The question of how to approach expanding our knowledge of what wants has such richness in it. We can't just anthropomorphize the living beings of the world, but we have accepted a violation of our humanity by not recognizing our selves in all the beings that surround us. It is for us to take the experiences of trees and hills and rivers into ourselves rather than to impose our experiences onto them. And I for one have to remind myself that believing that that's possible doesn't make it so, and that we have to find and rediscover ways of actually doing the thing!

One place we could maybe begin with is to check out the profound and very wise work of 'the venus project'. They already deeply thought out all these things and offer a very very wise and practical way to completely overhaul our current immature and un-sane system and create a truly sane and healthy civilization on this planet (without coercion or exploitation or benefits to certain people over others). It is not so far fetched as it might sound (to ears indoctrinated by the current capitalist mindset), it is literally in our hands.. I recommend starting with the really really good documentary 'paradise or oblivion' which explains their vision in detail and shows how practical and sane it is.. Their vision also makes everything that Charles talks about into a reality, it will be an obvious and normal way of living that is built into the way the new sane civilization functions..

Our lack of listening breaks my heart over and over...parched indeed. I remember beavers. We have been told by corporations like Nestle that we have no right to water. I turn to the Canadian First Nations. I learned much of this in Ag college in TX where my prof grew peaches. And I am from California where big ag was literally created at Cal Poly. Family of my ex involved...even as I studied with Elders who said we must know a place a long while and my ex moved and moved. Like a fool, I followed. Everything is connected.

Excellent video sir, I wish the public had a better awareness of the truths in this video! Some incredible hydrological restoration projects that are worth checking out. Peter Andrews and his work in Australia, Sepp Holzer and his work all over but particularly Tamera in Portugal and Valdepajares de Tajo in Spain, or Veta la Palma ecological fish farming, Valer Austin and her work with Cuenca los Ojos in Arizona, the Paani Water Cup contest in India founded by Kiran Rao. All they are doing is restoring the hydrology, and with this comes the insurmountable beneficial changes for society, the ecology, and the economy.

Agree, but none if that can lead to truly fundamentsl difference as long as the current immature and un-sane economic system stays in place. A childish short-sighted system that has profit as its highest value and is completly oriented towards maxmizing "returns" for shareholders above all else. This immature anti-life mindset is literally built into the system, this IS the very definition of a corporation - a machine meant to increase returns for its shareholders by any means possible with zero consideration for the effects of doing this. So I don't see how what Charles is talking about can happen as long as this economic system and mindset is in place. it seems like there needs to be a complete and total overhaul of the way we live on earth and of the way we interact with the earth and with each other and especialy an overhaul of our completely childish, un-sane and anti-life economic thinking. I found that 'the venus projext' offers a very very wise and insightful and deeply thought out alternative to our current economic system, an alternative which would make it possible to actually implement what Charles is talking about. Under the current system it simply cannot happen. I recommend their really really good documentary 'paradise or oblivion' (free here on youtube) that explains in detail their very wise and practical vision

A very good summary. But you are leaving out two important effects. Evaporation of the stored water by plants and at the soil surface takes up energy which is set free again by condensation when forming clouds. Thereby much energy is transported away from the surface to higher levels of the atmosphere, from where it is more easily radiated out to space, contributing to cooling. The other effect is the uptake of energy by photosynthesis and storing it in chemical bonds. Usually 50% to 90% of this chemical energy is than transported into the soil and fed to soil live in form of root exudates. This is not only attenuating radiation extremes: Under right management some of this energy will stay there in form of soil carbon for a very long time (and will be helping to improve the water cycle).

Check out the work of *Walter Jehne...* It's the best explanation of soil sponges I've seen on YT! Really in depth! THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT CLIMATE SOLUTION BY FAR! Understanding and optimizing the hydrological cycles can improve so many places in the world, and the local benefits co-create global resilience. Healthy land will be harder and harder to come by in a hotter world so we need to move on this fast. Another point to remember is how much heat water holds, so the soil sponges cool the local atmosphere drastically. These reduce the greenhouse effect from the source, as heat radiation goes up exponentially with heat. This is good news because it means rebuilding landscapes into sponges will have a massive potential impact, should humanity choose to wake up. You're so right that the interconnection mindset is imperative. Thanks Charles!

