The first mention of Deus takes some time into the story, where a cult emerges in Germany that goes by Paradeus. The members of Paradeus typically are transhumanist cultists that attempt to gather members affected by the radiation and discard their humanity to gain immunity through transhumanism. They would end up sneaking into governmental positions to gain power in multiple European countries(mainly to take control of homeless shelters and orphanages to obtain more potential members). Coincidently, there's even a story arc later where the said cultists invade Bremen to disguise as citizens and push their own agendas within the city. Anyway, hard to summarize everything about it, but I enjoy thinking about where all of this AI will lead us in the next few years. It's evident enough that soon they will end up taking the majority of jobs leaving these generations that don't know how to work even more clueless about the world and subjected to AI. There's already plenty of instances now of people having services of AI teaching humans like through language learning, coding, conversational partners, or even psychological aid(not so recommended). The game itself is a mobile game which CAN be played relatively easy on a PC, but can be a gatekeep for some. You can still get around it and read the stories on youtube since there's plenty of people/resources that record it. If you want a good feel for the context and story for the series, I'd recommend watching the three part backstory lore videos on youtube which go over how the world reached this point in the story. There's plenty of resources online through googling to help guide people to read the story since that's what everyone invested in the series is playing for. It's a pretty hefty visual novel if you aren't directly playing it, but it's a really great read all the same. It's getting a sequel game sometime later which will play like X-COM titled Girls Frontline 2 sometime global in early 2024. My comment comes from the observation that the Festival thing really has nothing to do with the game. Maybe I am not understanding things right but the way I see it is. You can finish the festival thing and not care at all about le'garde doing his thing and it doesn't really affect the outcome and if you do go after le'garde it seems like: nothing happens. The New Gods are there but they're not really doing anything The first game feels like everything is there for a purpose, even the way you die or the ways you can "fail" feel very organic. We have August and he just dies, we have Moonless and the thing doesn't really do anything. You can infer that Marina is a descendant of Enki who reached real ilumination and by her ending he/she just becomes a hooker who does magic on the side? I'm hyper fixated on this game and the first one right now. I am trying my hand at godot and learning C and have always wanted to make a game and seeing how this game is "new" is just a mind blow. One of the things that I dislike from gaming now is that projects become so big that they end up being about nothing and seeing a very fleshed out, indie, 2D game out here seemingly breaking all the rules is fantastic but I really see Termina as the inferior one in terms of history. Now, in terms of gameplay and mechanics, the second seems to be the better one. I hoe I can learn something from this too. @@tacobanana_forever

The world of man too has flaw so we can correct and become better person. And many other interpretation of the concept of flaw. But what give me dread of a machine god and terrify me to a lesser extent in the i.a digital art is the absent of flaw , what if we end up making a supercomputer with the calcul power to correct all his flaw and end up... perfect. It would be... so ... unatural ! Its the same reason why I.A digital art terrify me. Even when it mess up the background, the hand or the eye... its... well... kind of flawless and terrifying , like ultra too clean precision work. A giant orb in the sky with a man's face acts as the god that runs what is essentially a battle royale of people forging a 'reason' in which to reshape the world if they battle it out to reach the big tower in the center of it all. The protagonist has a striking resemblance to Levi from Termina, and he ingests demon parasites to acquire new powers and magic. You can kill god and doom the world, or accept his terms and reshape it, and only one can reach the top to decide the fate of the world. Mind you I'm abridging the HELL out of this summary, but it has MANY familiar strokes to F&H2's setup. Honestly? If you like a painfully hard turn-base RPG's with a story of dealing with primordial forces that make up the world, then I cannot recommend Nocturne enough. I would not be surprised if it's one of the inspirations for Orange here in Termina, and Levi will always make me think of the Demi-Fiend.

not a fan of the AI art; i understand it's easier, but using official game art, drawing your own, requesting use of fanart, or commissioning artists (with proper crediting as well) would be a lot better. i enjoy watching your videos for information on fear and hunger (you do a lot of good coverage!) but i hope going forward the ai art changes to legitimate art. it's well worth the cost and effort

Thanks for your opinion. I'd like to one day be able to commision art, but the math ($$) just isn't there yet, i'm not going to be able to find an artist who'll create numerous images for $10 or less. But..... maybe in time. I was also experimenting, I'm an engineer and am very curious with AI, so I was curious how people would receive stuff like this. As a data nerd, using AI was the 1st time I was able to materialize images or pictures I had in my mind, since I'm far more versed in data parameters rather than art. I have considered doing my own art, but that would be more of a comedy/satire video, since the art would be atrocious. There's also a time factor, making videos takes time, if I were to try to generated high quality art by myself, i'm not sure how long each video would take me. I got lucky and got several small things amulet, so when I recorded the footage I was able to beat the Logic in the 1st phase. I think since it was my 1st video game lore video, I thought "no one is watching it anyways", but i was pleasantly surprised with the view the video go!

Also, while the AI video clips look kinda crap (IMO I'd definitely stick to still images until that particular tech improves), the pictures are much appreciated vs looking at the same official art assets and gameplay we've all seen a million times! The people bitching and moaning about you using AI generated art and not paying human artists for a bunch of custom work which is COMPLETELY financially unfeasible for a small independent creator are the same kind of anti-engineering/anti-progress lunatics who were tearing down the then brand new mechanical looms in textile factories 150 years ago because "They took our jorbs!!!". So screw 'em. 🤷 Scientific progress waits for no man, as it damn well shouldn't! Either learn to adapt to an ever changing and advancing world, or just give up and die off like countless no longer existent forms of manual human labor have already. Thanks for the feedback on the AI video clips, I'll keep that in mind, I wasn't too sure what I thought about them, so good to hear another perspective. Glad you liked the images! You can do a lot of really interesting stuff by pulling prompts from art history (not that i know anything about that). On this video i was experimenting taking screenshots of the environments in the game, separately render a character and then blend/merge the two. I'm also just learning more about making videos and what looks good, so let me know what you think! Good and bad. Hahaha I agree, I think of people that would have been protesting the creation of the printing press. AI is going to be controversial, its going to be the best new tech, and the worse new tech, creating winners and losers. I'm a data/engineer type of person, so I'm fascinated by these new data tools that allows me to render the picture I had in my head, or some idea that popped into my mind. I'm not sure how someone would be able to make dozens of original images for a video, I think i spent like 20 - 30 hours on this video, there's no way I could have made my own images by hand, and still have any semblance of life balance. I got chores and dinner to cook! AI tools does allow for a small 1 person channel like mine to hit above our weight class when it comes to visuals. Besides, it's fun to learn about how these things work. At this point, i'm trying to learn as much as I can about AI (got some cool new stuff I'll be using in my next Termina video) and machine learning as possible. Regardless of what anyone wants or thinks, its already becoming transformational technology, besides..... the nerd in me thinks this stuff cool, but yeah some people are going to be screwed over by AI, like a lot of artists :(
