I'm old enough to remember when Ronald Wilson Reagan was running for (and eventually won) the presidency in 1984. A couple of kids in school mentioned that each of his names has 6 characters, making the symbol for his name equivalen to 6 6 6. At the time, I was young enough to NOt know that every single word in English has almost nothing to do with ancient Greek, ancient Hebrew, or Aramaic. Spoiler alert: I survived Reagan's presidency without any marks on my forehead or my hand.

Spot on, Jimmy, when you expressed concern that the word "conspiracy" has been devalued and largely used to dismiss or even attack the views of others with which the person disagrees. This is not unlike those who call others racists, homophobes, xenophobes, etc., because those people don't agree with them. This type of tactic devalues the true meaning of these words, as well as devalues other people and their legitimate views on some important topics.

There's always the idea that some sort of technology will be used to discriminate against those without it. Mark of the Beast aside it is a valid point of concern when the idea of limiting liberties to those who refuse gets floated around

I am curious what Jimmy thinks of the verse (I don't know where it is) that states something to the effect that the delusion will be so strong, that if it were possible, even the saints would be fooled. How does that fit into the Church will warn us, and any Christian will see it coming from a mile away (paraphrasing?) That seems in direct contrast with the verse, as though it's super easy to get through such a thing.

@@fragwagon Yes, but see the high ladder there. We're talking about "the saints" and them barely squeaking by from the sounds of it. It don't sound too good for the average catholic joe as Jimmy seems to think. As well, this is nothing special whatsoever unless it's a delusion that is like none we have ever known, for we know people are routinely deceived about the most simple things, many of which concern matters of the Faith.

@@charles2241 The second beast makes people worship the first beast, then raises up a statue of the first beast and brings it to live. Then it makes everyone wear the Mark. The Mark is either the name of the first beast, or the number of it's name. Although the scriptures say (this is all from revelation 13:11-18) that the second Beast will deceive many with signs, I think you are still somewhat safe if you stay away from the worship of one individual. It could also be possible that all of these things happen at the same time, so the mark would not be as easy to identify. I think what many people miss about the Mark of the Beast, is that they look for the Mark individually, but the first Beast needs to rise before that. The first beast is described with a head that seems as been fatally wounded, an it get's healed, and that's something the world wonders about. The statue is also specifically about the healing of the wounded head. I don't know exactly what that means, but something like a survived - seemingly deadly - attack followed by a reappearance of some leader, or maybe a "miraculous" rising again of a fatally wounded system like the EU seem plausible to me here. So maybe just stay away from anything that tries to make something political or worldly into something sacred. God bless you.

I've had my own take on the number. None of it affects anything you've said here. First, I take the latter date for Revelation's authorship (under Domitian instead of under Nero.) So for me, if it's future to John writing it out can't reference Nero. I think there might be a clue in the term "Alpha and Omega" used at Revelation 1:8, 21:6, and 22:13. In Greek, it says, "τὸ Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ." Notice that "Alpha" is spelled out, and "Omega" is just the letter standing by itself. I always thought that was strange, so I started running the gematria on this construction to see what would pop out. It turns out that the gematria for the word Alpha is 532 and for the letter Omega is 800, giving a total of 1332. This is double six hundred and sixty-six. Even though I didn't notice that right away, when I did it gave me hope that I'm on the right track. I then ran 1332 against various names for Christ, and when I did Jesus Emmanuel (Ἐμμανουήλ Ἰησοῦ) I also got 1332. If we consider the version of Hadrian's name "Ποπ Αδριανος" adds up to six hundred and sixty and six, being short for Publius (Ποπ, short for Ποπλιος) Hadrian (Αδριανος) then this works. This makes Hadrian the beast.

You should check out Bauckham's "The Climax of Prophecy." He does a LOT with 1332, which is the 36th rectangular number, just as 666 is the 36th triangular number! Also, if I'm wrong and Revelation was written during the reign of Domitian, I wouldn't see that as precluding Nero as being the Beast in one sense and another emperor as its imminent fulfillment (after all Nero was already dead when I think the book was written as well, and John's readers were to look for a returning Nero-like figure). Can you point me to documentation of Hadrian abbreviating "Publius" in Greek as pi-omicron-pi? That's a little counter intuitive since Greek has both upsilon and beta.

@@JimmyAkin I'll check out that book! Thanks! As for the abbreviation, the Greek translation of "Publus" is "Ποπλιος." You can see that on the Greek version of the Wikipedia page for Hadrian. el.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%91%CE%B4%CF%81%CE%B9%CE%B1%CE%BD%CF%8C%CF%82 It's not a transliteration, it's a translation. I think they both have roots with similar meanings, but I may be misremembering. So with that, you can see it's the natural Greek abbreviation. I can't find any examples right now, but I'm pretty sure I've seen it on coins for various emperors.

Ok but revelation also says that there are seven kings (emperors) up until that point with 5 of them passed one is and the other still to come. By the time of Domitian there were more than 7 Emperors by that point so Domitian doesn't really fit here.

Back in the Eighties I occasionally saw a pro-environmental greeting card with Revelation 7:3, truncated. Just “do no harm to the earth or the sea or the trees,” nothing else. Weird.

I was writing about the mark myself. In my opinion the mark is a clear reference to the phylacteries mentioned in Matthew 23:5 which is further referenced by Deut 6:8 and Ex 13:9.

I heard once that the mark was something that looked LIKE the Greek characters for the actual number 666, that is, chi xi sigma, but was not actually a number. Rather, it was the designation for two crossed swords and the Arabic symbol for Allah turned on its side, which contains a character similar to the Greek xi. So it would be an Islamic mark of some kind, which makes this prophecy future-looking. Under Islam, Christians are second class or dhimmi, and don’t have the same economic or political access as Muslims, and certainly have faced persecution. Any thoughts?

This is a meaning that would never have been understood by St. John or his audience in the 1st century. John clearly understood what the mark was and who the Beast was, and he invites the wise among his 1st century readers to figure it out also. This would be a serious problem for any interpretation based on Islam, which didn't appear until half a thousand years later, especially when we're only talking about visual similarities between letters and swords. Very weak.

Hi Jimmy, I have a serious weird question. It’s about sacraments and animals. Could animals technically be allowed to receive sacraments- or a case be made one day? Is it really necessary for one to understand sacraments before receiving them or needing salvation when babies in Eastern Catholic Church can receive communion and other sacraments? I am huge dog lover, and at our outdoor Mass in Kona Hawaii, we used to always have owners bring their dogs along. They were very respectful. We had two dogs come along with Francis of Assisi medals on their collars (They would always kneel down down respectfully with humans during the Eucharist- I never saw them being given sacraments, but wonder one day if they could be permitted to them...) I have a traumatic memory of putting down my dog and always wondered if not communion, whether my dog would be allowed to be given Annointing for the sick.... I know Jesus said “do not give dogs what is holy”, but I truly want to know if this is just a question of context? Didn’t Christ Jesus did not just for humanity but for all of creation too? So my question is, can a case be made for animals to receive sacraments? If not, why not? What would a future look like where dogs and dog lovers can receive the sacraments side by side?

To be frank, I'm still a bit confused about the whole Mark of the Beast thing; if the Christians during the Early Church period were presumably being marked and subsequently martyred, how should one interpret this? It's all very confusing to me.

The seal of the Lamb/God protects one from judgments inflicted by God's angels to punish sinners. It does not stop the righteous from being persecuted by wicked humans. Revelation makes the point that the pagan Roman system will be martyring Christians.
