The Shapton Rockstar.
I wondered what it was.
So I bought one and put it in my kit.
Now I know, so will tell you.

You're correct. It's just a thicker version of the glass 👍🏼

Loving the hand sharpening content you're doing! It's the same abrasives and binder in the Glass Stones and Rock Star stones. The molding process is slightly different.

I was using the back of the Shapton Glass stones with 3M diamond lapping films with good results. (similar to the KME glass films)... I don’t fuss with them much unless these days. Chasing that super fine edge vs how long they stayed that way was more work than it was worth. Though the higher micron films can make a good edge maintenance hone...

I'm not brave enough or wealthy enough to sharpen on stones but seeing Pete give it a go and having the transition he is going through from assisted sharpeners is starting to make me wonder if I should have a crack at it.

The opinel blade is actually very well designed. That slight curve in the blade is a recurve they incorporated into the design to aid in slicing. Love your content pete.

Basically the Rockstar is just the Shapton Glass in slightly softer. I like both a lot but tend to go for the Rockstar more. They can also give you a nice mid grit Kasumi finish, for the people that are into japanese knives.

an old sharpener's hack with stones that have thinned out a lot is they stick it on wiith epoxy a block of wood or tile or glass so it doesn't break in half or something when it gets super thin

I got to try a couple of these a while back, and the feel of these are absolutely amazing. So I ended up getting 1k, 3k and 8k stones for myself as I usually do coarse/reprofiling on machines anyway, and im kinda suprised how these stones always leaves a toothy edge for some reason. Even on steels that typically glass out on me, even at 8000 grit, they still feel toothy and bitey af. Which I find awesome for pocket knives, but its not a property im very fond of in my kitchen knives, particularly the ones meant for soft protein and such. We keep obsessing over steel properties and geometry, but I wish there was a bit more talk about how the edge itself takes on properties from whatever you ground it against too. Stone type, grit, pressure used, wet vs dry, they all affect what kind of edge you are left with and it allows for alot of flexibility.

I like sharpening Opinels on fixed angle systems - you can close the handle in about 45 degrees and hit all of that edge😊 I had that "nub" thing going too and used it to pierce into tomatoes when that opinel eventually got stropped into "slicing paper, shaving hairs, but gliding on them 'maters" kind of edge in between proper sharpenings

I just got the 2000 with the nice metal case, its a little weird to open but its cool. Love the stone itself, spent the last few hours going through and servicing all my knives. I picked up a new strop and some 4 micron diamond paste with it aswell from zanvak, I cant believe I've been using the ol green brick for so long. I was content with my Suehiro debado 1000 grit for ages but now I want a 4 or 5k stone and some 2 micron paste.

Uuuuhhhhh, careful how you talk about opinels. We are some that take them wayyyy too serious. I love the sliciness of my opinels. Also they are easy knives. Easy to carry, to maintain and to remodel. But then, I also like Victorinox'es. I'm strange like that. 😊

Little handy tip with the Opinel knives - pop the lock ring off with a screwdriver and you can sharpen it all the way to the end of the blade eliminating the little nub 👍🏻

I think the tempered glass was to make sure the stones are totally flat for chisels. You should check out the Nano Hone stones. I feel those cut better than the Shaptons and have much better feedback and feel while sharpening.

Carbide tear out is not real. What is actually happening is people sharpen with too much pressure on there fine stones and they flex the apex and fatigue it. Then it fractures during cutting. Carbides are bound very strongly to the steel. They can be fractured and broken if you use too much pressure but this wont happen near the apex. The apex will flex away like a burr, but further back where there is no flex in the steel they will break near the surface. Todd at science of sharp has documented this with electron microscope imaging.

In my experience, most steels up to 63 hrc can be processed well with the Shapton Pro ceramic grinding stones. Above 63 hrc it becomes tedious and becomes so ineffective as the hardness increases that it no longer makes sense. Hardness and carbide monsters such as Maxamet, 10V or 15V are best sharpened with diamond.

@@achimgeist5185 Thx i know that i tried to sharpen maxmet on naniwa and shapton it was not a pleasant experience i want to buy a spyderco paramilitary 2 in s110v but im wondering if these stones (naniwa chocera 800 and shapton kuromaku 2000) can sharpen this steel

@@jaranjaranski CPM S110V has 9 % vanadium in the alloy and the steel is hardened to 63 HRC on the PM2. I don't have a knife in S110V but in 10V and the grinding with Shapton Pro ceramic stones is a pain. My tip: 200 and 600 grit diamond plate and use the shaaptons for polishing.

How does this compare with the Korumaku? If I remember correctly you said the glass one had better feedback than your Korumaku 5000. I have Korumaku 320 and 1000 and I’m looking to buy a couple higher grits.
