I work for Merlin Entertainments, so I am contractually required to like it... But actually, it looks like a fantastic ride, and I'm in love with the sinister theming. I hope to make my way over to the UK some time to ride it. And no, I wasn't joking about working for Merlin. I'm a ride op over at Legoland California, which definitely has a very different target audience from Alton Towers.

In the UK we have so few rides that can be considered 'on par' with those in the US, but The Smiler is one of the few that we do have. It's such a fun, long and intense ride, you feel like you just keep going and going. It's a brilliant ride. Going back to your new roller coaster safety video, as well as referencing this one, it was a human error and nothing to do with the system that caused the crash, which is really awful. But it's seriously one of the best roller coasters thee UK has to offer, and for a lot of us who can't and will probably never go to any US parks, it's as good as it gets. Thanks for the interesting video :)
@coasterbot6 жыл бұрын
The Smiler is a fantastic ride. But I have to say, many European coasters have much more to offer in terms of a full experience compared to their American equivalents. Just look at Alton Tower's newest addition, Wicker Man, it's probably the best themed wooden roller coaster in the world. It's not the most intense ride, but offers an incredible overall experience. As you said, the Smiler crash was down to human error, not the ride system itself. Hopefully we can all head to the US to experience their parks one day. That would be pretty awesome! Thanks for watching also :)
@rebeccamcgillivray88756 жыл бұрын
You're not wrong! I've been on Wicker Man twice now and it definitely the best wooden roller coaster I've been on with my limited experience, and the theme is brilliant. Hmm. I think often American coasters just seem much better because well, they're over seas in America. I'm happy you think The Smiler is a fantastic ride. Looking forward to watching more of your videos :)

I like how Gerstlauer even offered the same layout of the Smiler for their selection of Infinity coaster layouts on their website. Like, any theme park in the world can have it and make it their own. It's like Intamin's 10-inversion coaster layout found all over the world, which is basically just a clone of Colossus at Thorpe Park.

The thing with nemesis that makes it a truly great coaster is how old it is yet it's still brilliant. So it depends on what you're basing your opinion that the smiler is better on. The whole nemesis experience for me is excellent and how not being able to go beyond a certain height actually helped shape it into a great ride. But to be honest surely just ride both. They're at the same park lol. Just say they're both awesome and leave it at that.

I remember going to Alton Towers on the weekend before the crash. Personally I feel that it is not an intimidating ride once you're on it, but the overall effect and the sense of claustrophobia and confusion in the queue is really disorientating, but at the end of the day it cannot match up to Nemesis, purely because The Smiler isn't that well paced, you are left sitting at the bottom of the lift hills for quite a while, and I think that cramming all of that track into a small space is a disadvantage because it means that you go through element after element, meaning that you can't get any sensation of force, there's just lots of inversions, but none of them are particularly forceful, mostly because of the slow average speed. Overall though the theming is very good.
@coasterbot8 жыл бұрын
+BlueAxeRacer The theme and ride experience are very much linked on The Smiler. As you said, the overall experience is disorientating and is meant to confuse riders. The inversions enhance this, as they make it somewhat difficult to understand where you are throughout the layout. Due to it having 5 block sections, waiting is inevitable and would happen to similar coasters. I think that inversions are an 'acquired taste', you either like them or you don't. I cannot really comment, as I do not remember the ride experience that well, but inversions can be forceful. Overall, I think The Smiler plays very well to it's entire theme and offers a unique and different experience to many other roller coasters.

