I’ve been vegetarian, fruitarian, vegan ... you name it. Neither made me any more spiritual than I already am. None of those diets made me healthier than eating in balance .Everything is energy and has life. Some humans only identify animals having life. A tree once asked ... Have you ever witnessed a tree being cut down/ and tortured surrounded by his family and then made into the house you live in? I respect everything I eat and I don’t put labels on how I eat. If you want a healthy body, eat the best way for your blood type. Observe how you feel. Proceed from there with consciousness for a healthy body. Do not over eat. A true spiritualist knows that we are already spirit and we are connected to the body that houses it. When the spirit is released from the body, the spirit does not identify as vegan or vegetarian. It’s way beyond that. I am so confused as to how far we have strayed from knowing that.
@jbarber1016

Eating to reduce suffering isn't about you and it isn't about "spirituality". It's about not creating suffering. You are the one making things complicated. Trees don't have a brain or a nervous system, they don't feel physical pain as an animal with a nervous system does. Also, the blood type diet has been thoroughly identified as pseudo science.

In Eckarts teachings about the pain body I remember him explaining how pain has a energy frequency that can move between beings. It seems reasonable to me to presume eating the flesh of an animal who died in fear and lived a life where it was treated cruelly etc which sadly does happen frequently may transport pain into our bodies when we eat that flesh containing the same frequency

Thank you for this. I was a strict vegan for 6 years and a vegetarian for a few years before that. And yes I know about food macros, micronutrients and how to balance those in a vegan diet. But it still wrecked my body, health and digestion. I am now fully bedbound from how unwell I have become - because veganism did not work well whilst also trying to live with severe chronic illness. I was stuck in the egoic belief that my veganism made me a better person as an identity. I became more ill than was necessary because of this. I won't go into gory detail but I mean extreme pain, nausea, bleeding, gut dysbiosis, nutrient malabsorbtion etc. I dislike that I need to eat meat but try to think of it in the same way as other animals who have to eat flesh - an amoral act not based on choice but on survival. As humans we need to improve welfare standards and practices and eliminate some practices like factory farming. But we can never eradicate animal eating altogether because a substantial subgroup of people can't thrive or survive on a vegan diet due to illnesses, disabilities or similar. We must have compassion and understanding of that too and just do what we can to relieve suffering. I believe animal rearing can be a somewhat mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship where we offer them food, shelter and healthcare.

For me, poor digestion is the greatest impediment to spiritual growth, so I TRY to only consume foods that digest well, which, interestingly, includes lean meat (beef, poultry and fish). I appreciate Eckhart's measured and insightful response.

@@192837qwert The thing with Tolle's food choice is quite clear - unlike most of his supporters, and unlike most of humanity, he is quite aware of the suffering that non-human animals go through in order to be served as food to human animals. That being said, his referral to presence and "your body will know what you need' is nothing more than a lame excuse to continue living egotistically, ignoring the suffering of helpless sentient beings. Animals that are being killed, either by hammer, or in gas chambers, or by being smashed against the ground, also experience presence - the terror of presence, to be more precise. The fact that the nicely packed piece of meat on a shelf of the supermarket once was a sentient being, bred in unspeakable conditions, terrified, helpless and died in agony - that fact doesn't bother the spiritual teacher.

Today my body tells me to eat vegetables only, but listenting to ur body on the next day saying it wants some dairy or a litlte bit of good meat, but u refuse to urself because u think u can't break the deal u made with some people's groups. That's giving the ego power, giving it room to express itself. Because i don't eat like those 'uncultred swines', i belong to those groups. I sympathise myself with mostly those people, is just difficult. Spiritual teacher who doesn't eat meat, but get to come into a company of other people eating meat and offering it to them, they eat it. Out of respect and calmness, u can be thankful for every thing u eat. U can be thankful for the animal that died, for the vegetable that died. And still be a human beingliving life and be as good as the other thats all. Eckhart especially did not say what he means in rules, but peoole here express their ego by saying. This does not mean that you cannot draw a lot of good energy from eating from an animal that has lived a proper life the wild.

