On the DH rule, they did change it so that the DH applies to both the AL and NL now. And to be clear, teams from the AL play the NL all the time. It is basically the same format as AFC versus NFC in the NFL. They are more difference conferences than leagues as a whole.

The dead time in baseball has grown exponentially and had gotten to a painful point with both batters and pitchers taking forever between pitches in recent years. I had to look up Daz's comment about the UK winning a baseball tournament in 1938. The World Baseball Classic was founded in 2006. The 1938 win was in its precursor, which was held between 1938 and 2011. It was first known as the Amateur World Series and later as the Baseball World Cup. The key to understanding how the UK won 4 out of 5 games over the U.S. is probably the word "amateur." Before television, attending baseball games was a primary form of entertainment in the U.S. There were thousands of professional and "semi-pro" teams. All of these players would have been ineligible for this amateur tournament. Imagine the UK participating in an international soccer/football tournament that prohibited the UK from having any of their best 10,000 players on the team. Most of the team sports popular worldwide were developed in either the U.S. or the UK (my favorite--hockey--is Canadian). At some point in the last 150 years, much of the world has had either an American or a British presence--military, colonial, economic. In some countries, this has largely determined which sports are popular--baseball in Japan, South Korea, and the Caribbean nations; cricket and rugby in the Commonwealth members. By the way, why are UK teams in sports competitions still called Great Britain? For the current World Baseball Classic, Team GB has 6 players born in the UK, 22 in the U.S., 1 in the U.S. Virgin Islands, 1 in Canada, and 7 in The Bahamas. The nationalities of the coaches were not provided. A standard MLB roster has 25 players; I suppose these larger rosters are intended to account for injuries.

I am pretty sure that you can play even if it's a parent or grandparent who lives or lived in a particular country. As for the American team, a lot of players don't participate because it may be in their contracts. Teams hate when their stars risk getting injured so close to the opening of the MLB season. That said there are some stars who are playing. I know a few years back there were "American players" who chose to play for other countries where their family roots were so they had a better chance of getting more playing time. Ohtani is the first in a long time to be so proficient as a pitcher and a hitter, but not the first. There have been pitchers who were such good hitters they got used as pinch hitters. Not as much any more because for years now pitchers haven't batted. Not even in the minor leagues or college. Going way back, Babe Ruth was a 20 game winner as a pitcher and arguably the greatest hitter in baseball ever. The league told Babe once that the fans would support the game more if there were more homeruns. After that there were years when Babe hit more Hrs in a season than most of the other teams hit as a team total. Also back in the day even great stars like Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra etc used to have to work in the off season to make a decent living. Oh and there are some guys playing for England who are from some of the sisland nations that belong to England as well. British subjects.

The earliest written reference to baseball was in a British book of childrens games published in 1744. Jane Austen also mentioned baseball in her 1803 novel, "Northanger Abbey". "British (also Welsh) Baseball" as it was known was basically adult rounders and it was still played in Wales up to the mid-1980's (in the rugby off season to try and keep players out of the pub). British teams started using the "new" US rules in 1890 following the 1889 Spalding World Tour. GB won the first baseball World Cup in 1938... but with grandaded in Canadian players 😂. In football terms, MLB is the Premier League, NPB is the bottom of the PL/top of the Championship, Korean baseball is mid-Champonship and Taiwan is bottom of the Championship/top of League 1.

the “world series” being called the “world series” actually originated as a marketing tactic. Back before the MLB there were multiple competing professional baseball leagues in the US, and one of the marketing ploys two of them used to attract more attendance was creating the “world series” between their two leagues. Most Americans understand in modern times of a far more globalized world than the late 1800’s that it is a very antiquated and silly thing, but tradition is tradition! So the world series it stays.

Baseball promoters and mythologists tried to attribute the sport to Major General Abner Doubleday, who supposedly invented the game in 1839 in Cooperstown NY. Crediting a Civil War general made some sense, because many soldiers would have recalled playing (some early form of) the game during a lull in the action; this probably helped unify the rules to a degree as every town probably had its own local variants (town ball, baseball, one old cat, two old cat, etc). Since he never made this claim in his lifetime, and he was conveniently dead for 14 years before anybody attributed this invention to him, it is highly dubious at best. A more influential figure (in that he had any influence at all) was Henry Chadwick, an English sportswriter and amateur statistician, who is credited with creating a lot of the measurements (like ERA and batting average) still in use today, along with inventing the box score and helping to guide the early development of the rules.

