They are employing a different strategy known as 'consuming and weakening.' This approach is intentionally slow and arduous, causing the opposing side to exhaust all their resources to try and close the gap, while the true intention is simply to wear them down gradually. Such tactics can be considered deceitful.

I’m now reaching a point where, despite supporting Ukraine, I want to yell at the Russians, “Oh, for the love of God, will you please just take the goddamn town already?! It’s been MONTHS! And you still claim that you will then go on to take Berlin?!” I suspect that even the Ukrainians are stunned at how sluggishly the Russians are advancing, and even then only with very high casualties. This kind of strategy is NOT sustainable. Attritional warfare goes BOTH ways, and it is usually the attacker who bleeds more. I personally believe that the actual German strategy at the Battle of Verdun in World War 1 was NOT attrition, and that the German commanders lied about it after the war to cover their own mistakes.

I came to the same conclusions around February 7th. And the reason is simple. Russia wants to secure logistics, which means the big roads and railways. That means bridges. Russia is also trying several smaller encirclements all along the front, just look at the small bulges they've slowly created as they push into Ukraine held territory. So look at the points of attack, follow the roads, locate the bridges and you quickly find the towns they intend to envelop or attack head on. They follow the exact same patter from north to south along the frontline

Slowjansk and Kramatorsk has always been their targets. They had to give that up after losing Lyman and IIsjum, but before that happend, those cities had always been the next target. So this isn't even something new. Go back to the time when Russia was still on the offensive in early 2022. Especially after abandoning their attack on Kiev. Everybody was talking about them shifting focus on Slowjansk and Kramatorsk. Those two cities have been their main target since last late spring. Back then it would also have allowed them to secure the southern road to Charkiw. Except now Charkiw isn't even remotely close to being in their hands anymore. I'd say for now it's less about operational logistics and more about trying to get the rest of Donezk oblast and then calling it a day. Annexing the entire Donezk oblast is the most they can hope to still get out of this anyway. They have lost their ability for operational deep maneuvers.
@JoeyMace28
@JoeyMace28 Жыл бұрын
@@LeutnantJoker This is very true. The de facto capital of Donetsk is Kramatorsk anyway, so in order for Russia to "gain control" over all of Donbas, they would need to take both Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. As that was one of their objectives since day one, and still is.
@seancarroll9849

@@LeutnantJoker Even then, there is this persnicketty thing about recognized national boundaries. Russia will have no choice but to continue because no one is really buying their bridge. Almost no one recognizes Russia's annexation of the regions. I've said this on Day One. "Interesting game. The only winning move is not to play." Putin has gambled, and he has lost more than he realizes even if he calls it a day.

@@brandonlyon730 Yep. And there was already widespread discontent and resentment against the Romanovs even before 1914. Nicholas II and his ministers had bungled and blundered throughout the man's reign, and losing the Russo-Japanese War really didn't help. Unfortunately, the same is probably not the case in today's Russia; the majority of the Russian population are depoliticized, passive, and all but non-responsive to the actions and decisions of the Kremlin. The minority who are anti-war are being silenced, crushed and suppressed, and the minority who are pro-war are unfortunately the ones who seem to be gaining the most traction and momentum in Russia, becoming more and more bold in criticizing the Russian military, the Kremlin and even Putin himself. I honestly don't think that a full-scale revolution against the Kremlin is going to occur any time soon, though in my opinion there may be an increasing likelihood of civil war breaking out in Russia due to multiple factions and individuals gaining and building their own private armies (Prigozhin and Shoigu being the most prominent among them)

Dictatorships are actually poor conquerors because the entire institution is built to keep the status quo for those in power and prevent popular uprisings. Expansion requires a uniting force that prizes skill and competence over only loyalty (mind you loyalty is important but it’s a different kind of loyalty). Putin has loyal but corrupt and incompetent generals and subordinates. Great if you’re trying to keep a disloyal population in check, but not conquering and incorporating new lands. Just my thoughts.

