What Is the Proper Way to Cinch a Saddle?

You forgot to mention that most horses hold their breath when a saddle is being cinched up. So after you do what this video shows, wait a few minutes and then tighten up the cinch again before you actually mount the horse.

(You could also poke their belly to make them release their breath, then tighten the cinch)

THANK YOU!!!! I've been riding western all my life, and recently i've been catching heat for doing the "necktie" knot with my latigo when i'm done tightening the saddle. A lot of folks are now going to just pushing the tongue of the cinch ring through the hole on the latigo, and that's it. That looks absolutely frightening to me, i feel uncomfortable enough with that arrangement on the off side of the saddle. I take the extra latigo after doing my necktie knot, and run it through the latigo keeper. I'm all for safety, safety, safety. I was injured pretty severely once in a horse wreck, where everything had been done right except for one thing.....the wrangler at the livery my horse came out of adjusted the stirrups and slapped the leathers when he was finished. I saw my mount arch his back, and i knew i was in for one heck of a ride that day. I could have strangled the wrangler, AFTER the 5 years or so it took for me to recover from my injuries. Never, ever let anyone else do your job when it comes to saddling up. Learn your horse's quirks and be responsible for your own safety.

This does create a lump under the fender which may or may not cause some discomfort for the rider and communication issues with your horse.

You can use a cinche buckle instead of the knot. the excess goes in the front keeper

@@thealliewest Actually it does matter, the loopy thing this lady does creates quite a bit of bulk on the side which digs into the horse. she should really loop it only twice and then put the buckle through the hole and then slip it through the latigo holder

@sketchalater the knot does not dig into the horses side . It’s flat and the saddle pad is under it also . The buckle if done improperly can actually cause a more dangerous hazard and dig into the horses side . If the horse were to be uncomfortable with either the knot or buckle it would definitely let you know by body language.

You should NEVER - EVER connect the breast collar or rear cinch before the front cinch is tied. NEVER.

You should never triple or double cinch if so you are are relying on the cinch and not your balance
