After watching different Meisner videos, this one actually made sense and cleared a lot of the “cringe” up! So much more human and not forced.

I just started learning Meisner and these videos are so helpful. I’m learning as much as possible. I am stumped on how to avoid just repeating and knowing what I’m allowed to say. The classes I’m taking really focus on us pinpointing the emotion we’re feeling or what we believe your partner is feeling. I’m struggling to have it flow more and pinpoint more than just emotions. Thank you!

This is very common for people who are just starting, and the advice I give them is very simple. Being focused on getting the moment right and pinpointing something hyper-specific can be restrictive. You may find yourself paralyzed by indecision as you struggle to convey a moment. During that time, tons of moments will have gone by, while you're still hunting for the initial. So my advice is to give yourself permission to not get it right. Don't focus on how your teachers will critique you later. Don't worry about being good or being right. Just work from your gut. If they have guidance, that will come AFTER the exercise, but it's important to not be in your head, critiquing yourself as you explore this freedom. I hope that helps!

It comes across as a very protracted critique at times to the uneducated in the exercise. But I appreciate the immediacy this is intended to bring forth. In Counselling there are a lot of techniques that remind me of this. Grounding being present and actively listening. In Counselling reflecting is often over used by trainees to the point it becomes Parrot fashion because they lack other skills to use in their repetoire. Parahprasing also springs to mind where you convey understanding of what a client has said by rewording what they have just said to you from your own perspective. This allows the client to either agree or disagree.

Does this cause people to be able to listen to others who they don’t practice with better as well, I wonder? I really wish I could find a buddy to practice this with. It is hard for me to imagine feeling more relaxed doing it. Perhaps after some practice. Thank you for posting.

Hi, Thank you for watching! This definitely should help you be more present and connected in every scenario, regardless of who you're working with. Some students have found success connecting virtually with partners via Reddit. That might be a good place to start!

Great Video!! Learned a lot! I have one question, how do we specifically apply the technique to film and when we are given a script? Very curious and thank you !

hi bruh, in film the most important quality is being present and truly listening as that camera captures false and BS every time so the technique is made for film and as far as how the technique applies to the script, it was actually created by sandy to do exactly that - can you work moment to moment from your gut not your head suing someone else's words? the answer is yes of course but it takes time to create this foundation of being a world-class listening and reactor - i hope this makes sense - jim

I remix some of the techniques I studied when I'm doing film. So obviously I prepare on my own and I do my own research into the history of the script. I look at the world of the characters and then the characters and then my character. When it comes to scene work, I incorporate some of the elements of the repetition exercises. My scene partner and I will sit across from each other and we will repeat the script back and forth, with no emotion. Then we'll do it again and let the words bring up a reaction. Then we each stay open and let the reaction drive the words. Then we review it in the context of the genre and back story of the script. I find that that builds trust with the other actor and you both come down to a common denominator in what you're doing.

It is good for comedy when they learn to do the tonality changes for act outs .

Is Svetlana responding honestly when she "gets offended" over him saying she got stuck? My response is she is "playing at" taking it personally, i.e. cocky laugh. You will see her relax into her true self with "I did think you were scared." I've seen this in the Meisner clips where he allows students to jerk each other around. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIGUf56oZtCWa9E. Why is this allowed to happen? I was taught to respond honestly and personally, but I see a lot of "extra stuff." Are we supposed to be playful in this way? Are the students so focused on taking things personally that they automatically turn possible offensive comments into actual offenses? Thank you for these videos they are enlightening.