The one that comes from the natural sun, like vegetables and even animals that lived freely and died peacefully or from animals that lived their entire lives being beaten and in a tiny little space eating processed foods and not grass? Many are confused about morality and spirituality. It’s not more or less moral to eat an animal or piece of lettuce or a fruit or whatever. Everything is alive and has its own level of consciousness. Just because you don’t see eyes and ears on a tree or a vegetable, doesn’t mean it isn’t a living organism. Morality is about how we treat our food resources. In fact, to build an ideology of what one should or shouldn’t eat, is just another form of judgmental behaviour and identification on a specific form (of thought). Even feeling “more spiritual” cause of dietary choices is just an ego-identity attachment like any other kind of attachment. To slay an animal or cut a flower just for the “fun” of it, or throw away food, now that’s something to reconsider…. Even insects, instead of killing that bee which came into your house, just let it go out again…

Ironically, the way Eckhart thinks about this is ego driven in its own way, even if done so inadvertently. Unfortunately, thinking about food choices in terms of “me, me, me” is ignoring the ethical and environmental repercussions of those choices. Wouldn’t it also make sense to think of it from the perspective of the animals (victims) we eat, especially those in factory farms? Animal agriculture is a leading cause of deforestation, ocean dead zones, zoonotic disease, antibiotic resistance, and suffering. We often approach this from a very anthropocentric place, which seems egotistical in some way or another. Animals don’t care how “present” we are if we’re eating food that results in their subjugation and suffering. The largest dietetics associations in the US AND UK have confirmed that a plant based diet is suitable for all stages of life from infancy to adulthood. You don’t need steak if you’re eating a variety of greens, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, etc.

Eckhart is a hero to me. Here, we slightly diverge, but that's ok. I still have the utmost respect, and he's not advocating for anything in particular. And I agree that bringing conscious presence to food is so important. However, no amount of presence or inner searching will tell you about optimum nutrition or the realities of agriculture. Just like no amount of presence or inner searching could tell Eckhart that Hitler was infact not a vegetarian. You can fact check this. And even if he was, following vegetarianism still pays for animal slaughter and exploitation, so is ethically similar to an omnivorous diet. Eckhart is a conscious and kind man and would probably have a different tone if he watched Dominion (free on KZbin). He is right, you can egoically identify with any diet choice. You can be tribal about even the most ethical choices. But that still doesn't mean they aren't more ethical choices. You can also choose ethically and not egoically identify with it. If you educate yourself on the science of nutrition, the realities of agriculture, AND bring presence to the whole process, then I agree, you will then be full empowered. Peace to you all :)

So many opinions on this subject, so many people THINKING they know the truth, they know what is GOOD, so many people BELIEVING that they have it all figure out and that so many are just MONSTERS because they eat CADAVER. It's ok to do what you FEEL is the right pass, and you have to UNDERSTAND with your MIND, SOUL or whatever that you canot control other people behaviors and telling them that they are killers, immoral or whatever will only strengthen your and their EGO because when you are attacked, on WHO you THINK you are, you defend yourself, you dont go around saying YES your are right I am a monster, for the mind it is too much too deal with to transform the reality it has created to see that what he did was BAD, and again it is only a matter of perception, it is your truth, your body, your experience. For example, some people cannot handle the sun because of a desease or because they are redhead ... and some can stay as long as they please under it, and feel awesome because they have darker skin for instance. Does It means the sun is bad or that it is good ? NOT AT ALL, it means we are all unique and different and even if we have a part of ourselves that is the same, we are also made differents, and that is the beauty of the world, so there is no point on pushing your way of thinking, eating, living or whatever because you cannot change others and we are ALL UNIQUE what is good for you could be the worst things for another. If you feed a newborn fruits it will not live, if you feed a lion vegetable, the same. Suffering is part of this world, wether you like it or not, and it is something bad only if you believe that it is. And if you are spiritual you know that life isn't the end, so there is not point to feel so bad because a life as ended (that doesn't means that you should do it again, it depends on your consciousness body...) When you are on the spiritual path what you feel for other is love and compassion, not judgement or dismay. For the reccord I am far from being perfect, I'm still on the ego side most of the time and I now it because that's what I feel when I read those comments HAHA even so I know deep down that people and I are just triggered.

