Many people mentioned hospitality and helpfulness. In four years living in Turkey, I was probably helped by strangers 30 or 40 times, for no reason other than kindness and hospitality. People really went out of their way to help. I also think the way Turkish people look after each other's children and show kindness to children and to elderly strangers is a beautiful part of the culture.

I'm a spaniard and I find some of those things super funny. First, that topic of watching constructions for no reason is is something that we joke about a lot, because it is a typical spanish grandpa thing. We even say something like "you are there looking at the constructions like old men" (estás ahí mirando las obras como los viejos) when someone is being lazy at work or mooning. Also, we think about ourselves that we are the loudest people on earth, even more when we are abroad 😂

Not only they are watching the construction site but they sometimes give an advice to the workers. They like supervising ! 😂

I ended up dating this amazing guy from Turkey and he treated me like a queen… sadly he moved home but I will never forget the summer love we shared ♥️

Bir yabancı olarak: en Türkiye Türklerin özellikleri çok marhemetli olması Türklerin başına ne gelmişse bu fazla marhemetden gelmiş hiç Türk hukumdarlar başka ülkeler gibi ırkçılık köle alış satışını gördünüz ya duydunuz mi? Hmm, soyle soyleyeyim, Osmanli araplarin baslattigi dogu Afrika ve Slavlarin yaptigi kuzey avrasya kole ticaretinden cok yararlanmistir zamaninda. Bizde irkcilik cok yoktur cunku kolelik irkla alakasizdir. Bizde herkes kole olabilir (eskiden en azindan, su anda normal olarak herkes kolelige karsi).

I think it's difficult for a Turkish citizen to say something that is very Turkish as they would have to compare themselves with other cultures, which is difficult within the country. I'll try to list the things I believe are very Turkish (please correct me if I'm wrong, it's up for discussion). Having lived outside Turkey, I can definitely notice the unique features. :) 1. Turkish people always say "Selam söyle", which would mean, "send my greetings/regards", at any possible moment, and I think this reflects how social and communicative they are in general, very talkative (they love using the mobile phone). 2. They are generally very family oriented, which comes together with their very care-taking warm personalities. 3. Hospitality and pickiness in quality of food, pleasure and comfort are very engraved in the culture. 4. Maybe a more negative trait would be that they would not easily admit not knowing something, and therefore it might appear like they act like they know everything, where in fact they just want to help people out, that is why they keep giving advice.. the phrase "akil vermek" comes to my mind. 5. Linked to that, there is a bit of privacy concern though, as they also like to interfere with a lot of things, it might as well be a family thing though, the phrase "maydanoz olmak" comes to my mind. So privacy invasion may be a concern sometimes. 6. There can also be lots of gossip and lots of drama, jealousy, which can be reflected by the Turkish series that are on TV. Discussion and argumentations are not always welcome and let's say people can get very irrationally "defensive". But from what I heard, Turkish schools do not have as much "bullying" as in western culture schools. 7. National pride (sometimes chauvinistically), hometown pride, loving Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (father of the fatherland), football fanatics... these are very Turkish features I'd say. 8. Although they might be proud of their own kind, they still generally love foreigners a lot and are very humane towards them, this shows also that they are quite humble. Sometimes to the extend that people are surprised.

Araba yada bisiklet sürerken arkadaşlarım olan birisi görürsem üstüne sürerim. If I see someone who has friends while I'm driving or biking, I drive the vehicle on the them. ( only touch). This is exist in only turkish culture.

Türkiye'ye hiç gitmedim ve gerçek dünyada bir Türk ile hiç tanışmadım. Tanıdığım Türkler ve sanırım bir tek ben değilim, dizilerdeki olanlar; karakter olduklarını bilsek de Türk'ü fizyonomisinden tanırız: genelde yakışıklı, sakallı, bıyıklı, romantik, bazen şiddetli. Sanırım Türk başka bir dilde konuşsa da lehçesinden tanıyabiliriz ama bu ona özel bir sey değil, aynı şekilde Amerikalıyı “r“ harfini telaffuzundan mesela, hatta Fransız veya İtalyan bile telaffuzundan tanıyabiliriz. Kesin bir şey değil ama benim bakış açım bu.

As a blonde woman I often get stupid remarks when I travel to tourist areas of Turkey by myself. So once I was in Istanbul metro going to the airport with a big suitcase, and this guy gets on the train, sits next to me and says in English: 'Let me help you, abla. I will hold your suitcase until I get off'. Omg, it was a random act of kindness but I could not relax as I was always used to impolite people. That was the moment when I started changing my opinion about Turkish people. Many years ago I had a Turkish online guy friend (not a boyfriend), and we laughed about many silly things, he was a very good friend. He even recorded his favourite songs on a CD and posted it to me all the way to England where I was a student at the time. Good memories! I recognise Turkish people when they click their tongue to say 'no' haha. I teach some Turkish students at university, they are all very polite.
