My 1986 BMW E28 has been sitting for ages without me knowing if the engine is any good. In today's episode we are going to find out if the engine is going to stay or not.

Hey man, I had a weird issue with my idle on my e34. Check to make sure your throttle position sensor is correctly adjusted. I changed gaskets, fixed all the vacuum leaks and it would not idle right. The TPS is on the bottom of the throttle body and has two Phillips head screws. It has two little contacts in it. Take the throttle body off, loosen those screws and turn the tps as clockwise as you can and you’ll hear a little “tick”. That’s the sound of the two contacts meeting. Essentially zeroing itself out. When it’s at point, lock it down. It’s a dumb design but if that thing is misadjusted, the car doesn’t know where the throttle plate is and idles horribly.

@@memphis5220 I was just about to write the same,i think engine bypasses icv when throttle is anywere but resting position, you can hear if it clicks in resting position ( no throttle) with car turned off, i had the same problem on my e28 518i l-jet ( i think your 520i has same injection),basicly somebody just cranked throttle cable adjuster to give more idle speed because throttle body was dirty so to ecu it wasnt idling at all,it was part throttle I wouldnt adjust tps if it wasnt messed with before, clean throttle body and adjust cable first,it think tps location is marked from factory with yellow paint

Having had an E34 and an E39 you can't really beat the straight 6 in M50 and M52 guises but the M20 is still a decent engine and easy to work on. Wouldn't worry about the cylinder rust if you are planning to run it soon and to me it sounds really strong. I have a VW Passat 3C2 now and have performed much DIY work on it over the years. Impressed with your tackle anything attitude and your willingness to learn new skills. Keep it up!

I think the Water in the Oil Cap is normal. My M40 in e36 does also get white slime there when i drive short distances (10km or shorter) to keep it clean you need to drive 100kms with high load.

Man, I had the same early m20b20 in my e28 and it too had a high idle problem. This older version has the weird vacuum system that controls idle but later models have the idle control valve which makes life much easier. I fought with the high idle problem for years, but then swapped a m20b25 in it. Nice power gain compared to b20. Great video and good luck!

Really enjoyed to video, I have a 87' 528i that had a similar issue with the idle, the idle are control valve looks identical to mine and had to turn it quite a few turns for it to make a noticeable difference, in addition I'd say just replace the vacuum hoses because the ones from factory are not made from the best rubber. Also, you could try doing some fine tuning with the distributor timing and air flow meter, as mine had been sitting for 16 yrs and had been adjusted wrong. The combination of all of these thing led to it idling around 750. Finally, there is a guy in Denmark that repairs instrument clusters called Ivo Christov, as there is a battery on the SI board that runs flat if it hasn't been used. just sent the cluster to him and he will fix it for a cheap(ish). Keep up the work on the e28, it makes a great series, Luke

I'm working on the coupe version the E24 and know most of these problems first hand. First of all get the idle screw out and check for the rubber seal. Either it desintegrated or it is just missing. Both cases will make idle setup impossible. Get a workshop rev counter. The cluster one is not accurate enough to setup. Also I highly reccomend to start with the base setup of the engine and adjust from there. The settings are in the workshop manual. That will point out easier if anything is broken or was messed with. Just a tip to your first no start issue. Without the air flow sensor the car won't get gas because the gas pump is enabled by the switch in the air flow sensor.

I'm pretty sure that your problem is the additional air slide valve that unfortunately is no more in production since 2018. You can find the valve following the hose that goes to the idle switch that you have cleaned in the video. Bypassing it will help your idle at warm but not at cold. You might like to use a manual switch so you can close the additional air when the engine is warm. Good luck

Great video, in fact this channel is the one which I see effortlessly all the videos end to end. This was needed to be said. As for the idle, I would connect a diagnostic software to read all the parameters. Surely that for Bosh L Jetronic there is somerhing available. Also cleaning the inhectors might be a good thing to do in order to solve this issue (injectors could be sticking a bit, leading to an increased amount of fuel delivery ) and it could reduce fuel consumption. Keep up the good work cheers Memphys

I have a 1984 6 series. I highly suggest the M30 engine, it's bullet proof, easy to work on, and is smooth. The injector's sound is normal. The idle is handled by the ECM to my knowledge on all BMW's in the 80's with the motronic system. On my car in my case, the only thing a throttle body plate adjustment does is make sure it's not rubbing against the throttle body. If it's too open, it will raise the idle, but it's not meant to be a idle adjustment. Your best bet with the idle issue, check all your temperature sensors on the engine and any hoses for vaccum leaks. (oil dip stick, oil cap, hoses that may be hidden under the intake) There should be a sensor for the ECM that tells the car if it is at operating temperature. It's very common for the wire to be broken causing a high idle. You should also investigate your AFM or MAF. I think the 86's still had the AFM. With a lot of used 80's BMW's (mine included), the last owners opened up the AFM and messed with the gear in order to "fix" idle and power issues. This 'fix' only hides the real issue and can cause more engine issues down the road. Your O2 sensor (if it has one) may be bad and can cause high idle. Hunting down idle issues on those cars is not fun, but don't discount anything just because it looks good! I learned that the hard way and wasted a lot of time.

You have done some important things already on it. (Brakes, welding, tires, suspension, fuel system and exhaust). It shouldn't be that much more work for inspection. Inspected it, drive it and enjoy! That way you can make the best decisions for modifying it in the future!

I think this car just needs a good going over and service and then more regular use. I must say I really love this car of yours. When I was in high school my father bought one of these new. Also 520i Manual in Dolphin Grey. To this day after 30 years thís is the car I most regret not being in the family anymore. Interesting, my father's car was a 1987 model with Shadowline trim, but it had twin exhausts right to the back. It sounded só beautiful. Built by BMW in South Africa in Rosslyn factory. Did late European versions also come with twin exhausts?

that rust is a result of ethanol addon in gas. car is 34 years old. back then there was pure gas (E0) or with just a bit of ethanol (E5) while now it's E10 mostly. and that will eventually destroy engine.