Teams in the same league play each other more often than do teams opposing leagues, especially in their respective divisions. In Major League Baseball, there are two leagues, the American and National Leagues, that will have one representative face off in the World Series at the end of the playoffs. Until recently, the National League did not have the "Destinated Hitter" rule, so the pitcher was one of the 9 players who had to bat. That recently changed and now pitchers do not have to bat in either league. Shohei Ohtani is unique in that he pitches and hits at a very high level so he may be the starting pitcher but will also be in the batting lineup as the Destinated Hitter.

A single game contest is great for a tournament environment, with the best record in group play followed by a bracket elimination round for the championship. In most of the world, league championship in the upper levels of baseball is determined by a 3, 5, or 7 game series. While most of the team on the field plays everyday, pitching varies widely on the same team, and pitching makes up almost half of every team, and most pitchers do not play every day. All pitching arms needs day of rest to stay healthy. To actually reflect the strength of a team, for most of the pitchers to have an effect on the team play, you have to play more than just one game. And that’s called a series. Hence why the World Series is very different than this World Baseball Classic.

If you never played it, I gotta tell you there's not much more satisfying moment than a (wooden, not metal) bat hitting a baseball perfectly. Maybe golf or tennis have something similar, but nowhere near the same degree.

The pitcher doesn’t hit in this tournament. Daz you are correct , the National League in the MLB still has the pitchers hit, ( ** correction they no longer have the pitchers hit as of last year **) Ohtani is a rare breed, he usually DH’s but when he pitches he also occupies the DH slot. If he gets taken out early as a pitcher he can still remain in the game at DH.

Designated hitters replaced pitchers in the batting order, last year. Same in both leagues now.

@@Queue26 Yes. As a national league guy from Philly, I was originally against it. But, it's the only reason Bryce Harper was able to play last year -- couldn't play the field because of his elbow injury -- and he ended up carrying them into the playoffs and into the World Series. So -- selfishly, I've changed my opinion about the DH in the National League.

4:46 100% WRONG. Babe Ruth was the best hitter of all-time and the best left-handed pitcher in the league for a brief period before his prodigious hitting skills prompted his move to full time hitter.

A lot of Americans play for other teams. If all players had to play for whatever country they were born in the American team would be virtually unstoppable.

Everyone on the British national team was born in Britain that's the whole point. Most of them probably spent most of their lives in America which is why they don't have British accents, but they were born there. You can't just be an American and join the British team. All of the Stars on all the other countries teams are Americans now because they have been playing in Major League Baseball for several years and have gained their citizenship, but they still go back to their own country for the tournament

Can be a lot of things linking a player to a region. Some have british parents or a parent , were born there or have a spouse from there etc. It is not really all that strict the rules on who you represent but I do beleive you have some sort of connection to the place.

11:58 I think like half the team is from Bahamas, so yeah Commonwealth and I think it's crazy that they allowed it. It makes sense for Curacao and Arruba to play for the Netherlands since they actually carry EU passports, are citizens of the Netherlands and can go and live there if they wanted to. Can people in the Commonwealth just go live in the UK? Makes little sense if they can't.

It’s because your often allowed in many sports to play for your parents country of Birth. Since the Bahamas was a British colony, anyone who’s parents was born before independence can play for team GB. I’m not sure if all federations accept this circumstance. For me as a Bahamian I can’t play for Team GB because both my parents were born after independence.

Team GB are all grand-daded in Americans, Bahamians and British Virgin Islanders but you have to "fake it 'til you make it"? The plan is to use the WBC to get British kids interested. Italy, Israel and Greece have all fielded teams of Americans in the past too. The Czech Republic show what could be done here. Small country with roughly the same climate. It's not like many British kids (except from the Indian/Pakistani diaspra) watch or play cricket anymore ???

Due to agreements between MLB, NPB, and the KBOL, junior players from the US/Canada, Japan, and Korea play in their domestic feeder leagues and would move to their senior domestic leagues, without interference from the other countries. NPB and MLB are the pinnacle (NPB is slightly weaker, but is still high on talent due to their 9-year control rules, and a Posting system between organizations) I wouldn't call the NPB and the KBO feeder leagues, especially when they're meant to be their actual professional top-tier domestic leagues If MLB is the PL, then NPB is the Bundesliga and the KBO is SPL or the Portuguese league Outside of those four countries, players can generally sign from anywhere to a MLB or NPB farm system should they have the talent, along with playing in a winter league in the Caribbean or Australia

As far as who can play for which national team goes: It's basically whoever is a citizen of a country or it's territories (doesn't have to be born there though) a legal resident of a country or territory 1 of your parents is from that country/territory or if you can prove that you would be granted citizenship to that country if you applied ("in short order"). That's the goofy one. I would be that most of the people on the British team are from the British Virgin Islands or one of their parents is...meanwhile, they grew up in Cuba, the US, DR, etc...and they just aren't good enough to make one of those teams.
