Hello, I would like know, how can I obtain the correct period between inspections?

This is a difficult question to answer in the limited space provided by KZbin. Nevertheless, here is my reply... 1) There are "rules of thumb" you can Google search for particular pieces of equipment: pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, etc. This is a good place to start or compare your current practices. 2) On an inspection, history can be your best guide. Look at the last 6 inspections and see if anything was noted by the craftsmen; if not add time to your frequency. This is true for PM and PdM. Example: move from 4 weeks to 6 weeks. 3) the best approach, yet very time consuming, is to conduct an FMEA on your critical equipment. Here you gain understanding of how equipment is likely to fail, repair times, and impact to the business. Unfortunately, this can easily take a week per piece of equipment. This process can take years if not decades to complete. Critical equipment selection is a process in itself. Look this up to on KZbin. Begin with your 20% most critical assets. 4) Impact of the inspection. If the impact has low cost and low impact on production, you may choose to have a short frequency. As you can see, the answer is complex. The key is to do something. Have a process supported by a cross-section of stakeholders, and seek to optimize your PM and PdM programs. You will make some mistakes, but I bet you will be right over 95% of the time. Don't become paralyzed by fear; this is where most organizations are. Good luck.

How do you sell the idea to the top direction of the plant to buy UE, IR or a rutine vibration inspections ? If in the budget you don’t have assigned for tools and courses.

Thank you for sharing such useful analysis of DIPF Curve. Just a quick question, are there any sort of analysis or calculations that can be made to specify inspection duration of mentioned technologies before any part gets damaged!! Thank you again

Sorry for delayed response; I actually thought I already responded to you. The short answer is YES, but it is time consuming. You can do SFMEA (Simplified Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) on every asset. This is where a team of people look at all possible failure modes and employs countermeasures to prevent occurrence or give early warning. PdM is used for early warning. The problem can be the number of assets you are trying to understand. If you have 500 assets all with 10 reasonable failure modes, this is 5000 failure modes to study and implement solutions. Most companies would die under this workload. My approach has been 3 fold... 1. Begin a SFMEA on your critical assets. Critical meaning high probability of occurrence and high business impact. You can calculate a number for this to prioritize assets. Google "asset criticality" 2. Just Start doing monthly PdM checks with as many technologies as you can (lube, vibe, IR, UE) 3. Autopsy each failure to see if frequency adjustment is necessary. Don't get paralyzed by only doing #1 above. Engineers are often perfectionist and can't "just start". Let me know if I can help more.

Michael Coleman thanks. I tried to find something like P-F curve for dummies to no avail. So, I decided to fill the gap myself.
