Been following this site for a few years, and it certainly has helped me improve my game. Thank you for your comprehensive videos. I have a question about aiming you may be able to answer, and it may be useful to other players. I practice at my local club ( not a snooker club). I play ok and often beat competition players ... unless they bring their competition balls when my game seems to fall away. The club balls are smaller ... I think 2 inches as opposed to 2/16th ( or thereabouts). Does the larger diameter impact aiming at all? I also note that the competition balls , and the cue ball obviously, are slightly heavier. Please let me know your thoughts. Cheers!

The cue ball "Space" is always double the distance from the centre of the object ball to the contact point. (Because it's essentially mirrored on the Gohst ball)

Alternative Aiming Method for cuts >= 45°... With your cue centered on the cue ball, use the edge of your cue to aim at the point of contact on the object ball.

The actual aiming point is double the distance of the distance from centre Object Ball to contact point. This assumes zero frictional effects (throw) however. Playing firm or with a touch of outside english can cancel out the throw pretty much. Beware the slow roll or soft stun shot, it will increase the throw, resulting in a thick hit. Allow for this by aiming thinner on such shots when they must be played.

Hey man..a quick question. If it was a straight shot, so your dominant eye(in your case, left eye) is right on the line of aim passing through the centre of the cue ball. What if it is the thinnest of the cuts, then the line of aim does not pass through the centre of the cue ball, rather an edge of the cue ball. So the question is, would your dominant eye still be behind the centre of the cue ball or would it be on the actual line of aim which is passing through an edge of the cue ball. If I am behind the centre of the cue ball, I have to assume the cue ball is stuck to my tip and accordingly I aim, although my eye is off the line of aim. Not the quickest of the questions :D Thanks sir!

Ghost ball or variations of do work but I feel for most people actually doing all this mental trickery is harder than learning to predict what 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 ball hit trajectories are and estimating what fractional hit you need as a result. Just my 2 cents. I wish I could keep the mental ghost ball on the correct place when I aim but I simply can't. Often when standing over the shot I'll imagine the ghost ball to give me an indication of what the fractional hit might be.

No aiming system will ever make you a great player. You might improve a bit, but that's it. In snooker, just like in every sport, you're either born with talent or not. And talent in snooker means you can spot the potting angle. I've never needed a stupid aiming system in my life, I've always been able to judge where I need to hit the object ball in order to make it. So for people like me, training requirements revolve around technique, in order to improve the ability to actually hit the object ball in the desired location: stroke practice, cue action, stayung down on the shot, compensating for side, etc. But if you can't see the potting angle, then you will have a hard time becoming a truly great player.

I think something that can help a lot is understanding how half ball quarter ball shots actually touch the object ball. If you think about a 2D silhouette of the object ball and cue ball touching, the contact point is always exactly half way between the intersection in the silhouette. Does this make sense?

What this means is a half ball shot contacts 1/4 of the way into the object ball. A 3/4 shot contacts at 3/8 and a 1/4 ball shot contacts 1/8

Solid technique isn't necessarily vital to pot basic balls but it really gets important if you want to place the cue ball where you want for your next shot. I think that's the most important thing that separates really good players from just good players. Both might be equally good at potting balls but really good players are able to hit the cue ball exactly where they want and that usually gives the desired position as well.

Love watching your videos I have a problem when I’m down and over my cue. I see 2 sticks. (It’s just like when you hold your middle finger in front of your face and bring it towards your eyes, you will start to see 2 fingers). I’ve been having a hard time trying to figure out my vision line and I sometimes miss easy small angle. While Seeing 2 sticks, I think I tend to steer my cue which makes me miss easy shots. Anyone else have a problem like me?

Are you saying shots under a half ball....you aim on the contact point OR the point the centre of the white goes? So on a half ball pot, you are looking at the half ball point, or the edge? Or are you saying just line it up correctly, and always concentrate on the centre of white line?

hi a question please? I have been playing with my right foot online for years and the butt of the cue is has always been offline (its to the left of line of aim) i am right handed. i have tried all square and boxing stance, and also changed my right foot position to all angles but nothing has fixed the alignment issue. ofcourse i bring my body to the cue but the cue always goes offline because if it does not then the shot will look offline. so it has always been the body position problem. today i tried something new: i tried to move my right foot to the right side of line of aim, i can clearly see that now my right foot is not even touching the line of aim. its just to the right side of line of aim. to clearify it i can see that my right foot is no longer below my grip hand, infact my grip hand looks somewhere above my right knee now, but everything looks perfect and for the first time ever the shot looks online and at the same time the alignment is perfect too. also i can see that, my right leg, it used to be straight with no bent knee but now my right knee is also not bent but i can see that my leg is no longer straight and it has an angle should i stick to what works for me? or my right foot must be under my grip hand? thank you so much

I have been struggling with my potting because I have changed cues.... First cue 8mm light weight English 8 ball cue vs 9.5mm medium weight snooker cue 😭I only changed reason being the brass ferrule is being pressed into the wood of the cue from playing American pool with it

I don't agree, hand/eye co-ordination is a subconscious thing and one mustn't overide it with conscious thought about where the tip of the cue is pointing. The brain knows that the cue ball is the same size as the object ball because your eyes are telling it so, the brain also knows that the line of aim is as wide as the cue ball, so the correct target is the one you should be looking at which is the contact point on the object ball where the two balls will contact each other to make the pot. This is all you need to know about aiming, there is no fine line down the middle of the line of aim that is the size of the tip of the cue, the cue merely propels the cue ball along it's path, and it's path is as wide as itself, if you don't split the path you stay on it, so your first example is the correct one. You don't aim the tip of the cue you aim the cue ball as if it's part of the cue, as if your tip is 2 and 1/16th of an inch wide or whatever size ball cue sport you're playing and your natural hand/eye will take care of it as long as you're looking at the correct target, all you have to do is look and your hand will follow your eyes, look elsewhere like the pocket or the cue ball or a ball you wish to cannon and your hand will go there instead.
