I’m a union ironworker here in the US, work on motorcycles and cars for hobby, and I used to always be trying out, buying and selling different watches waiting for the right one to come along. One day I bought a brand new Pelagos 39, that day was 2 years ago and the 39 has been on my wrist since. I’ve sold all my other watches, including my 36mm explorer and North Flag, and the 39mm Pelagos has been my “g-shock” essentially since then. Wear it to do everything, work, showers, sleep, it’s always on wrist, and I never worry about scratching it, it’s just along for the ride. Watch still looks great despite being well used and broken in. And I think the titanium looks great all distressed

My GADA would be the Formex Reef GMT, I guess. at least it already accompanies me more than my other pieces for a long time. Built sturdy, a unique design - and looking at the dial, indices etc. still makes me think "wow, what a nice watch". At the same time it is so changeable with the quick-features for strap and bezel. And I love that I can have the GMT but apply a diving bezel for everyday timing things - in fact, that is my configuration *all* the time. "This watch, that watch" recently found that they indeed should be pricier for what they are and I must say it packs a good punch, comparing it to my Longines HC which is still very good. Such a brilliant piece!

Great idea to do a video on the GADA watch. I am wearing my Khaki Field Auto 38mm as I watch this and agree it fits this category very well. One surprise here - no Omega Seamaster 300 or Diver. The AT was presented here, but I actually think it leans too dressy to be in this category and think James Bond had a right to some extent that the Seamaster Diver, 300, or Planet Ocean meet this category well. The most important criteria is to look at the dial and ask if it can look elegant at a swanky restautant and also in-place on a mountain hike. After that, sports style yes, also swimming pool proof so 100m WR please. As much as i love my Hamilton Khaki Automatic, a full dial of numbers doesnt make it dressy enough for the opera. That applies to the Aquanaut as well. FWIW I have one GADA in the box, from a minor Swiss brand called Epos. Fits in all the above and they do great dials. Nice vid, IDG.

And the more I've looked into it, I've learnt it has a 30m WR... one huge issue that they never addressed with this generation Aquanaut? Non-hacking seconds. It kinda goes against the whole "field watch" aesthetic in a way because they all defined themselves by having stop seconds (for obvious reasons) BUT saying that... still a freaking killer watch that none of us would pass on 😉🥃

For me its the older Aqua Terra Railmaster, I really see it as Omega's best GADA, an AT with a more minimal and sporty dial and hand set. The reference 2504.52 in the classic 36mm size being the best of them all. It's as if Omega made an Explorer.
@fixingbones5 ай бұрын
Gotta say this, a GADA watch should have a date function. The reason why I sold both my Explorer 1 and OP39. I know people may disagree, but a time only watch just doesn't work from me as a GADA watch. An Aqua Terra is GADA watch. For the same reason, the Daytona or Speedmaster Professional doesn't cut it either. A dive watch with a date is probably the best GADA out there. The 8500 and 8900 movement Omegas with their time zone function add even more functionality without complicating the dial. An AT or PO probably best of all. Take your pick, these two really are the toppers for GADA watches. The IWC Mk XX comes a close second. The strap changes are a plus but the time zone function absence leave Omega free and clear for me.

When travelling, it’s so great to have a watch that you just don’t have to worry about losing, that doesn’t make you a target (so, understated is important as well), and that you know will keep on ticking no matter the abuse you give it or the “roads” you travel. Love, love my Khaki Field Mechanical - just wish it had better lume! Prefer screw down crowns too, but I realize I’m pushing my luck on that one…

I recently got one. Black dial with the date. Wearing it on a NATO right now. Love the long power reserve. Wish it had internal anti-reflective coating. Apparently you can’t regulate it either although mine is keeping great time so not a problem

I have a Railmaster & it’s just perfect. I also have a Seamaster chronograph 9900. When fitted with the rubber strap it’s a great GADA watch as it is an absolute tank that can handle any environment. 🤓

My all-rounder is a prior generation (12+6 Arabics), blue dialed, Longines Conquest 41. As durable as they come, melding sporty and dressy details. Wear it for weeks at a time.

I recently acquired the 36mm newest explorer. The first time I saw it 6 months ago, it looked tiny. Then the BB54 became my second luxury my watch ever. First was sapphire speedy. I found myself loving the size of the 54, so then I decided to put myself on the list for the 36mm explorer. To my surprise I got a call only 2 weeks later. So now that I have it, I think it mostly covers everything here in the video except for price. It’s still a $7.2k USD watch, but design wise. It’s there. There’s the 40mm for those who prefer bigger. To me the 36mm is great and I have some minor scratches already from us, which well.. I suppose it is what it is. 😅 but honestly, I want to wear the thing everywhere. I think it even looks good on gym clothes haha

This is a great list Of course a ‘GADA’ watch will be different for different people. Office workers vs manual labourers vs sports people etc But overall considering the thousands of choices available I think this list is superb. My top 3 choices would be the 556, the Rolex op and the mark xx

I have the 42mm Longines Spirit and it is definitely a perfect GADA. I'm basically down to using just 4 pieces from my entire collection of 50+. The Longines, Hamilton Jazzmaster and Cooper and my latest favourite my SKXMOD modded Casio Royale which is another perfect GADA. I really need to start selling lots of pieces 😂

I‘m eyeing an IWC Pilot 36 right now. Already owning a Sinn 556i and Longines HydroConquest and Dolce Vita and a G-Shock I think I’m done - at least for today.

The 36mm's of theirs are so under the radar... I wish they'd promote (and produce) more up-to-date 37mm pieces in this category. It seems anything less than 39mm's and IWC steers clear from them 😆 Thank you for this! 🥃

Cartier Santos deserves a place on this list! Heritage, wearability, strap change, screw down crown the list goes on. Bracelet for when you’re out and about. 1 second to skap it on a strap for the evening. That said, I sold mine for the mark xx and havent really looked back😅

IDGuy, good video on what characteristics need to be considered to be a GADA watch. At 6:25 you do mention that size is one consideration, which gives me a question I wanted to ask you from a design point of view. Back in the day, a large watch was 36MM. What is your take on men's watches being 36MM versus 40MM? I am asking because I am playing mental ping-pong trying to make my decision. On one hand the 36MM looks fine on my wrist. Then I try on a 40MM and like it better. The point is do I like the 40MM better because of today's marketing, when the 36MM would work just as fine (and is less expensive)? I just wonder what your thoughts are from a design perspective.

It’s a great question Danny. It all boils down to personal choice and wrist size (obviously) My small collection goes from 36, 37, 38, 39, 41 & 42 (so all the bases covered) 😆 And I’ll say, the size should also factor in with the features of the watch. If it’s a diver? Slightly larger to legibly (same with a Chronograph) but as a time-only? I’d say 36-37 is never a bad call. Better balance on the dial, neater, more subtle wearing on the wrist. I do agree that marketing and the “modern” perception has skewed our opinions on watch sizes too. Fascinating question brother! Might even make a video on it 🥃

@@ID-Guy I would love to see you do a video on the subject from your unique design perspective. In the mean time, I appreciate you giving me "food for thought" in your response.

Thanks for the nice overview. What is the name of the Longines at 1:29. Couldn’t find at the homepage of Longines

The Mido Multifort TV Big Date in Grey or Blue seems like a great GADA watch. It’s practically an Aqua”Not” in style but still has its own design language and much lower price tag