Bradley is right. The Russian can not pull it off because once a supply train is put together it has to get from point A to Point B and that involves too many people. Russian are know thieves ,and plunders doesn't matter it is their own. It is all about me and mine. It is stolen by senior people in the chain of command, be it civilian or military. Mostly by its own people. That is one of the big reasons they do not have sergeants to help stop the plunder and theft, they as a race are corrupt.

According to Vlad Vexler, Putin doesn’t even use the Internet; he does not own a smart phone or a tablet, and instead of going online himself, he has his aides make printouts of screenshots and put them in folders for him to view later. Putin is highly paranoid about the Internet, and sees it as a tool of American manipulation and propaganda. He sees America everywhere, to a point where he doesn’t even believe that there is such a thing as an independent country; to him, everyone is either Russia’s puppet or America’s puppet. We need to keep in mind that he was raised in the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

It has been alleged that there is an entire ‘online-bot’ industry in Russia (including at least one facility in St Petersburg). According to Vlad Vexler (if you haven’t seen his KZbin videos, I highly recommend them), Russian propaganda is NOT meant to make you believe what it says. Instead, it is meant to “wear you down”; to make you tired of the constant and obvious B.S. and to make you not want to care. Whether it is online comments or Russian state TV or the Kremlin making constant claims, threats, etc to other countries, Russian propaganda aims to make us weary and tired of dealing with the whole thing, hoping that we would eventually just want to distance ourselves from it, lose interest, and eventually stop supporting Ukraine. It’s like a person who repeatedly keeps denying what you know to be a very obvious fact (such as insisting over and over that the Earth is flat, not round). The person KNOWS that what he is saying is B.S., and he knows that you know. But he keeps it up because he hopes that eventually you’ll just get tired and ‘concede defeat’ to him. The comments supporting Russia and making claims that are very obviously false and/or unproven? The comments that keep trying to evade the subject of the Russo-Ukraine War and bring up the crimes and dubious actions of other countries? That is how Russian propaganda works. And according to Vexler, it has been very effective in Russia; the majority of Russian people are depoliticised and unwilling to be invested in politics.

@CMY187

@@Onezy05 Unfortunately, I don’t think that many Russians are going to acknowledge defeat after the war. Instead, it may become like after World War One, in which it became a commonly-held belief in Germany that the German military was not defeated and was actually winning, that the German government, influenced and manipulated by ‘Jews’ and ‘Communists’, betrayed the military and ‘stabbed it in the back’. The German leadership in WW1 was awful, and the government’s managing of the country after the war was abysmal. And we know what faction was able to take advantage of that to rise to power. In my opinion, we cannot allow the same to happen in Russia; the Putin regime collapsing only to be replaced with something that is even worse. Russia CAN become a true democracy. We must never lose hope that it can. If Germany and Japan were able to transform, I don’t see why Russia couldn’t. It may take years, even decades, but it can happen.

I just don't think Russia has enough QUALITY troops or equipment remaining to mount such a large offensive, even with the large numbers of mobilized 'reserves', whose training has been subpar. Given the Ukrainians surprising performance for defensive warfare and guerilla-style counteroffensives (such as the Battle for Kyiv) the Russians would be hard-pressed to successfully mount ONE of these thrusts, let alone several. In fact, though they might (and I stress 'might') take Bakhmut, it'll most likely be pyrrhic victory that the Ukrainians will probably be able to exploit in a later counteroffensive once they get new tanks such as the Leopard 2.

From my experience with 7th Corps, long ago, I look at operations in bursts of human energy. Whether on offense or defense people and units preform great for about 72 hours. After that all your basic load of supplies is gone. People are sleep deprived and start making big mistakes. Things that were running fine, start to break, increasing requirements of logistical flexibility and equipment endurance. People turn into zombies. Add cold weather, inadequate food and important vehicles breaking down. (and 10% casualties) Any Russian offensive will need to factor in that assault units will only function for 3-5 days and will then cease to be mission capable. Which would be perfect for a UAF counter attack.

