What is the Point of amiibo?

amiibo were fun yet quirky way to interact with your Nintendo games. But lately amiibo rewards don't seem worth the reason in purchasing them. Are amiibo even worth it anymore?

I’ve used a couple of the Zelda amibos for outfits in BOTW and TOK. Besides that, I don’t really care much about the in-game features. Merchandise of any Nintendo character that isn’t Mario is pretty rare so I’m glad we’re getting some characters in this form.

The 3DS games probably made better use of amiibo, but there were some wii u games that were very reliant on amiibo which I wish were a thing on the switch too. Even if those amiibo reliant game modes and such weren’t the best, it was still cool to get a new one and use it with the games you already had. I just wish there were more games where amiibo could give you something unique other than maybe just a few extra items. Games like Mario maker made it inclusive for all kinds of amiibo to give you a costume. Splatoon gave you access to some extra challenges and gear (plus a look at what splatfest would look like if they stopped doing them). If there was a consistent benefit across multiple gems every time you got an amiibo there’d be the incentive to get them, this is something the 3DS has done better than the switch and wii u in many areas. Amiibo cards for animal crossing are probably the closest we’ll get to that consistency for a while. They had a proper function and you could use them to get access to some cool items in new leaf as well (including some bonus mini games). The amiibo figurines would’ve been worth while if the animal crossing game on wii u wasn’t trash.

As someone who's been a fan of Kid Icarus since the 3ds game, having any sort of merchandise for them is a blessing. I know max factory and good smile made very detailed figures of Pit and Dark Pit but they are expensive and hard to find. I'll never forget when I found Palutina at a Toys R Us for $5. Pit I found at a Walmart and dark pit I had to order because he was sold out at Best Buy

Just to put an outside-US perspective. If amiibos costed equivalent to 15 of the money I'm from, I wouldn't complain. It's too cheap. 15 moneys in an average minimum wage of 7,5 moneys/hour like in the US, that's very good for a good quality collectible with a digital perk. Where I'm from the exchange rate and import taxes makes it become like 100 to 200 moneys for an amiibo in a country with a minimum wage also around 8 moneys/hour. While an US person needs to work 2 hours to buy an amiibo (or 4 hours for a scalper seller), which is less than 1 day of work, I have to work 12 to 24 hours to get enough for one amiibo. Thats insane. Be happy you get to buy them so cheap.

They should definitely add back the wolf link companion and outfits from other game based amiibo. I would love the sora character model and whole new improvements to link in both botw and totk. I especially want to see the champion’s leathers and more baggy versions of the hylian trousers. I just don’t like how rauru’s arm prevents link from customizing his arm clothing and not letting him wear right-hand gloves

Back in the day, using these in Smash Bros and training them felt super satisfying. Another game in which they were very useful was Mario Party 10, since you needed Amiibo’s to play Amiibo party. Besides that, they’re just collectibles now with few game functions. Yet, I do not regret buying the new Noah and Mio amiibo’s as a Xenoblade fan.

The toys to life idea is dead and amiibo are the only thing left that’s because they went from physical (basically impossible to get your hands on) DLC to basically impossible to get statues for shelves and I like that(I own all the TOTK amiibo and haven’t opened them)

The interesting thing about AMIBOs is that they could be used as a way to do microtransactions so that the microtransactions aren't locked to a server thereby letting people actually own what they buy in game rather than just renting it till the company shuts the servers off.

I never went out of my way to collect amiibos but I still ended up with 3 or 4 during the Wii U era. I never took them out of their packages. I had a coworker at the time who was real excited about them when they first came out, and was trying to collect all of them.

They are cheap well made figures (at least now lol). I'd wager 90% of the purchasers buy just to put them on a shelf or to display. Other companies are charging you similar cost for similar in game items so I'd pick Amiibo over the majority of modern day game bullshit.

I feel like Amiibo worked best when they started as a Nintendo's spin on the "Toys to Life" fad. Smash Bros is the only Amiibo game I know that pulls it off excellently. You can train your figure and bring them the figure(toy) to life on your friends console. Otherwise they're cool collectables at best, but at worst they feel like Physical Microtransactions that should be available to purchase digitally or available in game.

To me amiibos are mainly collectables at this point. But in my opinion i still find them as very fascinating figures for people to collect. Its just like any other collectables and its not better or worse than the others its just something to collect for one's benefit.

I don't know, I liked customizing my paraglider. The way I view it is amiibo are basically cheaper, smaller versions of full sized statues. For those of us that want statues, but don't have the money for $80 and higher statues, these well designed smaller versions that are roughly $15 are very welcome. At the end of the day, they're just something fun, and while I understand the desire for them to provide something more in game, just having a cool little collectable is just... Fun.

