love this video, a lot of people don’t understand that there is a deeper meaning behind clothing and it’s influence all around the world. I am a sociology major and I am interested in becoming a designer so I am so happy I found your channel. Keep it up! You just got a new follower 🥰

Hi Nicole, Thanks for your video! Your underpinning of the importance of social norms in the self presentation through clothing was lovely. I got to La Sorbonne IV in Paris. I just completed a semi-informal research project on the subject of the micro-social construction of clothing norms. I'm currently working on a large observational research project which investigates the evolution of "champs" on individual's self presentation through clothing (on my own time). Essentially, my hypothesis is based in the Bourdieusian understanding of the environnemental situation of habitus. Habitus, or embodied capital, in this sense is a presentation of belonging influenced by the same cyclistic constructions as anything else attached to the "champ" of the specific institution. A subculture, say, indie music, is a champ. However, the influences are less centralized than, say, within an enterprise (which is what I'm conduction observations on specifically). Given that the environnement and specific social expectations within that environnement influence individuals to construct and or perform their social function, with their clothing as a visible symbol of this construction, then what is the micro-social limited rationality that produces this effect? We might understand this concept if we use the research paradigms of symbolic interactionism. Goffman, in particular, when he described "Impression Management" encapsulated a potential framework to explain the systematic incorporation of "style" or "fashion" for its' symbolic utility to represent the self, and exude a social situation. This was all nice, and all: but I am a huge fan of the historical comparative method formalized by Weber. I believe in all social phenomenon, fashion included, we should be able to track the developement and isolate the relevant variables associated with the phenomenon through a historical investigation of the value attachements. For this reason, I found the book or research conducted by Professor Richard Thompson Ford (Dress Codes) explained the historical evolution of central tendencies which have lead to the valorization and devalorization of certain tendencies. Including encompassing a fascinating notation on the split of stylistic and symbolic attributions of clothing which which strengthened gendered socialization! Anyway, I hope some of this sounds interesting. If you have any leads for me to follow, it would be lovely to hear! I hope you have a lovely day, Salut!

Mashallah Beautiful beautiful video editing! And obviously, what you said was so informative and I loved it. I studied sociology in 2020 and 2021 for my igcse, and this year I'm writing a book. There's a character who feels like he can't control a lot of his life, but one of the things he can control is his choice of clothing, which comforts him a lot. I was wondering how I could explore this further, and I thought of searching up "sociology of fashion"!! This video was sooo amazing

Hello! Thank you so much for this video. I am currently Sociology student in the Philippines. I still don't have a topic for my thesis. When I watched your video, I think I will focus in the sociology of fashion. I would like to ask what is the best research method and design to conduct the research about sociology of fashion?

That’s so exciting! It’s a great topic to explore. Honestly you can use almost any method - it’s all about what’s best for your specific research question and what is feasible for you. If it’s helpful I’m happy to do a video with what I’ve done in the past ♥️