Russian forces will get their hands on bakhmut the next days if not hours with speed pace the progressing. Capture of bakhmut will change the war narrative and odds will become favorable for russian to win it. Simply because of bakhmut railway connect the south with the north and east with west making it easier for russian forces to supply all the frontlines. Logistics was the russian forces first enemy and was the reason why the failed at the beginning. But now by securing bakhmut, the spring offensive gonna be much easier for russian forces that they can open multiple frontlines without worrying abt the logistics.

You NEED foot soldiers to accompany the tanks. You know all those movies we see of massive tank battles? Yeah, no. Tanks have to be supported by infantry, otherwise you’re just sending them to their deaths. Fundamentally the Russians may have underestimated the difficulty in closing off supply lines to Bakhmut, but have only moved the entire front by a few 100m any way, into previous grey zones that are more vulnerable to artillery fires. This just proves that the military aid that will be sent to Ukraine soon should not come any later than this planned Russian attack will last. Also shows that Ukraine is still in need of more aid, and soon.

We really need a statistic about how many soldiers die for one square km gained. The cost, even if Ru only takes Donetzk Oblast, will be mind blowing high.

Watching this war play out seems like Putin read a book about Hitler's WW2 wins and losses against the Soviets, and tried to recreate the losses on himself.

I don't know if this is an appropriate comparison, but the whole geopolitical set up of this conflict, to me at least, bares some similarities to the Japan-China conflict of the 1930's. The aggressor began by taking over certain border territory (Crimea/Manchuria) and there was then an absence of direct conflict between the nations for several years before a full scale invasion was launched, only for the aggressor to become bogged down. Sure, there are TONS of differences (size of nations, political instability) but the initial framework is strikingly similar.

It is possible to find similarities in any 2 events. To me, it seems that you are making this comparison because you think it will lead to a global conflict. And I reject this possibility.

@@KingsandGenerals That was one of the differences I meant to mention. Obviously, Japan's invasion was halted in the long term not just by Chinese resistance, but by the ensuing global conflict with the Allies of WW2. I also doubt that this will become a global conflict, due to changes in approach to geopolitical affairs and military conflict since WW2 (though if history's taught me anything, it's 'never say never') I get your point - there will always be some parallels between historical events, but every event has its own unique circumstances. The past is not always a reliable indicator for the future. Btw, great video! 👍

I don’t know much about the Sino-Japanese War, but parts of the Russian army fought against the Ukrainian army since 2014, even during the proxy conflict in eastern Ukraine. The peak of involvement occurred during the battles for Debaltseve in 2015.

@@user-wm5rt9pw5l Yes you're right, there was still conflict, but not a full invasion of the nation by Russia as happened last year. I saw it as somewhat similar to the period between the Japanese occupation of Manchuria and the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. There was still conflict in the region (Japan attacking the Great Wall region, the attempted setting up of collaborationist states along the border), but a full scale invasion was only launched by Japan following the Marco Polo Bridge Incident.

Russia's major offensive is ongoing RIGHT NOW. Vuhledar was one of their main targets, but, like always, they fail miserably.

In my opinion, Russia MIGHT achieve a breakthrough in the Ukrainian lines, but exploiting that breakthrough and widening the gap is another matter entirely, never mind achieving two breakthroughs and swinging to link up and thus encircle an enemy force. In the Battle of Stalingrad outside the city, something similar happened for the Axis; Paulus’ 6th Army was trying to advance east, while Hoth’s 4th Panzer army was trying to move north to link up with him and encircle the Soviet forces south-west of the city. But that Soviet force - commanded by Mikhail Shumilov - created a situation where Hoth’s panzers tried to advance through minefields while being fired at by Soviet artillery from three directions. Shumilov planned his defense well. Something similar may be happening at Bakhmut; the Russians making some progress, but very slowly and with high casualties.