The purpose of amiibo is to have my favorite video game characters on my shelf - especially Smash Bros. characters that are unlikely to get their own merchandise otherwise (e.g. Ness, Lucas, Marth, Roy). They never needed to do anything else and I rarely used them for anything else.

A bit late on this, but worst part about XB3 amiibos is that they're not even exclusive? You can unlock them in the game by doing certain requirements. Noah being the hardest to unlock

The only way for amiibo to be successful is for Nintendo to release a Free Game download app and amiibos simply unlock a character to play as. It will be a third person adventure game where you play as that character and progress is saved directly on that amiibo. Gamers wouldn't complain as the game is free and unpaid and the only purchases would be in the functionality of the amiibo. Of course people will have NFC cards to bypass the figure and scanning route, but it would be something substantial.

I think the biggest problem with Amiibo is that every game has different functionality which makes it is nearly impossible for Nintendo to give Amiibo in-game value that validates buying them, but not too much so that it paywalls potentially important content

I always thought that amiibos were less about the in game rewards and more for the the figurines themselves. I do agree that they have less game value now than before. I think the best amiibo was Wolf Link when you used it with Twilight Princess HD on the Wii U. I think it gave you a new dungeon or something like that.

Amiibos are special because they carry important data and bonding memories. I use them with smash Brothers all the time.❤ Amiibos aren't just a figure, they are a feeling, they are a journey and you can grow attached to them. They are your friend.

I feel this might be controversial but i think we should have a nintendo toys to life game. One idea scott the woz had was hyrule warriors but with amiibo which could be a fun idea. My personal idea would be taking the best of the previous competition and fuse them into a game. Disney infinity's creative mode, lego dimension's sandbox world design and skylanders battle arena (as it was removed from trap team onwards and i miss it). Imagine exploring hyurle as mario or making a custom world with nintendo's many assets from their games. The portal design could be really cool to but after saying all this, this will probably never happen and that would be a shame.

Skylanders aka the one that started Toys To Life are more make plastic toys for games more useful than amiibos cause in Skylanders use play as the characters in the game but amiibos there just for random things like in Mario Odyssey getting outfits that you can also get from the store and in BOTW you can get tunics from past games but your better off with the champions tunic through out most of tbe game

I bought (almost) all of the Zelda Amiibo and a few Smash Bros Amiibo, but I truly haven't taken them out of their boxes and I don't really care for the perks of the Amiibo, like I bought Zelda Amiibo cards just to get the benefits of each of the Amiibo (including the ones I don't have) So I have to agree, they're mostly being collected for the figure itself rather than the benefits they give in my opinion

During the Wii U, Amiibo had to be very interesting, because it was something that was saving the company. Since I don't have room for that, I was never interested in that, except for the Wolf Link Amiibo for BotW (but still didn't buy it). I only bought Toon Link and started to use it with Ultimate. Nintendo isn't interested with it anymore

Some people might have the opinion that it's pay to win to have Amiibos make you better and stronger in game. Certain games that I've played the community has almost rioted trying to make sure that you can't pay to help you in game and you can only pay for cosmetics. Like a new outfit or paraglider. Which I guarantee there's people out there that are siked about that paraglider. So people will pay litterally thousands just for one cosmetic change on your gear in a game. So there 100% are people that are completely happy buying a Amiibo to get a new glider

I disagree. I think many modern uses for amiibo are much better than how they were originally used. I think it's fun to have the rewards be cosmetics that don't give any real advantage but still relate to the character you scanned (such as the paraglider designs or the Xenoblade 3 outfits) and I think it's also good when the rewards can still be obtained without the amiibo as to prevent locking content behind potentially difficult to find pieces of plastic. It may take away from the exclusivity of the rewards but I feel like that's much more acceptable than locking potentially major content behind them such as with Samus Returns. Also about the Noah and Mio amiibo functionality... I really don't see your point. Yes you get the same design outfits from characters in the game, but I think that's a really cool reward? I wouldn't complain about BotW and TotK giving you the outfits of previous Links just because those are character designs they've already made. It's just cool items to have that are fitting for the characters you get them from.

I ordered a complete set of amiiibo coins from Ebay for less than $30. They always have either the coins or the cards for sale. I would NEVER spend a fortune collecting the actual figures!

Amiibos had such great potential to be something really special but they basically just serve as figurines to put on your shelf. I actually would love an excuse to buy them but it just seem pointless. I own one: Mr Game & Watch. He's cute.

I’ve waited almost a year for a restock of the Pyra and Mythra amiibo and they never came, so for my birthday my parents opted the scalper price. Nintendo should just flood the market with amiibo so anyone can get one at any time, and push the scalping price down.