I became vegan 6 years ago for health reasons, then after further study realized it wasn't necessary for optimal health, but you can be vegan and optimally healthy if you do it well (without junk). I stayed vegan because I felt a) I was used to it by then, and b) why not if it was potentially having positive effects for the environment and other animals? But I would never tell anyone else they should eat the way I do, I think everyone has a right to do what they feel is right for them. My main issue now is eating "mindfully." I find that I eat based on what I think should fill me up, and I have this psychological fear of getting hungry, especially at night because I don't eat after 7pm. But it's really silly because when I do get hungry during the day, I'm not always able to go to the fridge and eat something, so I just stay hungry for a little bit and then the hunger goes away, no big deal. For some reason at night it seems more important that I get "extra full" in order to prevent this, and this basically just makes me feel uncomfortable right up until bedtime. So I'm working on this and trying to cut that dinner portion down as much as I'm able to, but it's a tricky thing. I'm so good at controlling portions and how healthfully I eat (no junk) throughout the day, but that last meal just trips me up more times than not!

I can imagine a cannibal psychopath listening to this and feeling reassured that, as long as they are present in the choices they make, all is good. Don't the consequences of our choices matter - for the suffering and death of others, human and non-human?

I think you can be present but same time not conscious. On a higher conscious level you'll feel the consequences before they acure. Of couse that psychopath will feel no guilt because he's totally present but operating from a level of the mind and intellect not on the level of heart intelligence . Thats psycho lacks connection to his surrounding and has no empathy. Hope you understand what I try to explain.
@Sentientism

@@Gwenny89 I agree that "presence" isn't enough. We need to be conscious of the consequences of our actions and have empathy - but more importantly compassion, for those impacted. For me, that implies a complete boycott of any sentient animal agriculture. That seems an obvious implication of even a minimal compassion. Yet Eckhart doesn't mention that option - he focuses only on presence. That's an odd echo of those who claim that our "free choice" is more important than the victims of those choices.

Pauline, I have noticed this idea in everything, which leads me to conclude that our thoughts and beliefs create our reality. You should become vegan - countless doctors have said that our bodies aren't optimized to consume animal products - and science suggests that physiologically and anatomically we are pretty much herbivores. Makes sense because we evolved from primates - monkeys, chimps etc. who are pretty much pure vegans except for eating a few insects now and then.

The fact that we get most of our fruits from starving, malnourished, impoverished places, causes suffering to millions of human beings. There is a video interviewing beautiful people of Guatemala that say they are forced to live off of corn tortillas and sometimes rice, because they mass farm their fruit and take away their natural resources for food so that way us in America can eat fruit. The children there are all chronically malnourished. That to me is contributing to suffering.. I think supporting local farms and releasing our own self righteousness on what we need to thrive as humans is the best way to not contribute to suffering as much as possible.

I used to eat 200g of cheap meat for lunch and dinner everyday so 14 times a week (along with carbs, fruits, veggies,etc) thinking I needed the protein. After a semi-awakening, I stopped trusting various sources that pushed this belief and ate intuitively. Naturally I didn’t feel the need to eat so much meat, opting for lentils, chickpeas, beans, eggs and milk primarily for protein. I have more muscle than ever before and have so much more energy but I believe it’s true that one must first feel that they can do this diet. If I started eating this way back then I would’ve probably thought I was protein-deficient which would’ve manifested in reality. I still eat chicken occasionally and other meat products more rarely when the feeling arises that I should consume them. It went from 3 meals a week to around 1/2 now.

Diet in spirituality has less to do with ahimsa and more to do with yogic and ayurvedic theory in which meat, eggs and certain spices (namely: nightshades, garlic/onions/other allium family herbs) are avoided because of the way they affect spiritual energy in the body and also how they affect the mind states or "gunas" according to these systems. It is usually advised to eat foods that promote "sattva guna" (balance/clarity/purity) rather than "rajas" (activity) and "tamas" (passivity). In my own experience the Sattvic diet as it is called, does make a significant difference but you have to adhere to it for several weeks or months to reach its full effect. Most vegetables, grains, seeds, nuts, fruits, and some dairy products are sattvic. Many spices are rajasic but some are sattvic such as ginger, fennel, cinnamon, coriander, turmeric, basil etc. There are also many medicinal plants that promote sattva guna as well such as ashwagandha, tulsi, gotu kola, bacopa, shatavari, and many others.
