What is the Punishment of Thieves? 3/20 | Morality by Muhammad Shaikh
In Islam, the idea of "cutting off a thief’s hand" is often understood literally, but it can also be seen in a symbolic way. Instead of physically cutting hands, it can mean stopping the thief from continuing their bad actions and breaking their connections with harmful influences or people.
This way of thinking focuses on helping the thief change their life. It involves removing the bad influences or situations that led them to steal. Islam teaches forgiveness and kindness, so this approach gives the person a chance to repent, improve themselves, and become a better part of society.
By focusing on cutting harmful connections and helping the thief, this understanding supports the Islamic values of fairness, kindness, and mercy while still promoting justice and protecting society.
Muhammad Shaikh, a renowned speaker, has provided a clear and insightful explanation of the concept of "cutting hands" of thieves in Islam. He emphasizes its symbolic meaning, focusing on breaking harmful connections and guiding individuals toward reform and repentance, aligning with Islam’s principles of justice, mercy, and fairness.

Allah's book is divided into two types of Ayats. Those which orders to govern our selves are collectively known as At-Taurah / The Law. And others which are repeatedly describing events of all the prophets are Mutashabehat / resembling ayats. These events are so true & real source of guidance for those who fear Allah.

Assalamu alaikum. Since childhood, I had heard that the punishment for theft is cutting off the hand, and this punishment is legally practiced in many Islamic countries. Brother Muhammad Sheikh explained in his lecture, using many Quranic verses, that Allah has mentioned this in the Quran in a metaphorical sense, which needs to be understood. I have now come to understand that cutting off the thief's hand means cutting off all the means and resources that facilitate theft. If the person reforms, Allah turns towards him. Indeed, Allah makes whoever He wants understand. I am grateful to Allah for giving me the opportunity to understand this through Brother Muhammad Sheikh. May Allah reward you with goodness, brother. May Allah keep you safe and grant you a healthy life, Insha'Allah, Ameen.

“cutting off hands” is metaphorical, not physical. It means cutting off the thief’s contacts, connections, and resources that enable theft. This is further clarified from narration related to Yusuf (PBUH) and the wife of Aziz.

I have come to know from this video that the term "cutting off the hand" is used metaphorically in the Holy Quran in reference to male and female thieves, which means to cut off the ties and connections of the thief that lead to theft, so that they can reform themselves and justice is established in society. This also explains the incident of Joseph (peace be upon him) how the women cut off their hands, which was not physical but was used metaphorically as in the verse Al-Ma'idah 5:38 Jazak Allah brother Muhammad Sheikh Sahib

Surah 5, Ayahs 38 and 39: The command is to cut off the hands of both the male thief and the female thief. However, in the same verse, Allah clarifies that if they repent and reform, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Here, the cutting of hands is not physically but metaphorically, as a directive to eliminate the means and causes that lead to theft. For further clarification, the example of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph, peace be upon him) and the wife of Aziz provides an excellent explanation of the concept of "cutting hands." The women who misjudged Prophet Yusuf's character metaphorically "cut their hands," signifying the removal of their wrongful thoughts and misconceptions about Hazrat Yousaf PBUH. I believe and submit that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful to those who repent and reform. Muhammad Sheikh’s clip provides an excellent explanation of this concept, which helps in preventing actions that go against the principles of Islam/Peace.

Another Ethical/Moral principle explained in ayats is the punishment of thieves, though it is not clearly understood and being practiced physically by people. Cutting off hands of thieves (men & women) is used metaphorically in Al-Kitab and is not physical as their repentance/corrections after oppression/wrongdoings is accepted/forgiven by Allah. The incident/narration relating with Prophet Yousuf pbuh, when some city women backed off from charging him in infatuated Aziz’s wife in his love. On seeing Yousuf pbuh the women immediately greatened him and “cut their hands” (regretted on the false charge they had made earlier), substantiates metaphorical use of the phrase. Jazakallah Br Shaikh

In Islam, theft is a serious crime with the punishment of hand amputation ( metaphorically: means to cut this persons’ ties with the world), as stated in Surah Al-Ma'idah. However, this applies only under strict conditions, such as clear evidence and a certain value of stolen goods. Islam emphasizes justice but also encourages repentance and mercy.

Cutting off hands is used as a metaphorical example. It means to cut off the connections and resources for a thief so he cannot commit the act again.

In this lecture we discus that what to do with theif in surah Maidaa 38:39 define cutting hands of theif here the scense is higlighted about cutting resources and connections rather than cutting hand physically. Also this cutting hand in metaphorically scens in surah yousuf 12:21 define that the man in the egypt whoes wife adopt yousuf and take care of him and when she consider mischief with him he refused further in 12:32 ayat women refused that she put wrong charge on yousuf we cut off what she claimed here they cut their hand mataphorically.

According to the verses, if a thief commits theft and if he repents, then Allah is not commanding to cut off his physical hand, but to cut off his planning contact so that he cannot steal in the future.

There is an incident in the Al-Quran about cutting the hand of thieves that is metaphorical, that people take in the literal sense, the actual meaning is they correct their actions and are forgiven by Allah. The incident in the Al-Quran is about Yousef PBUH where the ladies put a charge on him believing that he was involved with wife of Aziz. The false charge they put on Yousef PBUH was taken back (the cutting of the hands) after regretting it.

My misconception got cleared in this clip. Previously the concept I got from people is the Yusuf PBUH was so beautiful that women’s got mesmerised and unknowingly cut their own hands. I understood that women are pleasing to eye and not man. Cutting off hands is an expression. An individual realising for what wrong he had said or done.

Cutting off the hands of thieves as an exemplary punishment is taken as Physical or literal sense when it's actually a metaphorical sense which means to cut off the means through which stealing is done or cut off connections. Further if after their oppression they repent & corrected, Allah will turn to them. Cutting off hands is also mentioned in the event of Yusuf PBUH with the ladies, here the sense is of metaphor nature. Which is obvious when ladies initially charge Yusuf PBUH & then retract from it, that is Cutting off the hands. By the way, cutting off both hands for any person themselves is physically impossible.