Ice deserves a mention as well. Water moving from solid to liquid state has a strong cooling effect and I'd take the amount of sea ice being lost (as well as rate of greenland ice melting) as an extreme circumstance purely in terms of retained energy on earth. As much as there's many different effects at work (that probably amplify each other more than we anticipated at least at this point) the pace of change is fantastical in a terrible way. Also estimates as to the amount of additional heat energy retained in the oceans today as a function of climate change go above 95% (not sure how dependable, there's that book 'the end of ice' and the author notes that). There's a real concern here as the stabilizing effect of ice is increasingly gone. Also as you mentioned the effect of healthy soil is important, yes. Less snow is also not great. Do note that nothing is instant about climate change. Sun sends an amount of energy down here constantly, earth has means to reflect that radiation directly (snow/etc; not a lot of stuff is very reflective here though) and to radiate it away slowly if it comes to be absorbed (heat radiation). CO2 is an intense threat because it directly changes the rate at which earth is capable of getting rid of energy that's been absorbed by the material down here, which is a long run issue and simply healing the soil and so on right now may not be nearly enough to prevent a 7 meter sea level rise and the temperature increases that'd cause that, simply due to the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. Yes, soil matters, yes it is part of the escalation we witness now that we have not been able to predict. But we'll need a drastic and fast re-organizing of the way we do things anyway. Now of course I'm also for challenging the authority of numbers over what is the proper course of action, there's a reason I support a basic income. People could drive cars less to plant a tree or have local (or digital) events to enjoy, it sure wouldn't be the end of the world if we cooked more often for ourselves instead of people driving around so much to cook for each other/etc.. Also supporting a basic income because the work we are passionate about and that sustains us isn't just provisioning/implementation, it is also exploratory and cultural (political/artistic/social). Now a language of urgency is useful here to activate people who do care a lot. If climate change activists have no skin in the game then maybe their cause is less plausible than that of nazis who do regularly take a public beating metaphorically. Think about that for a second. This is why talking about war time effort and acting the way (also through direct non-violent action) matters, but it also matters to highlight the possibilities, I mean extinction rebellion don't talk about citizens' assemblies for nothing. Fear immobilizes but challenges activate those of us who are least messed up by our broken culture of overly depending on numbers.

Climate change is truncated & arbitrary, any research into the facts about climate change yield the hypocrisy and falseness of individuals seeking to alarm others of a non issue, C02s is a plant vitamin and self regulates in its relationship to Earths Flora, I know what you are doing even if you do not, you are using the Climate change Dogma as your vehicle to manifest your hate and contempt for someone who wronged you that you are as yet not brave enough to resolve, you seek to remain weak & condemn others to plights of violence rather than improve your relationships and be satiated as whole, I pity you.

Ahhhh, finally someone else who gets it. It's about heat and water. Water traps so much more heat than air, so it almost all goes into the ocean, like a giant radiator. We barely even could account for this until recently (when we discovered we were massively underestimating...) The good part about soil sponges has to do with the fact that infrared radiation is proportional to T^4, so a small reduction in temp can really change the atmospheric temp a lot. This doesn't really help the coral reefs though... still it might buy us some more time to remove carbon without a methane burst. But that's probably already underway...🤔 I wish we could just beam the heat out, but physics....

Excellent. The whole world should listen to this. One thing though is that I wonder why Charles doesn´t mention that deforestation is mainly driven by meat consumption and the resource-intensive animal agriculture industry in the corn and soy prairies of the US mid-west and the deforested basin of the Amazon. The continuous expansion of industrial monoculture practices has been the driving force behind deforestation, soil erosion, ocean dead zones and biodiversity loss at a global scale.