Must say I don't really care for inversions, they don't make a coaster for me and my top coasters don't have inversions, so I didn't think I'd like The Smiler and after hearing people complain about it being rough, I really didn't have high hopes. However after riding it for the first time last month I absolutely loved it! Definitely my favourite ride at Alton Towers. Great coaster, can't wait to ride it again! PS. Good video as well. I don't get a lot of the roughness complaints on it. I was on back row a few months ago and it was butter smooth (Oh God I've jinxed it now). The ride needs a bit of TLC IMO as it is deteriorating a bit; another layer of paint, more drainage in the queues etc. Hoping they will do something by the start of the season ^^
@coasterbot7 жыл бұрын
It does need a bit of TLC, but I have to agree, it's not rough at all! :)
@concretebuilding2 жыл бұрын
This is, almost not so-quietly, one of my favorite coasters. I grew up around Six Flags Great America, where Raging Bull and Goliath dominate a park skyline. I've also been on the Deja Vu there before it got moved. Thrill rides are kind of my thing when it comes to these places, and I tend to like something that I'd never experienced before. Such was the case with Smiler! The queue was very memorable, and when I got off the ride, I felt like I'd had a few drinks. I was certainly walking to my friends that way. That logo doesn't lie. It can be a bit rough on the head, and I can see why some people might not want to go back on. For me, it's right up there with the big airtime rides.
@sporech93746 жыл бұрын
As much as I love this ride, it needs some serious TLC. It's getting so grimy and the paint's worn off the track. Part of me thinks it's Merlin being neglectful in light of the accident. They've removed the baggage hold and re-routed the fast-track queue, which I'm not happy about :/ The ride needs a good clean, a fresh coat of paint and some proper drainage and it's a shame Merlin don't seem to care :(
@coasterbot6 жыл бұрын
I agree, the ride does need a lot of cleaning up. Unfortunately it looked terrible once it started to operate after it's 9 months of downtime.

It is my favourite roller coaster that I have been on yet and the only part I don't like is the last few inversions (specifically the corkscrews) I find them rough and always smash my head but other than that it is so much fun, especially when you go on with a friend who is unaware of the first heartline roll, it always cracks me up to see their reactions
@kashoot47828 жыл бұрын
+COASTER BOT what is the difference between a corkscrew and a heartline roll.
@coasterbot8 жыл бұрын
A heartline roll places the riders 'heart' in the centre of the rotation through the entire element. This cannot be said for a corkscrew which causes the riders to move in a given direction sideways throughout the inversion. This can be seen by viewing images of a heartline roll and corkscrew next to each other.

This ride is sensational! So many elements that leave you wondering which way is up. My number 2 roller coaster of all time. Also, people say it's rough? Phaa! I found it to be quite smooth to be honest!
@coasterbot8 жыл бұрын
+SCoasters I have to agree. However, the last time I rode it the smoothness varied depending on the various trains and rows.
@CoasterCore2978 жыл бұрын
+COASTER BOT True point. Front row on each train is good, but rougher the further back you go. I wouldn't call it unbearable though

I love the smiler, my favorite roller coaster. But the only thing I don’t like is the last 3rd inversion, it whips you around and smashes your head into the restraint. But you could over come it by keeping your head really still at that point however it takes away the trill of your hands in the air.
@coasterbot5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I know the inversion you're talking about, it isn't very well profiled! Still a great ride though :)
@vertigo48845 жыл бұрын
COASTER BOT I think they where attempting you give you some intense lateral g-forces. Instead it was a painful bump in a smooth ride

Short definition: Mr smiler created a cure to depression
@andrewburton-fullick76527 жыл бұрын
I have ridden The Smiler it is very intense to ride but well worth a go. It is not fare to judge the ride because of an accident caused by human error, it was nothing to do with the design or structure of the ride that caused the accident. There is one other I version tho which people omit that is the jojo roll as you leave the station so if you included that it would have 15 inversions !!!!
@coasterbot7 жыл бұрын
I agree, it's a fantastic ride! The inversion you are talking about after you leave the station is a heartline roll. This is included within the 14 inversions. :)
@SWIFTO_SCYTHE6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Burton-Fullick 2:45 "Pieces of debris seem to fall from the ride" WTF that is before the crash pieces of the coaster fall off?? and numerous technical issues??
@coasterfest6 жыл бұрын
Multiple false positive errors on the block sensors in the run up to the accident lead to complacency, and a desire to override the system and clear faults to get the coaster running again quickly. Also not all engineers were aware another train had been added whilst the ride was in maintenance mode. These factors combined so that when a train stalled in the batwing (again) the engineers overrode the system to manually force clear the block, sending the waiting train hurtling into the stalled train. That’s my understanding of it. So whilst ultimately the problem was human error, this ride is, or was, not without it’s problems which contributed to it (stalling, false positives on block sensors etc)

That being said my total rides on the smiler for this season will be into triple figures by the end of October, off to ride it several more time tomorrow 😂😂😂
@sammy27452 жыл бұрын
The Smiler is so underrated and it’s not rough anymore luckily and it will be open next season. Also the throughput now in 2022 is 1200 riders per hour-the same as Nemesis. (I know this video was made ages ago)
@jasminejohnston6393 Жыл бұрын
Note: The Smiler accident was not the fault of Alton Towers, nor was it Gerstlauer’s fault. The crash was caused by operator error which is why the coaster is still operational today. On the day of the accident, a test train failed to make it all the way through the layout due to bad weather that resulted in wind causing the train to valley (fail to make it up a hill). The operator failed to see this stalled train when the ride’s safety system kicked in and he thought it was some kind of malfunction, so he overrode the system and sent a loaded train into the stalled one. Also, while two of the riders got their legs amputated, no one was killed

I love the Smiler. It's not just the ride but also the theming and the story, something Alton Towers do very very well. Great video too Coasterbot!

I love what they did with the queue.
@coasterbot8 жыл бұрын
The queue to me feels very last minute. However, with it being underneath the ride itself, it does provide incredible views!
@BigDBrian8 жыл бұрын
COASTER BOT The majority of the queue is just normal(except for being below the ride of course), but close to the station there's a lot of fun and interesting rooms :)
@coasterbot8 жыл бұрын
I understand that the room before the station includes projection mapping, however, the majority of the queue is a cattle pen. This makes it quite boring.

The second corkscrew of the cobra roll is a bit rough but at all its a very smooth ride
@zakifletcher89984 жыл бұрын
Love your videos mate, but I’m fairly certain the last 2 inversions are heart line rolls not corkscrews but I could be wrong. Also some very subtle theming changes occurred after the crash. Basically most references to “correction” and “marmaliseation” were removed, e.g. at the half way point it used to say “half way corrected” (as seen in the video), but now it just says half way. Lastly I rode the smiler for the first time last weekend. I rode it five times and personally I thought it was rough, but after you’ve ridden it twice you learn how to brace yourself and avoid the OTS restraints crushing your thighs/crotch, making the ride very enjoyable.
@coasterbot4 жыл бұрын
The last two versions are a mess, somewhere in between a corkscrew and heartline roll! You're right, it changed a lot in 2016

This is my favorite ride in Alton towers and i found it quite smooth apart from the last 3 inversions especially the exit of the cobra roll which i found to be really jerky
@coasterbot7 жыл бұрын
It's my favourite roller coaster that I've been on so far! I agree, the exit out of the cobra roll is a bit janky.
@ThemeParkUK6 жыл бұрын
Is there any reason why they removed the 'corrected' text before the vertical lift after the crash? I don't see why they got rid of it?
@coasterbot6 жыл бұрын
Correct can have bad connotations to those who are badly hurt on the ride.

i went on it before the collision(not the same day but a month or two before) and i loved it. when it closed i was sad and didn't go to Alton Towers in 2016 and 2017 because i thought it was closed but last year my friend said he rode it and i said when. he said the other week and i was so happy that it was open. there, that's my story.

On my second(and last day) of the park, near the end, we went on this for one last time. We waited 2 hours for it, but unfortunately there was a lot of rain. The ride is very rough if it rains, so do watch out, other than that I recommend it vastly, and I can't choose between this and Nemesis for which is the better ride Keep up the good work
@coasterbot8 жыл бұрын
I quite enjoy it in the rain, but it is a painful experience! Personally, I prefer The Smiler to Nemesis, mainly due to the large ride time and interesting layout.