Commit to her nourish her care for her not leave her desolate deserted abandoned. She would have a loving husband to plant seed in her and she will bring forth life. Wicked twisted gmo seed would not be planted but good seed that brings forth after her kind. I can imagine a better us. Our homes would look like Bagend from the shire LOTR. It's a pity you've pitched this as an 'either/or' argument. Climate action requires us to make significant change to our GHG emissions, land management, and waste management. Suggesting that only one of those areas needs to be addressed will be appealing to some people because it is a simplistic answer to a complex problem. Unfortunately only addressing one of these areas won't be enough to ensure a stable climate for our species long term.

I really very very highly recommend checking it out as I think uou complement each other perfectly and can really bring about a completely new and sane era on earth, if you'd colaborate. As you said Charles "to heal the water you have to heal the soil. To heal the soil you have to respect the plants and allow biodeversity to thrive, not do monocrops and not extract anymore.." That's beautiful and very very true, but how can that respect and listsning and healing happen when the very economic system we are living under (the system upon which the whole society and culture is based) is literally built on the exact opposite principles, has profit as its highest value and is completly orinted towards maxmizing "returns" for shareholders above all else. I like his whole speech up until he suggests there should be no fishing zones, enforced by who ? someone should initiate force because I believe the fisher is immoral? Two lives become at risk to satiate my eco anxieties. I know where you are coming from & I agree with you, my contempt is that our solutions are different, fish farms naturally solve issues with overfishing in sustainable food operations like aquaponics, the free market allows resources when not impeded by State activities to accrue to automatically solve problems with wildlife destruction, the cow in the amazon thing is another bumble of state activity. 2 systems exist; -----------Contrived and Spontaneous Organization------- the former is platonic statism, the latter is aristotelian capitalism described by Adam Smith as the invisible Hand of the market, its a best attempt to describe that people acting in their own interest coalesce efficiencies in our system since our brains are so powerful the more of us there are cooperating the more complex the problem(s) we can solve, this only exists in systems that have powerful controls over its use of violence in the system, in that to be efficient violence can only be used to defend yourself and others against those that initiate violence for any reason however meaningful is wrong and will not solve your problem(s) only add to them. ... (How is that not true, if I am wrong I would like to know in how that is for those that see an error in my reasoning/assessment)

There are thousands of no fishing zones in the world, enforced by a variety of stakeholders from government, military, communities, the fishermen themselves. And they work exceptionally well. And in return they help many fishing industries recover, and in some circumstances, are the only reason fishing still exists in certain areas. I come from a fisheries and aquaculture background. I fully support aquaculture, however we have no need to farm predatory fish, such as salmon or tuna. Millennia old flood/drain carp/tilapia farming is some of the most efficient protein production system in the world. Other places are doing an exceptional job of natural fish farming and ecosystem restoration, eg. Veta la palma in Spain.

What Nick said above, and also why must the fact that you have a different perspective lead to "contempt" as you say, for different perspectives? That is actually a huge part of the problem in itself and one that Charles talks about extensively (see his writings and video on this subject on his website, if interested). The psychological dysfunction and immaturity of our species (and the unhealed wounds and traumas that give rise to it) is arguably the biggest crisis we are facing, a crisi in consciousness, a crisis in our ability to listen and work together for the benefit of all of us, an immaturity that leads to ideological loyalties and political affiliations becoming more important than life itself and fostering extreme hostility and hatred and "contempt" to other perspectives. If nothing else, that on itself will inevitablt lead to our destruction of each other and an inability to find common solutions for the benefit of everyone. This is literally the immature ego run amock, and if we don't mature and learn to become aware of what is happening in us - the pain and fears that fuel this hostility and this looking for security in ideas and ideologies (at the expense of immediate reality which is ever changing and never static) - then this psychological immaturity and dysfunction in itself is enough to be our downfall as a species. In addition I would also really really very highly recommend checking out 'the venus project'. They offer a completely different approach than anything that was ever tried by humanity before. I think you'll find it VERY wise and insightful and practical, as well as very comprehensive in its breadth. I recommend starting with the brilliant documentray 'paradise or oblivion' (it's free here on youtube), which gives a good overview of their very insightful prespective, and then checking out their website (or their later brilliant documentart called 'the choice is ours'). I humbly urge you (and anyone else reading this) to please check it out. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
